1. During Transportation/Storage:
During transportation or when in storage, new P.W. Boards must not be indiscriminately
removed from their protective conductive bags.
Do not store or place P.W. Boards in a location exposed to direct sunlight and high tem-
perature.
When it becomes absolutely necessary to remove a Board from its conductive bag or
case, always place it on its conductive mat in an area as free as possible from static elec-
tricity.
Do not touch the pins of the lCs with your bare hands.
Protect the PWBs from any external force so that they are not bent or damaged.
2. During lnspection/Replacement:
Avoid checking the lC directly with a multimeter; use connectors on the Board.
Never create a closed circuit across lC pins with a metal tool.
Before unplugging connectors from the P.W. Boards, make sure that the power cord has
been unplugged from the outlet.
When removing a Board from its conductive bag or conductive case, do not touch the
pins of the lCs or the printed pattern. Place it in position by holding only the edges of the
Board.
When touching the PWB, wear a wrist strap and connect its cord to a securely grounded
place whenever possible. lf you cannot wear a wrist strap, touch a metal part to dis-
charge static electricity before touching the PWB.
Note that replacement of a PWB may call for readjustments or resetting of particular
items.
The magnet roller generates a strong magnetic field. Do not bring it near a watch, floppy
disk, magnetic card, or CRT tube.

6. DESCRIPTION OF MODES
6-1. Mixed OriginaI Mode
The copier detects the size of each page of the document as it is taken up and fed in and,
according to the size detected, feeds the copy paper of the corresponding size selected
from among the available paper sources.
The mode is mainly used when making copies from a document set consisting of pages
of different sizes.
6-2. 1-Sided Mode
When a multi-page document is being copied, the copier detects the size of only the first
page of the document and copies the subsequent pages based on that size detection.
This saves the copier the time required for detecting the sizes of the subsequent pages
of the document, making for a faster and more efficient paper feed timing.
%
If a document of pages of varying sizes is used in this mode, image trouble could result
including missing copy image. (The system does not, however, force a misfeed condition.)
6-3. 2-Sided Mode
The ADF automatically turns over 2-sided originals for a speedy copying operation (cop-
ies are made in the order of the first and second pages).
6-4. SingIe Feed Mode
This mode may be used when the user wants to make copies from an original for which
feeding is not guaranteed (pasted-up sheet, translucent paper, heat-sensitive paper,
etc.).
When a single original is inserted into the Single Feed Tray, the ADF automatically takes
it up and feeds it in to let the copier run a single copy cycle.
Each original is transported at a low speed.

7-2. Document Pick-Up Mechanism
The document pick-up mechanism consists of the Document Stoppers and Pick-Up
Rolls.
The Document Stoppers determine the leading edge position of the document loaded in
the ADF.
They are in the lowered position when in their standby position and raised when a docu-
ment take-up sequence is started.
The Pick-Up Rolls are in the raised position in their standby state and lowered when a
document take-up sequence is started, pressing the document set downward during the
sequence with the tension of the Document Pressure Springs.
The operation of the Document Stoppers and Pick-Up Rolls is controlled by Pick-Up
Motor, Pick-Up Sensor, and a cam.

7-3. Document Take-Up Mechanism
The Pick-Up Rolls and Take-Up Rolls turn to transport the document loaded in the Docu-
ment Feed Tray up to the Registration Roller.
The Single Feed Roller, on the other hand, turns to transport the document placed in the
Single Feed Tray.
The Pick-Up Rolls, Take-Up Rolls, and Single Feed Roller are driven by Take-Up Motor.
To drive the Single Feed Roller, Take-Up Motor is turned backward, at which time the
Take-Up Roll Shaft also turns backward. Because of the functioning of the one-way pul-
ley, however, the backward rotation of the shaft is not transmitted to the Pick-Up Rolls or
Take-Up Rolls.
The Front Separator Pads and Separator Pads together function to prevent double feed
when two or more pages of a document set are taken up.

