TASK 2 Devise a series of activities to elicit reader response from your pupils.

Based on at least one story type and be used over a two period lesson. STORY : NIOU NIOU THE FISH WHO WANTED TO TRAVEL THE WORLD. I. Activities before the story There are several possible purposes in using activities before telling a story. Some of them are: For getting the childrens attention for the whole storytelling session. Arousing their predicting skills. Focusing their minds on the content of the story.

When children try to predict what the story might be about, it helps them to be ready with any possible meanings and new vocabulary. Indirectly, this increases the probability of their understanding the gist of the story when they hear it. ACTIVITY 1: Asking questions to focus on detail Teacher can ask a question that can only be answered by the story. For example, before telling the story of Niou Niou the fish who wanted to travel the world, teacher may ask students. For example: I am going to tell you a story about a little fish who wanted to travel all around the world. Why did he want to do that? What do you think? This activity achieves several purposes at the same time. It can help: To create story readiness among the children. Encourage the students involvement. Help to focuses the childrens minds on what the story is going to be about. Getting their feedback by having two-ways interaction between teacher and students.

II.

Activities during the story In our opinion, it may be better for the children to simply sit and listen to the story.

However, simple activities can be conducted in order to ensure the children understanding throughout the story. Hence, activities during the story are essential. Moreover, the children with low-proficiency children often have difficulty in focusing. Thus, it is important for teacher to keep on checking whether they are still with the story or not. ACTIVITY 2: Imagine - how would you feel? While telling the story, the teacher can stop for a while and ask the children on how they would feel or what they would do if they are in the situation. For example, the teacher may asks the children to close their eyes and listen the teacher description Imagine that you are the little blue fish. He wants to play. He wants to talk and laugh with someone. But there is no one else with him. What can he do? What does he say to himself? What does he think? The teacher will walk around the room, touch a child on the shoulder, and asks question. After the children answered, the teacher may lift his or her hands again, walk around and asks other children. ACTIVITY 3: Write Into Find a hole in the story where the character disappears (off from scene) for a time being. Teacher can ask the children to describe what the characters do when we cannot see them. For example, Teacher may ask the student to think on what Piou Piou was doing during Niou Niou went back home ( During the scene, it only describes Niou Nious actions after arrived at home).

III.

Activities after the story There are many types of activities that can be done after telling the story. The

purposes are: To test childrens understanding of the story. Help to develop childrens creativity. Learn to adapt new vocabularies. In order to prevent the children to lose their attention towards the last session, teacher must learn to improvise the traditional exercises (writing or sequencing and many more) into fun and interactive activities. ACTIVITY 4: Second chance Talk or write about how it would change the story if a certain character had made a different decision earlier in the story. The teacher may ask the childrens opinion or asks them to predict on different outcome based on the different decision made by the protagonist. For example, teacher can asks children What if Niou Niou did not agreed to play with Piou Piou and continue on his journey? What will happen next? This activity serves the children to think analytically about the stories they hear. The imagination can be trigger and indirectly helps them to improve their creative thinking. ACTIVITY 5: Maze This activity includes picture may create fun and interesting environment. The students may improve their penmanship skill also. Besides, the students may feel happy as they help Niou-Niou to travel to a safer place to live a happy life. CONCLUSION Based on all of the activities above, my group may focus more on listening and speaking skills. Therefore, we may use the worksheet given or may only need a verbal response from the students. Yet, we need to ensure that all the students are involved and the students are responding or answering our questions. On the other hand, if we are using the worksheet, the focus skill may be mostly on writing. Hence, this may ensure that the students have enough time to give their own opinion or use their imagination widely.
