An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a test instrument for performing measurements on optical fibers. The instrument combines the principles of time domain reflectometry with the unique reflection properties of an optical waveguide to provide a method for measuring a number of characteristics in a fiber. Time Domain Reflectometry A signal transmitted through a conductive medium travels through the medium at a known velocity. For example, when a sound wave travels through air or water, it moves at a relatively constant speed, varying somewhat based on the density of the medium. Sonar uses this principle to determine the distance to an object, by measuring how long it takes a sound wave to be transmitted through water from a ship to the object and bounce back again. In a similar fashion, a radar system transmits an electromagnetic pulse, and detects reflected pulses from distant objects. Measuring the time delay between the transmitted pulse and the received reflection allows the precise distance between the radar and the object to be calculated. Electrical impulses travel down a wire or cable at a constant speed (approximately 90% of the speed of light), determined by the conductive characteristics of the material. When the transmitted signal reaches the end of the wire, part of the signal is reflected back toward the source. If the precise velocity of the transmitted signal in the wire is known, then the distance to the end of the wire may be calculated from the time lapse. This process of launching a signal into one end of a conductor, detecting the reflection, and using the time difference between the transmitted signal and the reflection to determine distance, is called time domain reflectometry (TDR).
The line that uniformly slopes from left to right represents the backscatter reflection of the fiber. Remember, the amount of backscatter light is directly proportional to the power level of light in the fiber. At the start (left) of the signature, which represents the end of the fiber connected to the instrument, the power level of the light and the backscatter reflection is relatively high. As the pulse of light travels down the fiber's length, a small portion of the light is reflected at each point in the fiber, leaving less light to continue down the fiber. Since the power level of light steadily decreases as it travels down the fiber, the level of the backscatter reflection decreases as well. The amount of decrease, measured as a function of the fiber's length, is called attenuation. Since the intensity of the light pulse decreases as it travels down the fiber, the amount of backscatter reflection decreases proportionally. Therefore, by comparing the power level between two points in the OTDR signature, the fiber's attenuation between those two points of the fiber can be observed.
1. Reflection from front panel connector / jumper on OTDR 2. Fusion splice (normal) 3. Reflective (mechanical) splice 4. Fusion splice (gainer) 5. Reflection from end of fiber The TDR cannot directly detect the time that the pulse reaches the end of the wire, but it is obviously one-half of the difference between Time 1 and Time 3 above. So, the length of the wire above can be calculated: Distance = velocity x (Time 3 - Time 1) /2 Fiber Signature The backscatter pattern of a specific segment (or span) of optical fiber is unique. No other piece of fiber has quite the same reflection characteristics. The visual plot of a fiber's backscatter reflection pattern is called a signature. Below is a simplified illustration of an OTDR signature of a fiber. The length of the fiber being tested and the location of features is determined by plotting the signature as a function of time from the initial pulse launch. The OTDR converts the time lapse into distance, based on the refractive index of the fiber. The OTDR display is calibrated to indicate signal strength in dB in the vertical axis, and distance in miles or kilometers in the horizontal scale. Therefore, the exact distance from the end of the fiber to a specific feature, or the distance between features, can be easily determined. Similarly, the optical attenuation (power loss) at each feature and that of the overall fiber under test can also be easily observed in the OTDR signature.

Dead Zone Observe the illustration of an OTDR signature again. The pulse that appears in the signature to indicate a reflective (mechanical) splice has a finite width. Naturally, the gap in the mechanical splice is not as large as the width of the pulse that appears on the signature. The size of the pulse, however, indicates the dead zone of the instrument, and this is an important concept because it dictates the OTDRs ability to detect features that are close together. The OTDR transmits a pulse of light down the fiber. The transmitted light pulse has a defined pulse width; that is, the distance within the fiber that is occupied by the pulse at any one time.
