4. Workload and grade calculation:

10% Participation. Half of the participation grade is equivalent to attendance. At the beginning of every lecture and presentation, all students will sign their initials on the attendance sheet. The attendance sheet will be removed after the first 20 minutes of class. You may miss 3 lectures. 20% Homework. There will be a small homework assignment due almost every week. All homework must be word-processed; handwritten assignments will not be accepted or graded. Homework assignments will usually come from your textbook. 20% presentation. All students are required to present the explanation based on the concepts of linguistics distributed the previous week. You can find the information from the three textbooks recommended and internet. 25% Midterm. Tests are in-class, short answer/true or false/multiple choice. There will be a detailed review session before the test so youll know exactly what is coming. The dates for both the midterm and the final are fixed at the beginning of the semester. Please schedule your other obligations around these dates, because THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUP TESTS. Make up exams will not be given except in the case of extraordinary circumstances. 25% Final. See Midterm. Your letter grade will be assigned based on the following scale: A : 86 100 A- : 8.0 8.5 B+ : 7.5 7.9 B : 7.1 7.4 B- : 6.6 7.0 C+ : 6.1 6.5 C : 5.6 6.0 D : 0.0 - 55 Attendance policy. I know that you are serious students but that you are also adults who budget time between coursework, jobs, personal/family commitments, and unforeseen circumstances. Because of this, you are not required to attend every class, and the workload and the attendance policy are designed accordingly. However, as in any course, you will do best if you come to class every time and on time. What to do if you miss class.
