Directions: Create a single-frame political cartoon that presents your perspective on the issue in a memorable way. A 2-3 page essay discussing audience-based appeals, the core of the argument, visual design, and use of images must also be submitted. The last sentence of the introduction must be a thesis statement that is specific and clearly states the writers claim. The introduction must also provide engage the readers interest, show why it is controversial or problematic, and provide necessary background information. The essays conclusion must summarize the argument and end with something memorable. The audience-based appeals must identify a target audience and include assumptions about the audience, goals for the audience, and how the course of action is clear and direct. The core of the argument must determine a clear claim and thoroughly explain reasons for the argument. The creator/writer must also indicate whether the claim and reasons are explicit or implicit. The visual design and use of images will explain how the design and layout persuades and grabs the audiences attention. Font sizes, styles, layout, and color are analyzed in relation to the creation of strong, lasting, memorable impressions. The essay must also discuss how the image provides evidence for the claim, illustrates the main idea, evokes emotions, or enhances credibility and authority. The single-frame political cartoon must be original. Software application is strongly encouraged although hand-drawn or cut-outs will be accepted. Software application suggestions include Storybird, Stripcreator, Wordle, or one of your choice. Grammar and mechanics will also be graded for accuracy. Particular attention will be given to topics already covered in class. More than ten grammatical/mechanical errors will result in no grade. Evidence of each stage of the writing process must be submitted: prewrite, planning, drafting; revising, and publishing. The required length is 2-3 pages in addition to the political cartoon.