1. The continuity of the fiber span or network (breaks or microbends can be seen) 2. The overall length of the fiber span or network 3. The length of individual fiber segments making up an interconnected network 4. The overall (end-to-end) loss of the fiber network, or each fiber segment 5. The location of each splice or connection point 6. The loss of each splice or connection point 7. The reflectance of splices or connections 8. The characteristic attenuation of each segment of fiber in the network In addition, the signature of a fiber or network can be compared to a previously acquired signature, to determine whether anything has changed. With these points considered, several common applications for OTDRs are apparent. Verifying spooled fiber cable Many communications companies and installation contractors use OTDRs to test spooled cable before it is laid. After a cable is strung or buried is the wrong time to find out it is defective or damaged.
When the transmitted light pulse encounters a reflective feature (like a mechanical splice), the reflection is much more powerful than normal backscatter reflections. Because the OTDRs detector is extremely sensitive, the high-power reflection saturates (overwhelms) the detector for a short period of time. Until the detector returns to normal, it can't detect another feature in the fiber. The total time of the pulse width plus the detector's recovery time is called the dead zone. It is indicated on the OTDR display by the width of a pulse reflection on the signature. If there are any features within this distance, the OTDR cannot detect them. The normal dead zone for an OTDR is 2-1/2 times the selected pulse width.
Evaluating new cable installations After fiber has been laid or strung, OTDR signatures should be acquired. These signatures will allow evaluation of the installed cable for splice and connector loss and reflectance, microbends, breaks, sectional attenuation, and other quality assurance acceptance standards. The position in the fiber and characteristics of all splices and connections can be determined. These reference signatures are often stored for future use with cable installation records for each route. Verifying fiber performance Periodic test of selected fibers in a cable can demonstrate that the cable is still coupling optical signals effectively. Outside stress influences can sometimes be detected before catastrophic failure occurs. For example, if the attenuation of a section of fiber increases, or an apparent fusion splice appears where there is none, it indicates a potential problem area. Evaluating suspect routes If a transmission fault is reported in an area, an OTDR can confirm that the fiber is either working correctly, or is faulty. Fault location An OTDR signature of a suspect fiber can accurately locate the position of a fault, if a reference signature is available for comparison.
OTDR Applications By connecting an OTDR to one end of an optical fiber or interconnected fiber route, a signature can be acquired and displayed that provides the user with several significant pieces of information.

Description The Drake TSM TV/SAT Meter is a portable test instrument designed for measuring and optimizing satellite TV reception systems, for measuring cable television signal levels, and for measuring signal levels associated with off-air TV installations in all band (FM broadcast, VHF, and UHF). Its wide measurement level range (up to 3 Volts in VHF and UHF) make it easy to verify the operation of the antenna or cable system, without the need for external attenuators. The TSM1000s compact, portable size and self-contained rechargeable battery make it ideal for field installers. The unit also comes with an external battery charger that connects to a rear panel recharging connector on the instrument. The battery charging unit operates from the nominal 115 VAC, 60 Hz AC supply mains. To facilitate alignment of the satellite receiving dish antenna at installation or for maintenance, the TSM1000 employs an automatic frequency sweep plus an audible tone indication of the relative measured signal level. The frequency sweep and audible tone operate in the satellite band of tuning frequencies. Switchable LNB voltage of 14 or 18 Volts DC is also supplied via the coaxial satellite input. The LNB current can also be measured with the TSM1000. On FM, VHF TV, and UHF TV bands, audio is also demodulated and applied to the internal speaker for easy signal identification. The TSM1000 also utilizes a peak detection system. The peak detector responds to the video synchronizing pulses instead of the time varying video information giving installers a more stable meter indication when measuring video signals. The TSM1000 is the necessary tool for the professional installer or service technician.

