2001-2011, over 565,000 IT-related jobs (in all industries) were created in the United States, an increase of 22.2 percent. IT jobs grew more than 95 times faster than employment as a whole, which grew by only 0.2 percent. In 2011, IT workers earned $78,584 a year, 74 percent more than the average worker ($45,230). Even during the Great Recession and its aftermath, when overall jobs were declining, IT jobs grew. May 2007 - May 2011, IT jobs grew by 6.8 percent, contributing $37 billion to an economy that was otherwise stagnant. In 2011, IT products comprised 31 percent of U.S. advanced technology product exports and about 9 percent of all U.S. goods exports.

ICT FACTS
IT was responsible for 75 percent of U.S. productivity growth from 1995 to 2002, and 44 percent from 2000 to 2006.
The Internet alone accounted for 21 percent of the GDP growth from 2006 to 2011 across 13 leading economiesBrazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Russia, Sweden, the UK, and the US. IT workers contribute 3 to 5 times more to productivity than non-IT workers. In the 2011 Inc. 5000 rankings of the 5,000 fastest growing companies in the US, almost 1/4 (1,140) were in the IT industry, with a 3-year average growth rate of 302% and revenues totaling nearly $54 billion. In 2012 there were 466K US jobs related to mobile apps, up from 0 in 07. The mobile app economy generated almost $20 billion in revenue in 2011. In 2012, over 88 percent of the 500 most popular mobile apps were developed by small businesses, most with fewer than 10 employees.

Over half of all firms report difficulty recruiting employees with appropriate ICT skills and training. These findings are surprising given the
high rates of unemployment in the state. Two in three ICT-related firms and nearly half of non-ICT firms report some or great difficulty recruiting employees with appropriate ICT skills and training. Larger firms report more difficulty than smaller firms in recruiting qualified employees
The workforce and potential employee pool do not have the skills needed by employers.
According to CompTIAs State of the IT Skills Gap from February of 2012 : Information Techology is increasingly strategically important to organizations in most industries.
Nearly 6 in 10 (56%) companies report being only moderately close or not even close to where they want to be with IT skills.
Respondents place the highest levels of importance on skills associated with what could be described as the IT foundation such as networks, servers, storage, security, database management, and IT support. Most (80%) organizations indicate their IT skills gap affects at least one business area such as staff productivity (41%), customer service / customer engagement (32%), and security (31%). Nearly half of respondents cite the dynamic nature of the tech space as a primary cause of skills gaps. Another top cause is the lack of resources for professional development.
The IT skills gap is increasing and is bigger than in other functional areas.

Californias ICT Workforce labor market would work better if there was a detailed, agreed-upon and structured framework for employer ICT Workforce competency demand, which educators and trainers used to prepare ICT Workforce in consistent ways, and employers used to communicate ICT Workforce and ICT job needs.
Our organization would appreciate and be much more willing to entertain hiring students with ICT related credentials from California Community Colleges for ICT Workforce roles if there was a consistent, system-wide, validated foundation of knowledge and skills for ICT education and workforce development programs that addressed both technical and non-technical competency expectations.
If there was a detailed, agreed-upon and structured framework for ICT Workforce competencies, our organization would be willing to reference them in future job announcements for ICT Workers, so applicants could better understand our requirements and match them to their own education and experience, and so we could better map applicant education and experience to our own needs.
Non-technical (soft, workplace or employability) skills are at least as important as technical skills in what we look for in our ICT Workforce.
Information and communication technologies (ICT) competencies are increasingly important for most of our employees, regardless of role. If there was an agreed-upon standard for "digital literacy", or ICT competencies expected of all workers, regardless of workplace role, my organization would value a credential based on that standard as a way of validating ICT skills for non-ICT workers.
In the 21st century, an ability to work with information and communication technologies is becoming as essential to education, life and workplace success as reading, writing and arithmetic. ICT Digital Literacy should be considered a basic skill by educational systems, something taught to and assessed for all students.

Employers from across all regions, industry sectors and business sizes in California have resoundingly approved foundational IT workforce technical competencies of the federal DOL IT Competency Model through a rigorous survey method and research process.
