Mr. Lin Harrison, Chair Dr. Chris Bakke Vice-Chair

Ms. JoAnn Birrell Mr. Denis Collins Mr. Kevan Espy

dEar mEmbErs,
Have you ever stopped to think why IT matters to have a YMCA in our community? As a YMCA member you may use the fitness equipment, take advantage of the free babysitting, or enroll your child in a swim lesson or sport. By simply participating, does it really matter to our community? In 2012, your YMCA spent many hours trying to matter to you, your friends, and neighbors. Did you know each summer your YMCA goes on the road to teach children, who would not learn otherwise, how to swim? Drowning is the second leading cause of death among our children and your YMCA is giving children this life-saving skill. Are you sure your child could save themselves in the water? Bring your child to our monthly swim assessments to be sure. Did you know your YMCA believes all people, especially children deserve an equal chance to reach their full potential. With The Little School, your YMCA is ensuring all children in our community are prepared to start school. We are in areas of town where there are not pre-schools or early learning opportunities ensuring all children have an equal start. Through Youth Fit for Life, we are making huge strides in combating childhood obesity during after-school programs and with Coach Approach we are doing the same with adults. We want to matter. I challenge you to think about how your YMCA could matter more for you and our community. Your contributions to the YMCA in time and money are busy with things that matter. Please ask how you can become more involved. Your Friend, Becky Shipley Executive Director, McCleskey & Northeast Cobb Family YMCAs

Thank you to our members and community for giving to Partners with Youth, our annual support campaign. hEalthY liviNg $251,627 given annually through YMCA membership scholarships. Memberships allow lower income families to reconnect, develop healthier lifestyles and combat our obesity epidemic. $14,025 allowed children at the Y and in the community to overcome their fear of water and develop confidence in learning to swim who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. Youth dEvElopmENt $30,114 given to children for summer camp who would otherwise be in an empty home caring for themselves during the summer. $22,105 given annually to help children realize their potential in a noncompetitive youth sports environment. $14,400 provided support to The Little School. Research shows less than 30% of Hispanic children are prepared for Kindergarten. The Little School is making strides to better prepare Cobbs youngest children so they may be successful in school. soCial rEspoNsibilitY $2,000 brought East Cobb families together for a day of volunteering for Brumby Elementarys Beautification Day. $2,600 provided vital health and financial information to East Cobbs aging populations through bi-weekly lunch and learns.

tweens & teens

Somewhere between becoming an adult and being a kid, a teen is discovering who they are and who they want to be. Often misunderstood, teens want us to know that they are growing up. At the Y, we know that teenagers will rise to meet expectations set for them, so we set our expectations high. Mentors, staff and other role models value our teens' individuality and guide them toward becoming responsible and engaged adults. For more info contact Kristen Gauvreau at kristeng@ymcaatlanta.org.