Description The RFM150 SignalScout is a high-performance RF signal level meter designed to meet the demanding requirements of cable TV applications. Besides providing basic level measurement capabilities, SignalScout can measure and display other important information needed to properly install and maintain a cable TV system. Measurements include in-service Carrier-to-Noise and Hum, the frequency spectrum of a channel, and FM deviation. A built-in FM detector and speaker are also included for easier identification of the selected channel. Level Measurement Modes SignalScout provides a variety of level display modes including single channel, pilots, 5-channel, analog meter, and all-channel mode. All of these modes are available by selecting the LEVEL hard key. The signal-channel mode displays the visual-carrier level (in dBmV or dBuV) as well as the aural carrier difference (in dBc), the site name (if entered by user), the channel number, and the frequency. The carrier frequency can be quickly selected using the user-definable function keys, direct numeric entry, or the knob. With numeric entry, the user can enter either the number or the frequency of the desired channel. Pilots mode (2-channel) and 5-channel mode can be used to measure the level of two or five channels simultaneously. The default channel or frequency can be defined by the user using the Utilities menu or by a simple press and hold of the function keys. Analog meter mode provides the same basic measurement function as single channel mode, but using a simulated analog meter display. Users may use this mode for peaking and/or nulling adjustments. Worldwide Compatibility SignalScout is designed to be compatible with NTSC, PAL, and SECAM cable TV systems. Built-in channel tables are included for many countries and others are user programmable. Channel tables can also be created and downloaded to the RFM150 using the CSS150 SignalScout software. In addition, SignalScout is able to measure the levels of dual carrier sound systems in use throughout the world including NICAM, analog dual carrier, and Korean dual carrier. Digitally Modulated Carriers SignalScout is designed to meet the requirements of emerging cable TV technologies by providing the capability to measure the average level of digitally modulated carriers.
Automatic Test Sequences Automatic test sequences can be downloaded into the RFM150 through the built-in RS232C port using the CSS150 SignalScout software. The CSS150 SignalScout software is Microsoft Windows-based software to control and display measurement results of a Tektronix RFM150 cable television RF measurement meter. These sequences minimize keystrokes during testing sessions by reducing detailed measurement requirements to a couple of keystrokes. In addition, test sequences guarantee consistency of measurement practices between individuals and over time. The results of these measurement sequences can be uploaded to a PC using the CSS150 software for long term archiving of maintenance records. Internal Timer Function An internal timer function can be used to program SignalScout to turn itself on, perform a sequence of measurements, and store the results. The instrument turns itself off after the measurements are completed, thus reducing power consumption and extending battery life. This capability is essential for satisfying the requirements of FCC 24 hour testing and other time-specific testing. Results Storage Non-volatile memory allows storage of individual measurement results as well as measurement sequences user defined. Data such as time, date, temperature, and site identification are included with each record. The standard 32 K-bytes of nonvolatile memory is sufficient to satisfy the storage needs of most applications. Additional non-volatile memory is sufficient to satisfy the storage needs of most applications. Additional nonvolatile memory can be ordered using Option 01. Features Minimum detectable signal - 86 dBmV from a 75 Ohm source Rechargeable Gel-Cel battery - 50 hours on one charge Push-button battery indicator High impact aluminum case with removable shoulder snap Description The Model TR-1 Tracer is a compact, calibrated RF leakage detection receiver specifically designed to detect RF leakage from CATV systems. The receivers high sensitivity and calibrated logged meter scale provide a simple means for locating signal leakages and for determining whether radiation complies with FCC regulations. The calibrated dual-scale meter indicates relative field strength and maximum allowable distance. This maximum distance scale is calibrated to the FCC specifications for leakage from a coaxial cable in the 54-216 MHz region. The 0 dB point on the relative field strength scale indicates the maximum allowable leakage when measured at a distance of 10 feet from the cable. The Tracer can operate with any one of the standard TV video carriers. This eliminates the need for a special transmitter. The receiver emits a recognizable audio tone when leakage is detected, allowing for unmistakable broadband system checks. The Tracers local oscillator (L.O.) is crystal-controlled, enabling the receiver to have a narrow bandwidth and maximum sensitivity. A fine-tuning adjustment is provided to compensate for any long-term drifts of the L.O. frequency. Standard equipment: dipole antenna with magnetized base, cigarette lighter plug, wall mount charger, battery, carrying strap, near-field probe, 10' cable lead, headset, truck mounting bracket, tuning tool, 8 dB and 20 dB attenuator pads.