11. MISCELLANEOUS
11-1. Document Size Detection Mechanism
The document size is determined by means of two different systems of document width
detection and document length detection.
(1) Document Width Detection
The width of an original is detected by the combination of the "L and "H states of Width
Sensors 1 PC5, 2 PC6, and 3 PC7, as detected while the original is being taken up.
Each sensor is located as follows with reference to the Document Edge Guide in the rear.
PC5: 236.5 mm; PC6: 268 mm; PC7: 288 mm
(2) Document Length Detection
The length of an original is detected by counting the number of pulses generated by Main
Motor for the period of time from when the Registration Roller starts turning to when the
trailing edge of the original moves past Registration Sensor.
ln the Single Feed mode, the period of time for counting the number of pulses is up to
when the trailing edge of the original moves past Single Feed Empty Sensor.

(1) Lift 1 Paper Take-Up Operations
Operation 1
After Lift 1 has compIeted its ascent motion, Paper Take-Up RoII 1 is driven.
Paper is transported untiI its Ieading edge activates the Paper Standby Position Sensor
(this position serves as the standby position for paper take-up).
Operation 2
A Paper Take-Up signaI is sent from the copier.
The Separator and Feed RoIIs, and Paper Take-Up RoII 1 work together to transport the
paper to the Registration Sensor.
When the Registration Sensor is activated, the paper is further transported over the dis-
tance between the Registration Sensor and VerticaI Transport RoIIer, pIus a registration
Ioop Iength.

6-5. Paper Separating Mechanism
The difference in friction coefficient between the Feed RoII and Separator RoII is used to
stop the rotation of the Separator RoII for the prevention of doubIe feed.
<NormaI Feeding>
<DoubIe Feeding>
6-6. Paper Pressure ReIeasing Mechanism
When the LCC is sIid out, the Pressure ReIease RaiI pushes the Separator RoII assy
downward so that it is reIeased from the Feed RoII.
When onIy one sheet of paper is taken up, the friction
coefficient on the top side of the paper is equaI to that
on the underside. The Separator RoII is driven by the
Feed RoII, which resuIts in the paper being fed on.
Feed RoII
Separator RoII
Paper
Driven or stationary
4425M012AA
Since the friction coefficient between the second
sheet of paper and the Separator RoII is greater than
that between the first and second sheets of paper,
the Separator RoII remains stationary, aIIowing the
Feed RoII to feed onIy the first sheet of paper.

6-8. LCC-in-Position Detection
When the LCC is sIid into the copier, the Iight bIocking pIate bIocks the LCC Set Sensor

6-9. Edge Guides and TraiIing Edge Stop
The TraiIing Edge Stop is secured to the specified size position with a screw. (It is not
instaIIed when Letter Crosswise paper is to be Ioaded.)
The Edge Guides can be sIid to the specified size positions and secured with screws.
The SIides of the drawer must be sIid aII the way in the directions of the arrows.
When the positions of the Edge Guides and TraiIing Edge Stop have been changed, the
corresponding paper size must be set (according to the "Paper Size Setting procedures
that foIIow).
6-10. Paper Size Setting
Paper sizes that can be set: B5C, A4C, Letter C
After the Edge Guides and TraiIing Edge Stop have been repositioned, fIip keys of the
DIP switch on the LCC ControI Board to the positions corresponding to the paper size as
detaiIed beIow.

6-2. Paper Switchback Mechanism
When the last paper of the first copy set is transported onto the Finisher Tray during a
multi-copy cycle in the Sort Staple mode, the first paper of the subsequent copy set,
which is to be next transported, undergoes a switchback sequence. The paper for the
switchback is transported via the lower paper path.
The second paper of the second copy set is placed over the paper which has undergone
the switchback sequence. After the first copy set has been fed into the Elevator Tray, the
first and second sheets of paper of the second copy set are together transported onto the
Finisher Tray.
The switchback sequence of the paper is performed by turning the motor backward,
which turns the Lower Path Transport Roller and Storage Roller backward.
The sheet of paper to be transported next to the one subjected to the switchback
sequence is transported via the upper paper path.
No switchback sequence is carried out if the interval between sheets of paper is wide as
when using paper of a large size.

