INDIAN RED CROSS SOCIETY UDUPI DISTRICT BRANCH The Red Cross Society deals with providing disaster

r relief, emergency assistance, medical services and education to raise awareness regarding health related issues throughout the world. The Indian Red Cross society was formed during the first world war in 1917. It was a time when India had no organization for relief services to the affected soldiers except for a branch of the St. Johns ambulance association and a joint committee of British Red Cross. A bill to constitute the Indian Red Cross Society, Independent of the British Red Cross, was introduced in the Indian Legislative Council on March 3, 1920 by Sir Claude Hill, member of the Viceroy's Executive Council and Chairman of the Joint War Committee in India. The Bill was passed on March 17, 1920 and became Act XV of 1920 with the assent of the Governor General on the March 20, 1920. Currently, the society has over 700 branches all over India. The organization works on its 7 core principles which are: Humanity Impartiality Neutrality Independence Voluntary service Unity Universality

The UDUPI district branch of the Red Cross society is located in Ajjarkad, Udupi Karnataka near the educational town of Manipal. The UDUPI branch of the Indian Red Cross Society is one amongst the 700+ branches in India. It has 12 patron members, 4 vice patron members and 1161 life members as on 31st march 2011. The major sources of funds are donations from citizens, membership to the Red Cross Society and sale of first aid kit. Donations: The donations made towards Indian red cross society form a good part of the funds raised. Any donation made towards the Red Cross is exempted from income tax. The donation from local bodies for the year 2010-11 was Rs 85,400.The challenge with the organization is to improve awareness amongst the masses and increase the amount of donation that is received. Membership: The membership to the Red Cross Society is at different levels. The members are classified as Patron and Life members. The amount charged from patron members is Rs 20000 and the amount charged for membership from life member is Rs 550. Another group of members called as vice patron members have a membership fee of Rs 10000. The organization raised Rs 1,98,550 from life members and Rs 1,30,000 from Patron members in the year 2010-11. Considering the benefit of being a member of the Red Cross Society, they plan to involve interested volunteers especially from amongst the students from the nearby schools and colleges. First Aid Safety Kit: The Udupi branch of the Red Cross society teamed with another NGO which serves HIV + patients and started manufacturing First aid kits. This helped Red Cross in raising funds for itself and at the same time it gave an employment opportunity to the HIV + victims. The first aid kits come in 2 packages: Red outer Body(Supplied to industries) Green outer body(Supplied to Police for Naxal operations)

The kit contains 52 items and the selling price of the kit is Rs 750.The demand of the first aid kit is very erratic and currently the production of the kit has been stopped. The organization intends to target Households, Auto Rickshaw drivers, Bus Drivers for selling the first aid kit. Taking into consideration the growing demand from these segments, they plan to produce a kit at a price of Rs 250. Other Sources Occasionally, they organize fund raiser events like the annual festival on the eve of the Red Cross Day. An entry fee of Rs. 10 per person is changed and collected as donation towards Red Cross activities held throughout the year. The mechanized rescue boats remains non-operational during the non-rainy seasons (winter). They plan to use it for generating revenue during this period. The mechanized boat has a capacity of 20 persons and a fiber boat of capacity 6 persons. These can be employed for ferrying tourists across the river or the sea at Maravanthe, Kapu and other tourist places nearby.

Expansion Plans The organization has sent a proposal to the Government of India to start a DDRC (District Disability and Rehabilitation centre at Vasundaranagar near Kallianpur, Udupi. Once sanctioned, they would require Rs. 50,00,000 for the project. They have plans to construct another floor in the existing building to add extra capacity. The organization is also considering a trauma centre in the highways to provide immediate assistance to victims of road accidents. The Road Ahead: The Udupi branch of the Indian Red Cross Society has expansion plans to render better services to the society. However, they are in need of more funds from the existing or new sources. While there is a need to increase the membership to Red Cross and donation to development funds, they also need to find alternative ways of gathering funds. The branch also requires proper planning to direct its efforts in the proper direction to increase the awareness and use of first aid, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and ailments. The success of the Red Cross Society, Udupi depends on how effectively they market their existing products and find new ways to raise funds.