Why Should Cable TV Engineers & Field Service Personnel Use True RMS Test Instruments?
Description One of todays greatest concerns and problems in servicing commercial, industrial and even residential power systems, is the presence of "non-linear, distorted wave" loads. A non linear load is one which due to the design of the equipment, draws power in short pulses rather than smoothly and continuously. An excellent example is variable speed compressors, blowers and fans used in todays high end residential air conditioning systems. While improving efficiency, these devices alter the shape of the current and voltage waves causing "distortion". And thats where the problems start. The problem is that most typical snap-around ammeters and volt meters, whether analog or digital, are NOT designed, nor are they capable of reading non-linear circuits / loads correctly. Most voltage test instruments in use today are "average sensing". This means that they calculate and display the average value of the volts or amperage wave being measured. On a distorted wave load the average value is usually substantially lower than the RMS value. Simply stated, this means that the average sensing meter produces low readings, and depending on the severity of distortion, readings may be as much as 30% to 50% off.
This is especially true in a building where there may be substantial non-linear loads, such as computers, telecommunications gear, or medical equipment. Typically this equipment is more sensitive to minor variations in power quality such as "brown-outs". Frequently these installations are protected by power-conditioning transformers or un-interuptable power supplies (UPS) systems, which clean-up regulate and stabilize "dirty power" (not supplied as a nice clean sine wave) which may be coming from the local utility or created elsewhere in the building. Since you can not see, and may not suspect, wave distortion or harmonics causing problems for your test instruments, the only way to be sure you are getting accurate measurements is to use true RMS reading instruments such as A.W. Sperry models DSA 450, dsa 2009 or DM 8700. True instruments calculate the Root Mean Squared value and only instruments specified to be true RMS will read correctly regardless of the current or voltage wave shape over a wide frequency range.

Description The Tempo Research Coax Tracer System(CTS) is designed to take the guesswork out of coax identification and location. The CTS includes a Transmitter that outputs an 84 kHz tone and a 1 kHz tone and a CTS Probe that identifies and picks up the 84 kHz tone inductively and the 1 kHz tone capacitively. The CTS out performs the current method of locating cables and is easy to use. Two tones (84 kHz and 1 kHz) are sent simultaneously through the push on F connector an the CTS Transmitter. The dualpurpose probe identifies and picks up each tone either capacitively (at the end of the cable), or inductively (through the sheath anywhere along the cable path). By tracing the tone inductively, the targeted coax cable can be identified out of a bundle, or at the junction box Without disconnecting and probing each cable end. This saves time, unnecessary service interruption and potential RF leakage caused by capacitive toning methods of standard tone generator/probe tracing devices.
Benefits Identifies cables through the sheath and at the cable end Reduces trouble-shooting time, saving money on every dispatch Prevents interruption of other customers services Reduces the potential for RF leakage due to less drops being disconnected for ID purposes Reduces customer complaints and repeat visits Two-in-one probe works with standard tone generators

Benefits Unique: The only Tone Generator which provides 3 distinct tones at the same time from one unit Saves time: TR-3 will tone 3 separate cables / wires with one initial set-up Saves Money: The TR-3 is half the cost of buying three average, single tone generators All other features of an average, Single Tone Generator: Continuity (pair one), Polarity, Talk Battery, Line Status Testing and Toning up to 50,000 feet. Ordering Information Description The TR-3 MultiToner is three tone generators built into one. Tempos TR-3 is the only tone generator that provides three distinct tones (800 Hz, 1 kHz and 1.2 kHz) all at the same time. The TR-3 allows the user to positively identify three separate cable pairs or wires simultaneously, using any inductive tracer / probe with one initial set-up. By providing three tones all at once from one generator, the TR-3 reduces the amount of time and number of tone generators required at the job site. Tone number one is transmitted through the alligator clips and all three tones are transmitted on the RJ11 modular plug. For tracing in either direction or regardless of facility, a 2 pair adapter is used to direct tones two and three to alligator clips. The TR-3 provides all the other functions of an average, single tone generator including talk battery, continuity, line status testing and toning up to 50,000 feet. The TR-3 is designed for applications including telephone, data, security / alarm, audio / visual, HVAC and electrical systems. Features Operates on dead or active lines Direct or Inductive coupling Silent RF locating minimizes interference to other circuits Description The Model 501 Tracker II is a portable, buried cable locating system. The transmitter can be connected directly to one end of the cable, to the inductive coupler, or to the inductive antenna. The transmitter generates an RF signal that is modulated with a tone of approximately 1000 Hz. This permits effective performance even at distances greater than 4000 feet to depths of more than 7 feet. The inductive coupler clamps around the cable, sending a tone which enables the user to locate active or dead cables. The inductive antenna is mounted inside the carrying case and can be placed over the cable, wire or metallic pipe to be located. The inductive antenna transmits a signal through the ground onto the item to be located. The receiver is a hand-held unit used to trace the path of the cable. Mounted on a 33 handle, it has an ON/OFF sensitivity control knob, a meter to read the signal strength, and a speaker to hear the tone. A jack permits the use of the optional head set.

