MESSAGE FROM MRS. KENNAUGH

Parents, we need your help keeping our students safe en route to and from school. Several of our students ride bikes and are not demonstrating biking behavior that promotes their well-being. Please go over the enclosed bike safety flyer with your child(ren), as it provides valuable information for you and your child. Thank you! Halloween is the first party of the school year. This years celebration is scheduled for Thursday, October 31. This is a full day of school. Since the first half of the day is regular class time, please dress your child in such a manner so he/she is able to fully participate in classroom activities. The afternoon festivities will begin with the all-school parade that begins at 2:00 p.m. Parents and family members are invited to watch the parade around the track and in the gym since they are both part of the parade route. Please do not block the hallways, as our students parade through the hallways. The parties will be held right after the parade, followed by an all-school recess from 3:05-3:35. Here are some guidelines we would like you to consider when choosing a school-appropriate costume. We believe these will help to promote a fun, positive climate to the afternoons activities.

- ELEMENTARY STUDENT HANDBOOK DRESS AND GROOMING POLICY

The following information addresses the Dress and Grooming Policy at Grand Ledge Public Schools. This information can be found on the Grand Ledge website under parent/student resources, student handbooks, elementary handbook. This specific information can be located on page 11. A dress code promotes a districts academic environment, maintains discipline and prevents disruption of the educational process. Dress or hairstyles that are disruptive, distracting, unsanitary or unsafe is prohibited. 1. Students are prohibited from wearing distracting clothing that is disruptive to the educational setting. Examples of such clothing include, but are not limited to: See-through clothing, visible undergarments, garments that provoke or distract students or school employees, that are obscene, vulgar or demeaning. Examples are: Hooters, Big Johnson, Headgear t-shirts, etc., suggestive symbols, behavior, apparel, or paraphernalia that link groups to gangs or any antisocial behavior.

Clothing, patches, buttons or other accessories displaying profane, vulgar or obscene suggestions are prohibited. 4. Hats, visors and sweatbands are prohibited. Hats are defined as head coverings including, but not limited to, baseball caps, cowboy hats, stocking caps, scarves and hoods. 5. District policy promotes a drug free environment in the school setting. All tops must cover students from the neck to the shoulder and must have cap sleeves. Any clothing that exposes bare skin (as described below) may not be worn except when covered by an appropriate outer garment, such as a sweater, shirt or blouse. Clothing that is distracting, may include, but not be limited to, items such as see-through garments, halters, backless dresses or tops, tube tops, bare midriff tops, short shorts or short skirts, etc. 7. All dress is subject to staff discretion. If a student violates the dress code, the student will be given the opportunity to correct his/her attire or style of hair that day. Corrections will be made by making immediate adjustments at school, wearing a school district garment, or going home to change. Parents will be contacted. A student who continues to violate the dress code will be subject to appropriate disciplinary measures. If appropriate clothing cannot be secured, the student may be required to spend the day in in-school suspension. As always, if you have any questions, or would like to discuss any concerns, please contact me.

COUNSELORS CORNER
~Sandy Husted~
Bullying is more than just pushing, hitting, or fighting. Rumors and gossip are examples of social bullying. A rumor is a story or opinion about someone spread from person to person. The person spreading a rumor often does so without knowing all the facts. Why do people spread rumors? They want attention. It provides excitement and drama. They may be afraid to talk directly about the problem, so they complain to others. Some people like to act like they know more about people or things than others do. Why is spreading rumors considered bullying? Its one-sided and unfair. People are ganging up on the person targeted by the rumor. It feels bad. It hurts people. It is very easy for people to participate in bullying unintentionally by listening to and spreading rumors. Thats why its important for everyone to learn how to control rumors and gossip. People who hear a rumor have a responsibility to stop this kind of bullying. A rumor block is a statement an individual makes to a person who tells a rumor. Students will learn to use a rumor block when they hear a rumor about someone else. Sample rumor blocks that will be suggested are: That sounds like a rumor to me. You dont have proof of that. You dont know if thats true. That sounds like something you should talk about with the person involved. Parents/guardians can help by increasing their childs awareness of examples of put-downs, rumors, and gossip that are on TV. Parents can also help by being good role models and using rumor blocks to stop rumors and gossip during adult interactions.
