September 4, 2012 Dear Parents or Guardians: Beginning mid-September to mid-October, all English Learners (ELs) in the Los Angeles

Unified School District will be taking the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). This series of tests measures how well your child has progressed in their English language development in the four areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students need a score of at least a 3 in each of the above areas and an overall score of 4 or 5 to pass the test. Passing this test allows your child to be re-designated as RFEP (Re-designated Fluent English Proficient) instead of being classified as an EL (English Learner). RFEP means that students are at a level of English proficiency that allows them the following: they can take elective courses, such as art, music, and drama, instead of additional periods of English preparation during the day, and they are ready to take the next higher English class that helps them meet the districts new A-G requirement . The new A-G requirement is the type of courses students must pass in high school in order to earn a diploma. At ______________Middle School, we feel that we must do everything that we can to provide every English Learner with every opportunity to do well on this exam. Results of the CELDT test provide valuable information about the English Language Arts academic achievement of our students and help us meet their academic needs. Your child will be participating in workshops during Homeroom to help strengthen her/his skills prior to each section of the exam. It is important, therefore, that students actively participate in the workshop, as well as do their best on the test. The test is not timed. Students should take their time and complete the test as accurately as possible. Please make sure your child attends school, gets a good nights rest, has a healthy breakfast, and arrives to school on time. Attendance is very important. It would be greatly appreciated if conflicting appointments (e.g. routine doctors, dentists, etc.) are not scheduled during the school day in the month of the testing period. We thank you for your support in making sure that your child does her/his very best on the CELDT. If you have any questions, please call ________ @ Sincerely,