Features Silent RF locating minimizes interference to other circuits Battery powered - goes anywhere Compact and lightweight Locates up to 1000 ft. Description For tracking hidden cables, wires and pipes underground or in walls. System consists of the 500LP transmitter and 508MT receiver packaged in a compact carrying case. The receiver has a tracking antenna attached to the end of a short length of cable. By connecting the leads of the transmitter to the cable, wire, or pipe being traced, it is possible to follow the path of the subject cable, wire or pipe by gently swinging the antenna of the receiver over the suspected path until there is a null. All that is necessary then is to follow the nulls and track the path. It is also possible to use the Mini-Tracker to determine the depth of the subject cable, wire or pipe.

Features Pinpoint secondary faults and cable breaks Locates exact cable path in crowded cable surroundings Measures cable depth with the push of a button Built-in voltmeter, ohmmeter and output level indicators Description The Dynatel 4420L cable and fault locator is a portable instrument used to pinpoint earth return faults and locate the depth and path of buried power conductors, CATV and telephone cables as well as metallic pipes and tracer wire. With its detachable receiver antenna, the unit estimates cable or metallic pipe depth quickly and simply, giving a digital readout in feet and inches. The 4420L locates buried cable using one of four user-selected modes: peak, null, differential or special peak. The receiver also incorporates a special "expander" function which enhances the amplitude difference between two conductors carrying the same tone, making the unit extremely accurate, even in congested areas. The unit can precisely locate faults on both short and long cable sections. It sends a trace tone simultaneously with a fault-locate tone, allowing the operator to use the cable-locate function when locating faults in long cable sections and it can discriminate between light and heavy faults. The 4420L consists of three basic components: a transmitter with built-in voltmeter, ohmmeter and output level indicators, a hand-held receiver with detachable receiver antenna, and an earth contact frame that is color-coded to correspond with indications from the receiver directing the operator towards the fault. Both the receiver and transmitter have a self-test routine that is executed every time the unit is turned on. A continuous battery status indicator informs the operator of reserve battery charge during normal operation. The 4420L cable and fault locator includes the receiver, transmitter, earth contact frame and the following accessories: large clip direct-connect transmitter cable, small clip direct-connect transmitter cable, ground rod, ground extension cable, short receiver/antenna cable, earth frame cable, alkaline batteries (six "D" cell/five "C" cell), 3" Dyna-Coupler, coupler extension cable, instruction manual and probe antenna.

Baseband Measurements and FCC Compliance Testing BY MARK J. EVERETT - VIDEOTEK, INC.
