U.S. ARMY TRANSPORTATION SCHOOL WATERCRAFT OPERATOR COURSE SEAMANSHIP TRAINING SAFETY ANNEX I. INTRODUCTION:

This Annex is for resident and non-resident students involved in training aboard a vessel. It is developed to aid the instructor in the reduction or elimination of injury to the student during training. A. In order to reduce the risk of injury, the instructor will provide, or make sure others provide, all required safety equipment and thoroughly brief the students on all aspects of safety procedures prior to the commencement of training on board a vessel. The instructor, and all assistant instructors, will maintain a constant vigil, throughout the training, for any unsafe actions taken by the students or any other persons onboard the vessel. In the event of an unsafe act, the instructor is to make on-the-spot corrections. If necessary, stop training immediately until the situation is resolved. The safety of each student is your primary consideration. 1. Make sure all soldiers have a lifejacket before departing building 464 for the vessel. 2. When handling lines; do not wear gloves, do not stand in the bight of a line, do not stand in the danger zone, do not let your hand or fingers get between a line and the bitt or bollard. 3. Stay off the forecastle and gunwhales of the vessel when underway. 4. Stay, or enter, designated areas only. 5. Do not run during drills. Walk rapidly. 6. Listen to all commands and perform them in a safe manner. 7. Do not go out on deck at night by yourself. 8. Think safety at all times, act safely at all times. 9. If in doubt, presume a safety hazard does exist. 10. Notify the instructor, or a crew member immediately of any act you think is, or may be, unsafe. 11. Remember the adage, One hand for you, one hand for the boat. Always use hand rails when available. 12. No horseplay is to be tolerated, at any time, aboard a vessel.
