A Special Notice About the Federal Government Shutdown October 1, 2013

CANCELED

Special Notice

Dear OHNY Friends: The federal government shutdown on October 1 affects a limited number of federally-operated sites that are scheduled to be open during OHNY Weekend. On behalf of all of us at OHNY, I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this may cause. A list of affected sites is at right. For OHNY, the most significant impact of the shutdown is that the Weekend Information Hub is scheduled to be located at the Alexander Hamilton US Custom House/Smithsonians National Museum of the American Indian at Bowling Green, a federal museum that will be closed until the federal government reopens. If the shutdown continues into next week, an announcement will be made about a relocated Information Hub. Our hope is that the shutdown will end quickly and that we will be able to add these venues back to the list of participating Weekend sites. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for the most updated information. Announcements will also be available on our blog at www.blog.ohny.org. Despite these unexpected changes, we have another incredible Weekend planned, with hundreds of sites open for tours and talks throughout all five boroughs, from the TWA Terminal at JFK to the Citi Bike Warehouse to the twenty private residences presented as part of Interior Design Magazines Designers Open House series. Other recent changes to the guide can be found on pages a2-a4, with the full listing of advance reservation and open access sites on the pages that follow. I hope you have a fantastic OHNY Weekend and thank you for your ongoing support of openhousenewyork. Best regards,

The following are federally-operated sites that were scheduled to participate in OHNY Weekend and will be closed for the duration of the federal government shutdown. Please follow us on Facebook and Twitter for updated information about their participation. OHNY Weekend October 12-13, 2013

Gregory Wessner Executive Director

For two days each October for the past ten years, openhousenewyork Weekend has given all of us who love New York an extraordinary gift: the chance to follow our curiosity into the buildings we walk past everyday to experience for ourselves the architecture that makes this one of the most remarkable cities in the world.
Through tours and talks at hundreds of sites across the ve boroughs, the Weekend enriches our appreciation of how the physical city shapes our day-to-day lives and reminds us that thoughtful design can contribute to a more vibrant and fullling place to live, work, and grow. As we celebrate the start of OHNY Weekends second decade, I encourage you to take advantage of the Weekend for the incredible opportunity it is. From historic to contemporary, residential to industrial to sacred, OHNY Weekend unlocks the doors to New Yorks most important places. Explore, experience, discover and most importantlyenjoy!

Dear Friends: It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 11th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend. New York has a proud tradition of great urban design. Over the past decade, especially, both the public and private sectors have brought even more innovative projects to the ve boroughs advances we celebrate once again during the always-exciting OHNY. Every October, this citywide festival connects or perhaps reconnects our residents and visitors to more than 350 iconic New York buildings and sites. Expert historians and architects lead guided tours and workshops, giving design buffs the chance to learn a little more about our skyline, streetscape, and parkland. This weekend is also an excellent opportunity to discuss the ways more professionals are making buildings and public spaces an integral part of a healthy and active lifestyle. During the summer, our Administration launched the Center for Active Design, a rst-of-its-kind publicprivate partnership that is promoting adherence to active design guidelines. As participants stroll, paddle, and climb to and from the sites of OHNY, their adventures will lead them to the very best of New York, and provide what promise to be lively experiences in our dynamic and ever-changing city. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I offer my thanks to OHNYs organizers and leaders for their commitment to showcasing the achievements that make our city a capital of design. Best wishes for another wonderful openhousenewyork. Sincerely,

Gregory Wessner

The thirteen-story library building, with its French revival exterior, displayed innovative features for its day - air-conditioned stacks, dumb-waiters to move books between floors in conjunction with a Telautograph system.