The revised technical requirements presented to the Cable TV industry by the FCC last year has caused quite a stir, and raised many questions which are still unanswered. A small portion of these rule revisions apply to baseband or demodulated signal testing. I am presenting this article from my point of view, baseband. Both my background and comfort lie in the baseband rather than the modulated portion of the world. There are clearly three measurements which must be made in the baseband mode, and one more which might be included. The purpose of this article is to clarify the measurements and their use in the real world. I do not wish to imply that any suggestion offered here is one which must be followed - this area is cloudy enough, and I have no desire to make it worse. Further, I will offer a means of performing these tests which may be easily accomplished by almost anyone. First, the tests required by the FCC. Chrominance to Luminance Delay Inequality refers to a phenomenon which is most apparent in a 10th generation VHS duplicated tape you got from other faults, the facial color, for example, of the person on screen is displaced to the left (or right) of the face. This displacement of the color information from the black and white detail information is Chromiance to Luminance Delay Inequality. This distortion of the video signal happens primarily in situations where the baseband signal is separated, by frequency band pass, for processing. Common processors are most video tape recorders (VCRs), time base correctors (TBCs), processing amplifiers with separate controls for color gain and contrast (or luminance) gain and television receivers. The FCC test allows for an error or time displacement of up to 170 nanoseconds, they dont care in which direction the separation takes place, and it doesnt really matter. The ideal state is where the chroma and luminance are in time with each other, that is a delay inequality of 0 nanoseconds. A relative delay, either leading or following, of 170 nanoseconds is an on screen displacement of slightly less than 0.1 inch on a 19 television screen. Most broadcasters feel that 170 nanoseconds of error is about as wide as barn door, but the on screen visual reality is not that bad. The most common test signal used to measure this delay inequality is a 12-T modulated pulse which is a portion of two standard combination test signals. The FCC and the NTC-7 Composite test signals(Figures 1 and 2) both have a 100% bar, a 2T pulse, a 12-T modulated pulse and a 5 step modulated stair step as members of single line test signal. One or the other of these two test signals is usually present in the vertical interval in every broadcast and satellite signal, so it is a readily available test signal. The pulse in question is the broader triangle shaped pulse and the filler inside is chroma information. When all is well, the bottom is flat, but with errors the bottom can take on a curved or S shape. The S shape distortion is the delay inequality in which we are interested. The second mandated measurement is Differential Phase. This is a slightly less prevalent phenonmenon, but it is a phase (hue) change or shift in color caused by a variance in luminance. Imagine watching a football game, on television, from Dallas. It is a sunny day, and you know that all of the astro turf on the field is one shade of green, but when the camera coverage goes from the sunny area to the shaded area, the grass color goes from green to yellow-green. That hue shift, due simply to luminance level, is differential phase. The FCC allows a maximum of 10 degrees shift to maintain a legal signal. Here, again, most broadcasters are moaning about the wide amount of error allowed. The truth is that, although many of us can see a phase difference of 10 degrees, when anyone sets the hue control on a television set for proper flesh tones, he can be off by 10 degrees, and yet feel like the hue is correct. Green to yellow-green, by the way, is about 30 degrees of phase shift. There are many more test signals available and in use to test differential phase, and the FCC or NTC-7
SOUTHEAST: Norcross, GA SOUTHWEST: Irving, TX 800-433-3765 800-643-2288
Composite test signal (again Figures 1 and 2) are two available test signals, either of which may be used. Here, the 5 step modulated stair step portion is used. The variations are 10 modulated steps, or a ramp with a modulated signal imposed on the ramp. In all cases, the modulation is of one phase, and it is usually a yellow-green color. The test is to measure the phase at all luminance levels and compare the absolute differences, the amount, in degrees, is differential phase. The third mandated baseband test is Differential Gain. Yes it sounds almost the same, and yes, some have already figured out what this one means. In the baseband world, we quite often refer to both Differential Phase and Gain, because they are often interactive occurrences. Back to the Dallas Cowboys, same conditions, but now when the action goes from the sunny area to the shaded area, the hue stays green, but the intensity goes from bright green to almost no green at all. The chroma gain (or color intensity) seems to change based on the relative light level of the scene and this is differential