Supervisor’s Instructions for

Computer Testers
Kentucky & Multistate Essay Exams

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

Greeting (8:45 AM)
Good morning. The following people have not registered. If you are present, please
come forward.

Read names of unregistered applicants. If anyone hasn’t

registered, check their ID and have them sign in.

Security Cards, Instruction Sheets and Collection of

Security Cards
You were handed an envelope as you entered the room. Check the seat number on
your table to be sure it matches the number on your envelope. If the numbers do
not match, find your correct seat now.

Inside the envelope is a card. Remove the card from the envelope and be sure the
number on the card matches the number on the envelope and the seat number on
your table.

Completely fill out the card, and then seal it in the envelope. These cards will
ensure your anonymity during the exam and until your bar results are released.

The number on the envelope, the card and the table is your Applicant Number. You
will use it throughout the examination to identify your exam questions and answers.

At your table, you will find two sheets of instructions. On the back of one of the
sheets, you will find a blank space to write your Applicant Number. Write your
Applicant Number in this space, tear it off and keep it for your records.

This ensures that you have a record of your Applicant Number. On the day results
are released, a pass list will be posted on the Office of Bar Admissions’ Web site.
Applicants who have passed will be identified by Applicant Number only. If you lose
your Applicant Number or forget it, it will not be released to you, and you will have
to wait until you receive your results in the mail.

Instruct monitors to collect security cards.

The other sheet of instructions, on red paper, is specific to using your computer for
the essay portion of the exam. If you do not have these instructions, please raise
your hand.

If anyone doesn’t have red sheet, give them one.

When you entered the room, you should have completed the first three steps listed
on these instructions. If you did not take a practice test or test your USB drive,
please raise your hand.

Note locations of anyone raising his/her hand.

If your hand is raised, you will not receive additional time to take a practice test or
test your USB drive; and if you experience a problem with your computer, you must
write the remainder of the exam.

2
Seating Arrangements
If you are taking both days of the examination, you must sit in the same seat
tomorrow.

General Rules
Restrooms, Leaving the Exam Room and Emergency Exits
Restrooms are located outside the testing room, and you may use the restroom as
needed during each three-hour session.

If you leave to use the restroom or take a break, do not leave your test materials at
your table. First, lower the screen on your laptop slightly so that it’s not visible to
others, but do notclose it completely. Then, take your test booklet and ID badge to
a staff member at a table immediately outside the exam room.

To exit and re-enter the exam room, use only the door marked “Use This Door.”
That door is located …

Identify door location.

We ask that you limit your trips in and out of the examination room to keep
disturbances to a minimum.

Drinking water is also located on tables outside the exam room.

Do notdiscuss the exam in the restrooms or any other area during the exam
session. This will be considered cheating.

In the event of an emergency, please note that the exit doors are located …

Identify emergency exit door locations.

Prohibited Items, Plastic Bags and Scratch Paper

A listing of prohibited items is prominently displayed outside the exam room. If you
are caught with any prohibited item, it will be confiscated.

All permissible items, such as wallets, keys, coins, tissues, and other personal items,
are to be placed in the clear plastic Ziploc bag you have been provided. Nothing is
to be left in your pockets.

Place the clear plastic bag containing your personal items on the floor underyour
table. The only personal items that will be allowed on your table are your computer,
a clock with no audible alarm, and a mouse and/or keyboard.

Scratch paper is not permittedfor the either the Kentucky Essay or the Multistate
Essay Exam. However, you may mark in your test booklets, if necessary. No other
papers, other than the instructions we have provided, are permitted on your table.

Getting Help
If you experience any problem with your computer at any time or have a question
related to the use of your computer, hold up the red sheet of instructions, and a
tech person will come to your assistance.

3
By “problem,” I mean error messages or any other unusual or irregular behavior
your computer exhibits, in addition to an outright crash. If such a situation arises,
again, raise the red sheet, and a tech person will assist you. The tech person will
assess the seriousness of the problem. If he can get you going again quickly and
with reasonable certainty that the problem is resolved, you may continue. If not,
you must write the remainder of the exam in an answer booklet.

Exam4 creates incremental back-ups every 10 seconds and full back-ups every two
minutes. Even if you experience a major failure, you should lose no more than the
last two minutes of work, if you alert a tech person as soon as a problem happens.

It is up to the tech person, or people, to determine whether a computer problem or

failure is serious enough to require you to stop using your computer and write the
remainder of your exam. However, Exam4 is very stable and reliable. This is the
third bar exam in Kentucky using it, and we have used it at the University of
Louisville School of Law since Fall 2007, for well over a thousand exams by now.
Any problem you may have is more likely to be the result of hardware trouble with
your computer than a software problem.

If you experience any non-computer problem or have a question about any other
matter, just raise your hand, and a monitor will come to your assistance.

Kentucky Essay Instructions

Multistate Essay Instructions
We are now ready to begin the Multistate Essay Examination.

Instruct monitors to pass out question booklets.

Do not open the question booklets until I instruct you to do so.

Look at the front cover of the question booklet. There is a space in the upper left
corner for Applicant Identification. Write your applicant number in that space.

Turn the question booklet over and read silently the instructions printed on the back
cover. When you have finished, turn the question booklet back over, with the front
cover facing up, and look up at me.

Wait until every applicant is looking up.

Because of a printing error, the questions in the question booklets are numbered
incorrectly. The printers numbered the questions 1 through 6. The questions should
have been numbered 7 through 12, corresponding to the answer space numbers in
the Exam4 software.

To prevent any confusion, please break the seal on your question booklet now, then
go through the booklet and cross out the incorrect question numbers and write in
the correct question numbers. For example, Question 1 should be Question 7;
Question 2 should be Question 8; Question 3 should be Question 9; Question 4
should be Question 10; Question 5 should be Question 11; and Question 6 should be
Question 12.

If you have a defective question booklet, raise your hand now, and a monitor will
replace it with another one.

Instruct the monitors to walk down their rows to check that

this being done correctly.

Wait one minute.

Raise your hand if you have not completed renumbering the questions in the
question booklet.

Again, you will not receive answer booklets unless you experience a computer
problem serious enough to require you to write the remainder of the exam. If that
happens, a monitor will bring you a set of answer booklets in which to write.
