What are Measurement Categories (CAT I, CAT II, etc...)?

Overview Electricaltest&measurementtoolswillbeassignedto4differentdesignationsfromI-IV.Thesecategoriescanbeconfusing;therefore,NationalInstrumentshasdevelopedthistutorialtohelp customersunderstandwhatthesecategoriesmean.Toolsthatinteractwithelectricityaredesignedforspecificapplicationsandconditions.Exceedingordeviatingfromapplicationparametercan leadtoinaccuratemeasurementsorinjury.Withthatsaid,let'stakeacloserlookatthefourprimarymeasurementcategoriesforelectricaltools. Measurementcategoriescanbebrokendownintoseveralcategories:CATI,CATII,CATIII,andCATIV. Measurement Category I: Thiscategoryisformeasurementsofvoltagesfromspeciallyprotectedsecondarycircuits.Suchvoltagemeasurementsincludesignallevels,specialequipment,limited-energypartsofequipment, circuitspoweredbyregulatedlow-voltagesources,andelectronics. Measurement Category II: Thiscategoryreferstolocal-levelelectricaldistribution,suchasthatprovidedbyastandardwalloutletorpluginloads(forexample,115ACvoltageforU.S.or200ACvoltageforEurope). ExamplesofMeasurementCategoryIIaremeasurementsperformedonhouseholdappliances,portabletools,andsimilarmodules. Measurement Category III: Thiscategoryreferstomeasurementsonhard-wiredequipmentinfixedinstallations,distributionboards,andcircuitbreakers.Otherexamplesarewiring,includingcables,busbars,junctionboxes, switches,socketoutletsinthefixedinstallation,andstationarymotorswithpermanentconnectionstofixedinstallations. Measurement Category IV: Thiscategoryreferstooriginofinstallationorutilitylevelmeasurementsonprimaryover-currentprotectiondevicesandonripplecontrolunits.
