Executive Director Life Skills Center


(Washington, DC)

The Life Skills Center, founded in 1974, enables adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities to live as independently and safely as possible. It operates a day program in Washington, DC, where participants learn basic skills such as writing their own names, crossing the street safely, calling 911, personal hygiene, social skills, and pre-vocational and basic academic skills. The Center is the only program in the city serving Latino adults with intellectual disabilities. The Center seeks a part-time Executive Director (could grow to full-time) with vision, energy and a commitment to working with adults with mental and physical disabilities. The incumbent would oversee the daily operations of the Center, monitor and manage contracts with government agencies, and supervise half a dozen dedicated professionals. Principal Responsibilities Ensure activities of the Center adhere to its mission. Manage basic aspects of the operation, including oversight of programming for clients and day-to-day activities. Work with Board to develop and ensure compliance with annual budget. Ensure the Center is in compliance with federal, state, and city laws. Ensure that the Center has an up-to-date policy manual and other documentation in place to remain in compliance with DC Department of Disability Services monitoring and performance measures and that staff are fully and regularly trained. Ensure compliance with government contracts that provide the bulk of the Centers funding. Serve as the organizations spokesperson, especially in outreach activities. A high priority of the Center is to enroll additional program participants. Incumbent will direct and oversee such outreach efforts. Supervise a staff of dedicated, experienced professionals. Work with the Board of Directors.

Desired Skills and Experience Candidates should have a bachelors degree and a minimum of five years experience in a senior leadership position, preferably working with people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Preference will be given to candidates with the following knowledge, skills and experience: General understanding of community-based non-profit organizations and their issues. Supervising staff. Ability to communicate positively and effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals, including program participants, staff, public officials, volunteers, donors, and Board members.

Experience with government contracts and cooperative agreements and an ability to understand and interpret contracts and government regulations. Experience with monitoring and performance measures. A demonstrated commitment to working with persons of varying abilities and educational levels.
