My Dear People:
The recession is such a reality that every day
I am approached by people in need. Last
Saturday evening, there was a lady in the
sacristy telling me her financial problems
while I am vesting for Mass. I walked out of
the office yesterday, and someone was
standing there asking me if I am the pastor
and I knew what they wanted. I thank God
for the generosity of our people; so that we
can help those in need. Part of our
motivation should be gratitude for what we
have.
Sister Cecilia from the Catholic Center of
Concern runs out of the Catholic Charities
money in the third week of every month. She
asked me to ask our people to bring canned
goods to church since the local Birmingham
Food Bank has closed and she has an on-
going need for non perishables for those out
of work. President Obama, realizing that
unemployment is now 9.5 percent, says he
expects it to go up to 10 percent.
Kent Graeve addressed the parish council
last Wednesday on the issue of the removal
of the food baskets from the vestibule of the
Church. So the parish council spent thirty
minutes on this issue. The following points
were made:
1. John Carney said in three years on
the council he has never heard so
many complaints from people as
regards the removal of the food
baskets.
2. Bob Henger and Margie Curry who
take the food to the Catholic Center
of Concern on Mondays claim that
the amount has gone down to less
than 50 % of what it was.
3. In addition to reminding people that

4. Milton Essig approached me last
Sunday after Mass and expressed the
need for some furniture type of
container for the food. This way we
can bring the food when we come to
Church. He promised to pay for
whatever well built, attractive furniture
we design for this purpose. Someone
suggested we build a wall cabinet to
conserve space.
After much discussion, three votings took
place. Both were unanimous.
1. Until we renovate the vestibule,
which is in the planning stage, we
must return the food baskets.
2. We should build attractive
containers for food in the new
vestibule.
3. We should be reminded to bring
food on the first Sunday of the
month. Those of us who
forget have the opportunity to bring
the food any Sunday. (There are
presently four bags of cans in
the trunk of my car which I forgot to
put into the food baskets for four
days.)
Catholic Charities sends money every month
to the eight Catholic Centers of Concern
throughout the diocese. This pays for the
sisters and others who manage, organize
and distribute food and supplies to the needy,
as well as money to buy some food, supplies,
medicine, and pay utility bills.
Writing a check is important and sometimes
easier than pulling the right things off the
shelves when we are shopping for food for
ourselves. It strikes me that when I go to buy
food for myself, I am supposed to love others
as much as myself. It seems for me it is
more trouble, but more personal to think of

Healing Grief Retreat to be held
The Benedictine Sisters Retreat Center in
Cullman, AL announces the 14th annual Healing
Grief Retreat to be held August 7-9, 2009. The
retreat provides a spiritual framework for helping
to heal the grief of those who have experienced
the death of a loved one. The experience can
also be beneficial for those who minister to the
