Suggests a sound philosophical foundation in the nature of professional activity for resolving the tension between altruism and self-interest in favour of virtue and character by putting forward six characteristics of the relationship between professionals and those who seek their help. Richard A Gray accompanies the article with a bibliography annotating 12 key sources on the topic of virtue ethics. Massachusetts, 25-28 October 1993. Describes a collection evaluation project undertaken by Alaska University at Fairbanks, Geophysical Institute Library, to evaluate their Seismology and Vulcanology Collection and determine how well the library was meeting the needs of the users. The study focused on 7 problem questions concerning collection size, comparison with an authoritative bibliography, local availability of not held bibliography titles, acquisitions priorities, user behaviour, periodical readership, overall user rating. The bibliography was compiled from 4 published sources and 23 completed survey questionnaires were obtained. The collection was determined to be generally strong and well used but with specific minor inadequacies that could be remedied at modest cost. The project demonstrated the efficacy of conventional assessment tools adapted to a particular collection and user community. Original abstract-amended.
