Safety hints
For measuring systems used in hazardous areas, the legal requirements have to be observed! Ensure that all personnel are suitably qualified. Observe the specifications in the certificate as well as national and local standards and regulations. ATTENTION: To avoid electrostatic discharge damage to the device, make sure you are well grounded before touching the electronics.

Device certified for use in explosion hazardous area

Advice for repair Spare parts

If the device has this symbol embossed on its name plate it can be installed in an explosion hazardous area.

The instrument may only be maintained and repaired by qualified personnel. The device documentation, applicable standards and legal requirements as well as any certificates have to be observed!

Only modular assemblies may be exchanged against identical, original Endress+Hauser spare parts! Cable glands for Ex-devices may only be replaced with the same type (observe marking on packaging and permissible temperature range, T>75 C).

Test

Ex d-devices:

Attention has to be paid not to damage the threads. In other case, the part has to be exchanged. The repair has to be performed such, that the voltage isolation of the Ex ia circuits against ground is maintained. If required, a test can be performed with 500 Veff over a time period of 60 s.

Ex i-devices:

Documentation

Any repair of a certified device has to be documented! This includes stating the device serial number, date of repair, type of repair and name of the repair technician.

Operation principle of the Liquiphant M/S

The sensor, shaped like a tuning fork, is excited in its resonance frequency (oscillation circuitry) by means of a piezo driver. An immersion into a liquid medium causes the resonance frequency to decrease. This frequency change is evaluated in the CPU and transmitted to the output stage as a binary signal via an opto-coupler (galvanical separation). An external load like a relay, PLC or separate switching device can then generate a safety reaction. The limit switch can be set to either minimum or maximum failsafe mode, depending on the application. In case of a power fail, the electronic switch will be "open" or a relay will be de-energized.

Liquiphant M/S

The electronics of Liquiphant M/S

Nine electronics are available for Liquiphant M and Liquiphant S. They are used depending on the application and safety requirements (certificates). FEL51: 2-wire AC connection 19...253 V AC FEL52: 3-wire DC connection 10...55 V DC FEL54: Universal current connection 19...253 V AC or 19...55 V DC with relay output FEL55: 2-wire connection for separate switching unit e.g. PLC FEL56: 2-wire connection for separate switch amplifier according to NAMUR (L-H edge) FEL58: 2-wire connection for separate switch amplifier according to NAMUR (H-L edge) FEL57: 2-wire connection, PFM signal for separate switching unit Nivotester FEL50A: 2-wire connection for power supply and data transfer, connection to PROFIBUS PA FEL50D: 2-wire connection for connecting to the density and concentration computer FML621. ATTENTION: This electronic insert cannot be installed in devices that were originally used as a limit switch.

Electronic inserts FEL5x, connection data

The illustrations show the functional wiring in an installation. Hints regarding the applicable national or international installation guidelines for explosion hazardous areas must be observed. It is mandatory to take into account the grounding concept used by the customer. Connection data (load) FEL51 Relays with a minimum holding power/rated power >2.5 VA at 253 V AC (10 mA) or >0.5 VA at 24 V AC (20 mA) Relays with a lower holding power/rated power can be operated by means of an RC module connected inparallel. For example: Fischer & Tausche Type 9725 A, 0.5 m 220 , 250 V~, HPF565 P1 Relays with a maximum holding power/rated power <89 VA at 253 V AC or <8.4 VA at 24 V AC Voltage drop across FEL51 max. 12 V Residual current with blocked thyristor max. 3,8 mA Max. load current 375 VA at 253 V or max. 36 VA at 24 V (not shortcircuit proof) The external load must not be to small. Due to the residual current (max. 3.8 mA) required for the operation of the electronics, a relay with a low energizing current would be correctly energized but not properly return to the non-energized failsafe position. In such cases, an additional shunt resistor can be used to reduce the relay current. Example: A shunt resistor of 39 k / 2W is recommended for an OMRON relay type MY4/220V.

Test circuit dor PFM devices

ATTENTION: This measurement may not be performed in an Ex area! The test circuit only applies to Liquiphant M with electronic insert FEL57. This electronic insert converts the signal from the tuning fork into a pulse frequency modulation (PFM). The output signal jumps from a high to a low PFM frequency when the sensor is covered. The PFM signal can only be processed by the listed E+H Nivotesters. current pulses of approximately 11 mA are superimposed to the supply current, as shown on the oscillogram in order to measure the signal current, a test resistor of approximately 10 Ohms must be inserted into the negative line between the FEL57 and the Nivotester FTL... an oscilloscope must be connected parallel to the resistor for the test, the fork oscillates freely or is manually dampened the Nivotester FTL325P/375P must then change it switching status The PFM signals must then appear as shown, adjustments cannot be made.

Disassembly of Liquiphant M/S

The Liquiphant M family consists of 5 different instrument types: FTL50/51, FTL51C and FTL50H/51H. The family contains a compact design (FTL50), a version with extension pipe (FTL51), a coated sensor (FTL51C) as well as a polished fork for the use in hygienic applications (FTL50H/51H). The Liquiphant S family covers two different instrument types - the compact design of FTL70 and the version with extension pipe FTL71. Each instrument type of Liquiphant M and Liquiphant S can be combined with various housings, electronics and process connections. The mounting of the electronic insert and the sensor is identical for all instruments. For instruments with housing T13/F13, the sensor and the housing are screwed together.

Loosen screw from mounting adapter (for stainless steel housing F15 only). Loosen external circlip from sensor head using circlip pliers. Then remove mounting parts. Disconnect ground cable from external circlip. Separate sensor from housing (also at extended version) for devices with housing F15/16/17, the sensor must be pulled down out of the housing. for devices with housing F13, the sensor must be screwed out of the housing (12 turns).

Diagnostics at Liquiphant M/S

Each electronics features "diagnostics outputs" providing measuring signals for control purpose. These include the sensor oscillation signal, the switching signal and the identifier of the electronics version. Using small probes (i. e. wire < 1 mm ), the signal frequency and amplitude can be monitores on an oscilloscope. Identification resistor FEL51 = 1k000 FEL52 = 1k540 FEL54 = 2k260 FEL55 = 3k320 FEL56 = 4k870 FEL57 = 6k810 FEL58 = 8k210 FEL50A = 10k000 Switching signal without delay Opposed to the switching output at the terminal block, which is always delayed by 0.5 seconds, this signal is taken directly from the processor. Advantage: eventual erroneous switching caused by external vibration can be detected with an oscilloscope. fork free =0V fork covered = approx. 4.8 V Sensor signal The sensor signal has an offset of approx. 4 V DC. The amplitude is approx. 2 Vss. The signal is in saturation, therefore not a sine wave. The frequency of the fork is: - not covered / in air approx. 900...1200 Hz - covered to switch point approx. 850 Hz (10...15% below resonance frequency) The frequency depends on the insertion depth, the amplitude on the viscosity.

If the piezo and the connecting flexible conductor strip are in order, a dampened sine wave can be measured at the respective test points. This test is only a function test, it does not allow a statement about the quality of the sensor. A check of the data stored in the EEPROM or an exchange of the EEPROM is not possible. ATTENTION: For the coated sensors of the Liquiphant M and the sensors of Liquiphant S, the Signal Out is approx. 4 times higher than the Signal In!

ATTENTION! The socket can be turned, there is no stop. There is a risk of twisting off the flexible conductor strip!
