Dear Parent/Guardian, Your student received a ________ on their last vocabulary assessment.

At [insert school here], we strive for excellence and encourage each student to reach his or her academic potential. Because your students most recent grade did not meet our expectation for excellence, they will be required to participate in a structured study program. Your student must spend a minimum of twenty minutes studying their vocabulary words during each school night (Monday through Thursday). In order to ensure that each student is completing his or her required study minutes, we ask that you provide your signature on this form to verify that you have witnessed your student studying for the allotted amount of time. We have provided some study tips and ideas on the back of this paper for your reference. We have also attached a list of the current vocabulary words that should be memorized. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact [teacher name] via phone or email. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Study Tips and Strategies: Cover and Check: Fold a piece of notebook paper vertically down the middle (hotdog style). Write the vocabulary words on one side of the page, and their corresponding definitions on the other side. Fold the definitions side in half, so that the edge of the paper meets the middle. Write the definition of each word on this side. Once each word is defined, unfold the paper and check your work. Make note of which words you defined incorrectly, and write those words and definitions out completely five times each. Repeat until all words are memorized. Flashcards: Write each word on the fronts of notecards, and write their corresponding definitions on the backs of the notecards. Use these cards to quiz yourself by displaying the word and recalling the definition, or displaying the definition and recalling the word. Place all words that you knew immediately in one pile, and all words that you struggled with and/or didnt know in another pile. After going through all of the cards once, go through your didnt know pile once more. Then, shuffle all of the cards together and study the entire set again. Repeat until words are memorized. Notecards are always available to students in the classroom! Verbal Quiz: Enlist the help of a parent, grandparent, older friend or cousin to help you study for vocabulary. Provide your partner with a list of words and their definitions. Your partner says a word aloud and you provide them with the definition. Repeat this process until you have defined all of the words on the list. Variations: Your partner provides the definition and you give them the word. Use a kitchen timer or timer app on your phone to complete a speed round. See how fast you can work through the entire vocabulary list. When youre done, do it again and try to beat your best time. Post-It Trick: Write each of your vocabulary words on a Post-It note. Stick the Post-It notes around your house in prominent areas (bathroom mirror, fridge, TV, etc.) As you encounter each word throughout the day, stop and define the word out loud.
