Alien Alien is a classic science fiction/ horror directed by Ridley Scott, and is one of the most famous films

in its genre, this is because of the great use of suspense; At its most fundamental level, "Alien" is a movie about things that can jump out of the dark and kill you and One of the great strengths of "Alien" is its pacing. It takes its time. It waits. It allows silences. All this create and added to the suspense and adds to the movie and in all makes it that much more scary.

The inside of the ship resembles the sets in the 2001 A Space Odyssey with the use of narrow corridors and get use of one point perspective so that we as the audience focus on a specific thing. In on of the scenes the use of one point perspective adds to the thrill and suspense; Dallas the head captain is crawling through the airshafts of the ships to find the alien and see if it reacts to heat. In this scene there is a great use of lighting where you can on see minimal amounts (only where the light is) so this alien can jump out of nowhere. With him being in the awkward and difficult situation it makes the audience feel scared and uncomfortable too

The movie also portrays a lot of sexual representations. As the film goes on Ripley (the lead actress) plays more of a role (taking lead and being in control) and back in the 1970s women characters were not seen as leading ladies and being the heroins. Furthermore she was the heroin; she is the last one surviving on the ship and when she thinks she beaten the alien she begins too strip and this makes her less of a character then she actually was. One of the astronauts was the enemy. I feel this was obvious when watching the film however the fact that he was a robot was a bit of a shock. Before the was killed he uses a rolled up magazine in her mouth (to some extent regarded as being raped). Another cultural context relevant to Alien is that of sexually transmitted diseases and also shows this is when the alien is wrapped around the astronaut head. Because an alien then comes from inside him (gave birth to the alien) this vile creature.
