About The Composer


Kelly Tang's works have been performed by internationallyrenowned ensembles including the Russian National Orchestra, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ensemble Contemporain of Montreal. Regionally, his music has been performed by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, the Macau Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Thai Navy Orchestra and the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra Tangs music has been presented at prestigious venues worldwide, including The Sydney Opera House, Suntory Hall (Tokyo), the Hanoi Opera House, the Auditorium di Milano (Italy), Tokyo Opera City and Carnegie Hall (New York). In Singapore, his works have been commissioned and performed by the Tang Quartet, the Singapore Lyric Opera, the Singapore Youth Choir, The Philharmonic Choir and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. His music for wind band has been performed by the Queensland Conservatorium Wind Orchestra (Australia), the Desford Colliery Brass Band (UK), the Philharmonic Winds & the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band with musicians from "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. In 2006, Tang scored the music for the Australian feature film "Feet Unbound", which has won acclaim at major film festivals worldwide. He composed the symphonic score to the opera "Intrigues in the Qing Imperial Court presented by the Chinese Theatre Circle in 2007. In the field of Jazz, his compositions have been performed by Jazz legends Ernie Watts, Randy Brecker and Jeremy Monteiro. Grounded upon a wide array of contemporary composing techniques, Tang's musical style is enriched by a confluence of diverse sources incorporating Schenkerian Theory, Parametric Analysis, Serial Procedures, Baroque Counterpoint and 20th Century Harmony, Tangs music also draws inspiration from his experience as Pop album producer, composer of stage musicals, Chinese folk song arranger and Jazz pianist, as well as his training in South Indian drumming under legendary Mrdangam virtuoso Trichy Sankaran. Tang was awarded his PhD degree by Michigan State University in 1995. In 2008, he was presented the Artistic Excellence Award by the Composers' and Authors' Society of Singapore (COMPASS). He currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at the National Institute of Education, Singapore.
