com Qualifications I, Derek Joyce, am a student at Georgia Southern Universitys Counselor Education, M.Ed. program with an emphasis on clinical mental health. I am pending graduation in May 2014. I am a member of the ACA, Psi Chi, and Chi Sigma Iota. When including my practicum-based courses I have been practicing in counseling for two years under the supervision of the university and one of the staff of my practice site. Counseling Background In previous years, I have practice working with elementary school children using play therapy in a personcentered framework, young adult college students with an existential and CBT framework, utilizing techniques such as role play, verbal retraining, career counseling, and substance-abusing adults using split self, role play, miracle question, and psychoeducation with a CBT framework. In my current site, I co-facilitate with another therapist using psychoeducation and person-centered therapies in a group setting to address issues related to substance abuse, recovery, and mental illness. Session Fees and Length of Service As an intern, I personally do not charge fees for service. This is under the policies and jurisdiction of whichever site I am working at. Therefore, please consult with your choice of site for fees and length of service. At my current internship site, sessions are 3-5 days per week for three hours per day, between the hours of 9 am and 12 noon. The time between enrollment and graduation from the program is projected to be 3-5 weeks, though this may be altered to meet specific clients needs. Use of Diagnosis Some health insurance companies will reimburse clients for counseling services and some will not. In addition, most will require that a diagnosis of a mental-health condition and indicate that you must have an illness before they will agree to reimburse you. Some conditions for which people seek counseling do not qualify for reimbursement. If a qualifying diagnosis is appropriate in your case, I will inform you of the diagnosis before we submit the diagnosis to the health insurance company. Any diagnosis made will become part of your permanent insurance records. Confidentiality All of our communication becomes part of the clinical record, which is accessible to you upon request. I will keep confidential anything you say as part of our counseling relationship, with the following exceptions: (a) you direct me in writing to disclose information to someone else, (b) it is determined you are a danger to yourself or others (including child or elder abuse), or (c) I am ordered by a court to disclose information.
