Context This Unit has three core purposes: to introduce you to learning at undergraduate level to orientate you within your course, the College and the University to induct you into the specific practices and knowledge base of your discipline The Unit will enable you to acquire and improve your skills, understanding and approaches to learning that underpin your studies in Stage I, in your course as a whole, and beyond. Emphasis is placed on the skills needed to locate, navigate and communicate information effectively and appropriately. You will be introduced to resources that to support your studies.

1. Brief Description/Specification of Task Unit 1 is supported by the Design Contexts Lecture Programme (see timetable) . You are required to keep a development file that will contain assessment & tutorial records and notes from the Design Contexts lecture programme. For more detail please refer to individual assignment briefing sheets Design Contexts Essay Lecture Notes/ Research: You should write your own notes for each one of the Design Contexts Lectures and keep these notes in your Development File. These notes will form starting points for your own independent research. The Design Contexts written assignment.

Indicative Content The areas listed below will be explored through topics relevant to your particular discipline and course The world of higher education: key aspects of the learning culture on your course, at your College and in UAL. An introduction to key ideas that relate to Design history and contemporary Design practice and criticism. How to develop a research methodology, which involves using London as a resource.

Using self-reflection and critical analysis as an integral part of your learning experience. Communicating your ideas, visually, verbally and in writing. Introduction and induction in to available processes and resources. Visits to resource venues and Institutions as a means of developing meaningful and productive research methodologies. Learning Outcomes and (Marking Criteria) evidence of engagement with the principles and practices of your discipline. ( Subject Knowledge) an ability to locate and evaluate information from a range of written and/or visual sources. (Research) an ability to communicate ideas and arguments in an academic form.
