2. Creating and displaying your Poll Component
Activity:
1. Log on as administrator (http://localhost/joomla15/administrator)
2. Select Extensions>Template Manager>2x click rhuk_milkyway
3. Select Preview
4. Note the various positions of top, user3, user4,right, etc.
Case Study
Having noted the various positions to guide you in placing your web content, let’s do the
following:
Case 1: Changing the location/position of the Main Menu on the rhuk_milkyway template
Hint:
1. Go to Extensions>module manager>site>main menu (2x click main menu to edit)
2. In the “Details” section, note the Position. What will you select to position the Main
Menu module to the “top” section?
3. Having changed the position what do you think is the next step?
Tip: In your browser, select a new tab and type http://localhost/joomla15; refresh this every
time you want to see changes in your site
Case 2: Experiment changing the location/position of the Main Menu to ‘left’ then to ‘right’
Case3: Now we want to create a Poll component and display it on the front page of our site.
Activity:
1. Log on as administrator or click on Components if you are already logged in as
administrator
2. Select Polls>new>Title: (type) Favorite Colour, Alias: Colour; Option 1: red; Option 2:
blue; Option 3: yellow
3. Save (the new poll)
4. Now we are ready to display our poll, select Extensions>Module Manager>New>Title:
(type) Colour>Position>Choose Right>Module Parameters>(select) Colour
5. Save
6. Preview changes (refresh your browser) and observe the position of the Polls
Case 4: Create another new Poll and title it “Favourite City”; Option 1: Manila; Option 2:
Davao; Option 3: Baguio City; display the poll and position it to the ‘right.’ Test your polls if
they work.
Objectives:
Activity I:
1. Log on to http://joomlabatjo.nl
2. Register for an account, follow instructions provided by the site
3. Check your email to activate the site. Close the site.
4. Log on again to http://joomlabatjo.nl this time use your username and password
5. Go to the Downloads section, click on the FREE link
6. Click on mod_shoutboxfree 1.2.0 zip to download the zip file
7. Log on as administrator to htpp://localhost/joomla15
8. Install the mod_shoutboxfree 1.2.0.zip file you downloaded earlier
9. To activate the shoutbox module, click on Extensions>Module Manager>New>Enable
Shoutbox
10. Double click shoutbox to go to the Edit Module Page
11. In the Edit Module page, type the Title: Shout Box>select Right as the position of the
shoutbox>select No for Allow Guest Users to Post (at this point you are setting
shoutbox not to accept posts/comments from unregistered members of your site.
12. Click on the Save Button
Activity 3. Creating a Log In Form for visitors of your website using the Log In Module This
Module displays a username and password login form. It also displays a link to retrieve a forgotten password. If user registration is enabled (in the Global Configuration settings), another
link will be shown to enable self-registration for users.
1. Log on as administrator
2. Go to Extensions>Module Manager>New>select Log In>Type a Title “User Log
In”>position: right>save
3. Preview changes in your website

What do you think are the benefits to the website owner if there is an option allowing for
user registration? Of what importance is a user registration?
1. Get at least 3 of your classmates to register to your site. By default they will be set
as Registered users.
2. To find out if they are really registered, log on as administrator>Site>User
Manager>the page should display the names of the members of the site
1. Log on as administrator
2. Select Extensions>Module Manager>Shoutbox
3. In the Shoutbox module edit page, figure out how you can restrict access to the
Shoutbox for registered users only. (where only registered users can access the
Shoutbox)
4. Save and close.
5. Get one of your classmates (who previously registered) to log in with username and
password. Your classmate should be able to access the Shoutbox.

2. Select Extensions>Module Manager>Colour
3. In the Colour (Poll) edit page, figure out how you can restrict access to the Colour poll
to registered members/users only.
4. Save and close.
5. Preview the changes (Colour poll is no longer displayed)
6. Get one of your classmates to log in with user name and password. (Colour poll
should now be displayed).
