Problem:
When baking soda and vinegar are combined, will there be a physical or chemical change?
Research:
Baking Soda:
Vinegar:
Materials:
Procedure:
1. Using your graduated cylinder, measure 30mL of vinegar from the beaker. 2. Place the plastic bottle on the table and carefully add the 30 of vinegar into it. 3. Put the thermometer into the liquid in the plastic bottle. Leave the thermometer there for 60 seconds; 4. Record the temperature of the liquid in Celsius: __________ 5. Open the mouth of the balloon (put the 1 st 2 fingers, not the thumb, on each hand inside of the mouth of the balloon and stretch). 6. Using the spoon, have a lab partner put a teaspoon of baking soda inside of the balloon. 7. Without spilling the baking soda out of the balloon, stretch the mouth of the balloon over the mouth of the bottle. 8. Turn the balloon upright so the baking soda falls into the bottle. If needed, you can SLIGHTLY swirl it to mix in the baking soda. 9. OBSERVE until the reaction has stopped! ! ! 10. Record the temperature of the liquid mixture in Celsius: __________
2. What signs of chemical changes did you see? List ALL of them.
Conclusion:
Was your Hypothesis correct or incorrect? Identify if adding baking soda to vinegar was a chemical or physical change. List the signs of a chemical reaction that you observed to support your answer. Is there anything you can do better next time to be more accurate?

Standards:
6.6.1 Formulate a testable hypothesis that can be answered through a controlled experiment.
Grade:
Exceeds
Student is able to make a testable hypothesis that includes a prediction that is supported with a reason. The hypothesis is well written (if, then, because) and reasoning is thorough
Meets
Student is able to make a testable hypothesis that includes a prediction. Hypothesis is written in the "if, then because format"
Criteria
6.6.8 Recognizes changes that indicate a chemical reaction has taken place.
Grade: Criteria
Exceeds
Student is able to recognize that a chemical reaction has taken place. Student is also able to list 3 signs of a chemical reaction from the experiment
Meets
Student is able to recognize that a chemical reaction has taken place. Student is also able to list 1-2 signs of a chemical reaction from the experiment
