Three Wins, Personal Bests Highlight Central Meet

By Jeff McKinney DAVENPORTWhile announcing the line ups before last Thursdays dual meet, Davenport Centrals pool was referred to as the most historic venue in the Quad Cities. That euphemistic reference for the subterranean, four-lane relic drew a chuckle from the swimmers, coaches and spectators alike, and was one or the few highlights of the meet for Tipton. By the end of the night the Tigers managed three wins and multiple personal-best swims, but only two seconds and four thirds en route to a 54-30 loss that ended the teams string dual meet wins. Junior Ellie Siech claimed two of those first-place finishes. Her first was a PB 27.35 in the 50 Free, followed by her season-best 1:23.45 effort in the 100 Breaststroke. Tipton senior Rebecca Darling, competing in the 100 Back for the first time in two years, won the event with a PB 1:21.40 effort for the Tigers third individual win. Tiptons Kara Gravert, Hannah Cummins, Kayla Phelps and Mady Siech teamed to finish the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay. Gravert and Mady also earned their teams two second-place finishes. The personal best charge for the Tigers was lead by Hannah Cummins, Cindy Meyer and Sammy Reynolds who all had three each. Tipton traveled to Cedar Rapids Saturday to compete in the Warrior JV Invitational, a meet featuring junior varsity squads from the largest programs in Eastern Iowa. The Tigers doubled their point total from last year and took 9th in the 11-team field. The Tigers then capped a tiring stretch of three road meets in five days by traveling to Williamsburg Monday night for a four-meet invitational. The story and results from Williamsburg will appear in next weeks paper.

Those entries were Dennis McAtee of Oxford Junction, Jan Carstens of Wilton, Gary Mullen of Tipton and Judy Ohrt of Tipton. So, to find a first and second place winner, the tiebreaking score from the Wilton-Iowa City Regina football game was used. The Regals beat Wilton 45 to 27 for a combined tiebreaking score of 72. Tiebreaking picks were McAtee 46, Carstens 42, Mullen 63 and Ohrt 63.
