What are Earths Resources?

1. Natural resources are any material or Substance from Earth that is used by people 2. Natural resources are what you need to survive ; they include Air, soil, fresh water, petroleum, rocks, minerals, forests, food, wildlife, coal and wind, etc. 3. energy comes from the sun

What types of resources exist on Earth?

1. Some resources like coal, oil (petroleum), and natural gas take millions of years to form. Other nonrenew examples include rocks, minerals 2. Resources are grouped into two groups based on how fast they can be replaced renewable and nonrenewable. Renew means to begin again. A renewable resource is a natural resource that can be replaced as quickly as people use it. Nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be reused 3. Some renewable resources, such as the sun, will never be used up no matter how fast people use them. Some renew resources are air, soil, fresh water,, forests, wildlife,

How can we protect natural resources?

1. Recycling natural resources 2. Conserve energy by turning off the water when you brush your teeth, recycling newspapers, Turn off lights when you arent in the room 3. Use resources ONLY when you have to! Conserve energy, consider alternate modes of transportation

What are fossil fuels?

1. A nonrenewable energy source made from the remains of organisms they take millions of years to form 2. The different kinds of fossil fuels are petroleum, coal, and natural gas 3. They release lots of energy that we use in our every day lives to produce energy and electricity. When they burn, they create pollution they are harmful to the environment

Natural Gas
1. Is a mixture of hydrocarbons in the form of gases hydrocarbon contains carbon, oxygen and hydrogen 2. Made from sea life that dies and gets buried in sediments. Then, metamorphism (heat and pressure within Earths crust) occurs and it is chemically changed to create natural gas. Natural gas is constantly forming 3. Natural gas includes methane, propane, and butane

Petroleum
1. A mixture of hydrocarbons that are in the form of liquids. Forms the same way natural gas does! 2. Separated into many different products including: gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, and fuel. Petroleum provides more than 40% of the worlds energy 3. It is so valuable that is known as black gold. It is also called crude oil

Coal
1. A solid fossil fuel that is made partly from decayed plant materials. Coal is an organic sedimentary rock. The phases are Peat, lignite, bituminous, anthracite 2. It is a problem because people remove the layers of soil above the coal 3. Coal releases heat when it is burned. The pollution from it usually causes acid rain, which can affect wildlife and plants.

What is alternative energy?

1. A source of energy that is not a fossil fuel, such as solar power (using solar panels). Some can be converted easily into usable energy, but some may not. 2. Alternative energy is renewable 3. Many scientists are trying to find alternative energy sources

Types of Alternative Energy

1. Types of alternative energy include: nuclear (fission and fusion), wind power, chemical energy (using fuel cells), solar energy, hydroelectric energy, geothermal (heat from the mantle), biomass, gasoline, 2. Hydroelectric energy comes from the movement of water 3. Fusion is a combination of two atoms, which form a heavier atom. They form using solar energy. Fission happens when an atom splits into two or more lighter atoms 4. Chemical energy is released when hydrogen and oxygen react to form water 5. Biomass is organic matter than can be burned and used for energy