gain. For this test the FCC allows as much as 20% variation in differential gain. Even I think that this is an excessive amount of tolerance, but the truth is that 20% variation in chroma gain is not distinguishable by most viewers. Testing is performed with the exact same test signals used for differential phase. The modulated stair step or ramp is used here also, and the difference in measurements is to measure the total chroma amplitude at all levels and compare the amplitude differences, the maximum difference, in percentage, is differential gain. There is a fourth measurement set, which is the subject of some discussion. This is testing the frequency response of the channel. There are some conflicting ideas, but the FCC document does refer to using either a multiburst generator or vertical interval test signals. I will not join in question of using a sweep, or sin X over X, or RF spectrum analyzers, or the fact that FCC compliant modulators start to roll off at 4.1 MHz and have to be 20 dB down at 4.75 MHz. There are a couple of base band test signals which are there to measure frequency response. Two very common vertical interval test signals available for this testing is the NTC-7 Combination and the FCC Multiburst test signal (Figures 3 and 4). They are slightly different signals, but both contain packets of representative frequencies from 5 MHz to over 4 MHz. Here, the requirement is within 2 dB of the idealized level, over the entire range. The testing is to simply record the source amplitudes then measure the resultant signal after processing and calculate the difference. The test is looking for the maximum variation at the worst frequency in the situation under test. All right now, so how do you do this easy? and accurate? and with little or no technical skill? Get an automatic baseband measurement instrument. There are a couple available on the market, and in all cases they must be set up, by a qualified technician, to describe the location (line number and field number in the vertical interval) of the test signals to be used to perform the measurements on each channel to be tested in your system. The most cost effective test unit is controlled by a PC, which is probably already used by the field technicians, and is simply an automatic measurement instrument. More expensive units have waveform and vectorscope functions built in, so they might be used by the senior technician to build tests and as a trouble shooting field test instrument. Testing requirements of each system is unique but there remain some similarities. Everyone must comply with the same rules, and the auto test instruments available from at least one manufacturer have the FCC cable TV measurements parameters built into the instruments. Auto testing can identify your errors, but we are all still waiting for the device to identify and then fix those errors. Until then, happy testing.

Description The TVM-730 Video Analyzer sets a new standard for combination waveform monitor/vectorscopes. It is the first combination model to have auto-measure capabilities in a half-rack width, 5-1/4 inch high package. Auto-measure provides text readouts for horizontal blanking measurements, frequency response, test signal parameters and many other measurements. An innovative combination of analog and digital signal processing provides the fidelity of analog resolution with the unquestionable accuracy of digital measurements. Operator defined measurement parameters can be stored in memory for instant recall and the output can be downloaded to a personal computer for storage or to generate a hard copy print-out. The TVM-730 provides two operating levels. Level I lets operators display waveforms, vectors, pictures and one SC/H phase. Level II gives engineers a complete range of tools, including digital line selects, quad SC/H phase displays, measurement cursors with on-screen digital readouts, and a revolutionary 3-D display. Tactile membrane hard keys select all primary functions while soft keys select context sensitive onscreen menu items. All functions are clearly labeled for intuitive selection. Four composite inputs and a wide variety of functions provide monitoring flexibility. Nine different inputs/filters can be displayed simultaneously, such as differential phase, differential gain, flat, low pass and chroma filter. Waveforms can be displayed in simultaneous parade modes or overlayed for comparison of timing and amplitude characteristics. Vector displays can be overlayed for simultaneous observation and comparison of the phase and amplitude of up to three signals. Onscreen writing completely describes the display on the CRT. The picture mode displays monochrome pictures individually, or paraded. Remote control (RS-232/RS-422) of memories may be accessed via a personal computer. Features Inputs Four composite loop-through. Any input can be selected as reference. Auto Measure Automatic measurement of hundreds of tests, the TVM-730 does NTSC (FCC, RS-170A, RS250C, NTC-7 and CABLE), and the TVM-730P does CCIR (473, 567, 569 and 624) parameters as well as common basic measurements. Two input/output ports are provided. One may be directly connected to a printer and the second port is available for other connections such as a personal computer.