4643M031AH
The first sheet of paper of the second
copy set is transported via the lower
paper path.
4643M028AG
The first sheet of paper of the second
copy set undergoes the switchback
sequence and stops. The second
sheet of paper stops as soon as its
trailing edge leaves the Entrance
Roller.
4643M029AG
The first and second sheets of paper
of the second copy set are transported
together, one on top of the other.
4643M030AH
The Exit Rollers are pressed against
the Exit Roller to feed the sheets of
paper of the first copy set out. At the
same time, the first and second sheets
of paper of the second copy set are
transported toward the exit.
When the first copy set is fed out, the
Exit Roller starts turning backward to
transport the first and second sheets
of paper of the second copy set to the
Finisher Tray. The Exit Rollers leave
the Exit Roller.

6-3. RoIIer/RoIIers Spacing Mechanism
(1) Storage RoIIer/RoIIers Spacing Mechanism
The Storage Roller briefly stops when the first sheet of paper completes a switchback
sequence during a multi-copy cycle in the Sort Staple mode. lf, however, paper mea-
sures 217 mm or more in the FD direction, the leading edge of the second sheet of paper
reaches the Storage Roller before the roller stops turning. The Storage Roller is therefore
raised up to allow a given clearance from the Storage Rollers.
The Storage Roller is spaced from the Storage Rollers as a cam is turned by the corre-
sponding motor.
(2) Exit RoIIer/RoIIers Spacing Mechanism
Paper needs to be temporarily transported to the Finisher Tray in the Staple mode, which
makes it necessary to raise the Exit Rollers to provide a given clearance from the Exit
Roller.
After the stapling sequence has been completed, the Exit Rollers are lowered and
pressed against the Exit Roller so that the paper can be fed out.
The Exit Rollers are spaced from the Exit Roller as a lever is moved to the right and left
by the cam which is rotated by the motor.

7. PUNCH MECHANISM (FN-107)
The paper being transported through the Finisher is briefly stopped and holes are made
in a space near its trailing edge.
When the Punch Motor is energized and the electromagnetic spring clutch fitted to the
Punch Roller is energized, the Punch Bars move up and down to make holes in the
paper.
(Operation)
The Entrance Motor is energized and paper is allowed into the Finisher.
The trailing edge of the paper moves past the Paper Sensor of the Horizontal Transport
Unit.
A given period of time thereafter, the Upper Entrance Motor or Lower Entrance Motor is
deenergized to bring the paper to a stop.
The electromagnetic spring clutch is energized to turn the Punch Roller and the eccentric
cams.
The Punch Bars move up and down to make holes in the paper.
The Upper Entrance Motor or Lower Entrance Motor is energized to transport the paper.

pling.
(1) AIigning PIate
The Aligning Plate is moved to align the paper in the crosswise direction with reference
to the center position of the Finisher Tray.
The Aligning Plate is moved as the CD Aligning Motor turns forward or backward.
The CD Aligning Home Position Sensor detects the Aligning Plate at its home position.
The movement of the Aligning Plate is determined with this home position used as the
reference.
The movement of the plate is varied depending on the width of the paper.

9-3. StapIe Sheet Empty Detection
The Staple Empty Detecting Sensor is used to detect whether there is a staple sheet or
not in the Staple Cartridge.
When there are about 20 staples left in the Staple Cartridge, a staple sheet empty condi-
tion results and a staple-empty display is given on the control panel of the copier.
lf a staple sheet empty condition is detected during a stapling sequence, that particular
sequence is continued until it is completed. A staple empty display is then given.
After a new Staple Cartridge has been loaded, the Stapling Motor is energized until the
Self-Priming Sensor detects loaded staples (L), thereby feeding the staple sheet to the
stapling position.
