POLLUTION

Pollution is when something is added to the environment that is harmful or poisonous to people, animals and other living things. Smoke in the air from factories is a type of pollution as it is bad for the lungs when breathed in. Sewage in drinking water is another type of pollution, as it can make people unwell because it contains germs and viruses. People living next to a building site where there is too much noise can become sick as they cannot sleep or relax. This is called noise pollution.

INTRODUCTION:
Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution.

FORMS OF POLLUTION:
The major forms of pollution are listed below along with the particular contaminant relevant to each of them: Air pollution:- the release of chemicals and particulates into the atmosphere. Common gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) andnitrogen oxides produced by industry and motor vehicles. Photochemical ozone and smogare created as nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons react to sunlight. Particulate matter, or fine dust is characterized by their micrometer size PM10 to PM2.5. Light pollution:- includes light trespass, over illumination and astronomical interference. Littering:- the criminal throwing of inappropriate man-made.

Noise pollution:- which encompasses roadway noise, aircraft noise, industrial noise as well as highintensity sonar. Soil Contamination:- occurs when chemicals are released by spill or under- ground leakage. Among the most significant soil Page 2

contaminants are hydro-carbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated hydro-carbons. Radioactive contamination:-, resulting from 20th century activities in atomic physics, such as nuclear power generation and nuclear weapons research, manufacture and deployment. (See alpha emitters and actinides in the environment.)

Thermal pollution:-, is a temperature change in natural water bodies caused by human influence, such as use of water as coolant in a power plant.

Visual pollution:-, which can refer to the presence of overhead power lines, motorway billboards, scarred landforms (as from strip mining), open storage of trash, municipal solid waste or space debris. Water pollution:-, by the discharge of wastewater from commercial and industrial waste (intentionally or through spills) into surface waters; discharges of untreated domestic sewage, and chemical contaminants, such as chlorine, from treated sewage; release of waste and contaminants into surface runoff flowing to surface waters (including urban runoff and agricultural runoff, which may contain chemical fertilizers and pesticides); waste disposal and leaching into groundwater; eutrophication and littering.

Help Stop Pollution

The solution to pollution is in everyone's hands
On earth, many people use products every day to help them with their daily tasks. Unfortunately humans also hurt the natural environment with the manufacture and waste of these products. Smoke and fumes let off by factories build up in our atmosphere, and trap more heat in the earth. Carbon dioxide also depletes the ozone layer, which is a protective band around the earth that filters UV rays. The earth heats up due to the greenhouse effect. On earth, improper disposal of waste diseased animals and insects. Litter detracts from the beauty of our environment. However, there are a few ways you can help to stop pollution.

Use Environmentally Safe Products

Believe it or not, leaves and grass can be harmful to marine life when you use your garden hose to wash them into the gutter

your car, its important to follow these good housekeeping practices to keep your home, our local rivers, creeks and ocean pollutant free

Compost Yard Trimmings

Compost green waste or recycle it in your City-issued green recycling bin

Report Illegal Dumping

To report a clogged catch basin, street flooding, illegal dumping, abandoned hazardous waste, please call the 24-hour City of Los Angeles Storm water Hotline.

Pick Up After Your Pets

Animal waste that runs off of lawns and sidewalks sends harmful bacteria into the storm drain system and out into the ocean, creating problems for swimmers and fish. By following these simple pet practices, you will be creating a healthy environment in and Page 4

around your home for your family

Dispose of Trash Properly

Household hazardous materials such as fertilizers, pesticides, paints and used motor oil have the potential to cause serious harm to our environment if they are not stored correctly

Use Water Based Paints

Wash out paint brushes in sinks never outside on your lawn or gutter.

Recycle Everything You Can

Landfill space (where all our trash goes) is rapidly filling up and we can greatly reduce the need for having to find precious, open land for additional capacity. Open land can be better suited for parks or natural habitat for wildlife and much of what we throw away can easily be reycled! FACT: It is estimated that, of the 40 tons of trash that washes onto our beaches every year, over 80% of it couldve been recycled!

Take Your Residential Special Materials to a City of Los Angeles S.A.F.E. Center
Residential Special Materials are typical household products that should not be disposed of by merely throwing in the trash. These items include unused or leftover paint, pesticides, cleaners and other chemicals. There are several permanent locations throughout the City of Los Angeles where residents can take these items where they can be safely disposed of.

Don't Litter
In carrying out this mission, the Storm water Program implements myriad engineering, enforcement and educational projects.
