fundamental jiu-jitsu techniques


Guillotine - standing

The blue fighter and his opponent stand in fight ready position. His opponent shoots in for a double leg takedown. The blue fighter uses his right arm to wrap his opponents neck (1) and his hand to lift his opponents chin. The blue fighter uses his left hand to hold his right (2) while arching his hips and pulling back (3). Note: The blue fighter closes his elbows to secure his opponents head and neck at all times.

The blue fighter starts in the sitting guard position controlling his opponents sleeve and lapel (1). The blue fighter uses his left hand to push his opponents head down and wraps his right arm around his opponents head, gripping his other hand (3). The blue fighter lays back to his right and moves his left leg over his opponents back while arching his hips.

Kimura from the closed guard

The blue fighter has his opponent in his closed guard one hand controlling his wrist, the other holding the lapel (1). The blue fighter reaches with his right arm and loops it around his opponents right arm to hold his own wrist (3). The blue fighter lies on his back switching his hips from left to right and secures his right leg over his opponents back (6). Note: The blue fighter never releases his grip and control of his opponents arm. He finishes his opponent by forcing his opponents arm behind and up his back.

CHOKE FROM THE CLOSED GUARD

The blue fighter has his opponent in his closed guard controlling him by the sleeve and lapel. The blue fighter uses both of his hands and legs to pull his opponent down. The blue fighter cross grips his opponents collar with his right hand, four fingers in (1), then moves his left hand under his right arm to grip his opponents collar on the opposite side, four fingers in (2). The blue fighter brings his elbows to the mat and chokes his opponent (3).

The blue fighter has his opponent in his closed guard controlling his opponents right arm (1). The blue fighter opens his guard and uses his left foot on his opponents hip to angle his body (2). Then his right leg over his opponents back while isolating opponents right arm. The blue fighter quickly moves his left leg over his opponents head and arches his hips, never releasing the right arm of his opponent (3).

TRIANGLE FROM SPIDER GUARD

The blue fighter starts with both feet on this opponents hips and controlling both sleeves (2). He proceeds to the spider guard position by moving his right foot to his opponents left bicep (3). The blue fighter pulls his opponent down and wraps his right leg around his opponents neck and figure fours his legs (5) while using both hands to pull down on his opponents head (6).

BUTTERFLY GUARD SWEEP

The blue fighter controls his opponent, sitting in the butterfly guard position (1). The blue fighter holds his opponents back by the belt, while controlling his opponents right arm. The blue fighter sits back and to his left, while using his right leg to lift his opponents left leg (4), sweeping him and finishing on top (6).

VARIATION SIDE CONTROL

Side control 1 The blue fighter lies across his opponents upper body, chest to chest, with his left knee blocking his opponents left hip. The blue fighters right arm is under his opponents head, while his left arm is under his opponents right arm.

Side control 2 The blue fighter lies across his opponents upper body, lying on his side. The blue fighters right arm holds his opponents left arm, while his left arm is under his opponents right arm. Side control 3 The blue fighter lies across his opponents upper body, his back to his opponents head, with his right knee blocking his opponents left hip. The blue fighters right elbow is blocking his opponents right arm, while his left and holds his opponents left knee.

COLLAR CHOKE

The blue fighter starts in the side control position (1). The blue fighter moves his right hand and grips his opponents collar with four fingers in (2), then moves his right arm over his opponents head to grip his opponents collar on the opposite side, thumb in (4). The blue fighter finishes by driving his elbow to the ground (5).

CHOKE FROM KNEE ON BELLY

The blue fighter starts in the knee on belly position (1). The blue fighter moves his left hand to grip his opponents lapel (left side) with four fingers in (2). The blue fighter moves his right hand over his opponents head, gripping the lapel on opponents right side with his thumb in. Blue fighter drives his right elbow to the mat (3).

BASEBALL BAT CHOKE

The blue fighter starts in the knee on belly position (1). The blue fighter uses his left hand to loosen his opponents gi, wrapping it under the arm and around the back of his opponents neck (2), then switches the grip to his right hand. The blue fighter grips the same gi with his fingers inside and folds his left arm choking his opponent (3).

The blue fighter starts in the mount position (1) controlling his opponent by the collar and sleeve. The blue fighter switches his right hand to hold his opponents right wrist and left hand to hold his opponents right arm (2). The blue fighter holds his opponents right arm down with his elbow against his opponents head (3) and threads his left arm under his opponents arm, holding his own wrist (5). The blue fighter pulls his opponents arm down with hands on the mat and lifting at the elbow (6).

Armbar from the mount

The blue fighter starts in the mount position(1). As his opponent tries to push him off with one hand on the chest and the other on the blue fighters hips, the soldier cross-controls one of his opponents arms(2). The blue fighter lifts left knee while using his right hand on the opponents neck or arm(3). The blue fighter sits midway, swings his right leg over his opponents head, in a squat position (5), falling back while controlling his opponents arm (6). Note: The blue fighter must arch his hips and ensure his opponents thumb faces upward to achieve the maximum leverage.

REAR NAKED CHOKE

The blue fighter controls his opponent from the back with his left arm under his opponents left arm, holding the forearm (1). His right arm is under his opponents right arm and holding the lapel (3). The blue fighter uses his right hand to grab his opponents left sleeve then uses his right leg to hook his opponents right leg to pull his opponent onto his back (6).

REAR NAKED CHOKE FROM BACK

The blue fighter takes his opponents back with both hooks (feet) around his opponents legs (1). The blue fighter maintains control with both arms under his opponents. The blue fighter quickly switches uses right hand to hold his opponents collar (2). Then he uses his left hand behind his opponents head. He finishes by pulling the collar while simultaneously pushing his left hand behind his opponents head (3).

Rear naked choke from back control

The blue fighter takes his opponents back with both hooks (feet) around his opponents legs. The blue fighter maintains control with one arm under his opponents arm and the other over for the under-over hold. The blue fighter quickly switches uses right hand to hold his opponents shoulder (1). Then he uses his left hand to hold his right hand to control his opponent. He finishes by holding his left bicep with his right hand and threading his left arm behind his opponents head (2). Note: The blue fighter keeps his head close to his opponents head and squeezes his arms together for the quick submission (3).

Foot lock

The blue fighter works to pass the open guard (1). He uses his right arm to wrap and control his opponents left leg while he sits back and arches his hips (3). Note: The blue fighter uses his left hand to control his opponents right leg. The blue fighter uses his right foot on his opponents hip to keep him from getting up. The blue fighter uses both his hands to finish the submission.
