A day in a life of a personnel manager
Pamela Burns gets up every morning at seven, because she has to get to the station to
catch the 8:10 to the city. She usually drives to the station and lives her car in the station car
park. On the train she reads and sometimes looks through the papers in her briefcase to
remind herself of the days work.
When she arrives at her office about 9.00 her secretary has already put the mail and
faxes on her desk. She reads this and dictates the replies to letters that must be answered
immediately. She usually spends the morning interviewing candidates for jobs.
She has lunch every day with three or four colleagues in a restaurant near the office. In
the afternoon she has meetings with other managers, discussing their requirements for new
staff, and dictates letters to her secretary answering applications. Before going home, she
checks the wording of the job advertisements that are going to appear in the newspaper the
following day.
Generally, she has finished work by five oclock and catches the 5.20 train home, but in
busy days she has to stay, until much later. Pamela likes her job because it provides her with a
lot of variety. She enjoys the contract she has with different types of people and thinks her best
quality is her ability to make people feel at ease during interviews.
