CALENDARS

ODD DAYS: The no. of days more than the complete no. of weeks in a given period are called odd days. Therefore, K odd days = (7 * n + K) Eg: 89 days R(89/7) = 5 5 odd days is equal to 89 days 365 days = 7*n +k

Note:1. In an ordinary year 365 days there are 52 weeks and 1 odd day. 2. In a leap year 366 days there are 52 weeks and 2 odd days. Ordinary Year and Leap Year Every year which is exactly divisible by 4 (other than century) is known as leap year. Eg: 1988, 1992, 1996 etc If nth year is a leap year. Every 4 years of that year will be a leap year. They form an Arithmetic Progression. Also, for a century year If the year is divisible by 400 then it is a leap year otherwise not even if it is divisible by 4. Eg: 400, 800,1200 etc are leap year but 700,500,600 etc are not leap year because it is not divisible by 400. In a century or 100 years method of finding odd days:No of leap years 100/4 = 25-1 = 24 leap years and 76 ordinary years. 76 odd days in ordinary year 48 odd days in leap year total odd days 76 + 48 = 124 odd days R(124/7) = 5 odd days (ans.) Note: 100 years contain 5 odd days 200 years contain 5*2 = 10 odd days = R(10/7) = 3 odd days 300 years contain 5*3 = 15 odd days= R(15/7) = 1 odd day 400 years contain 5*4 = 20 odd days = R(20/7) = 6 odd days +1 day = 0 days

Application of odd days To find the day of the week

Type 1 :When the reference day is given Eg: Jan 1, 1992 was a Wednesday. What day of the week will it be on 1993. Solution: 1992 is a leap year therefore, there will be 2 odd days. Thus 1 jan, 1993 will be a Friday. Type 2 :When no reference day is given In this case we count days according to the no of odd days Sunday 0 odd day Monday 1 odd day Tuesday 2 odd days Wednesday 3 odd days Thursday 4 odd days Friday- 5 odd days Saturday 6 odd days Eg: - Find the day of the week on 12th Jan, 1979. 1979 = 1978 + 12 days 1600 0 odd days 300 3*5 = 15 = R(15/7) = 1 odd day 78 (78/4) = 19 leap years + 59 ordinary years R ((19*2 + 59)/ 7) = 6 12 days = R(12/7) = 5 total odd days = 0+1+6+5=12 R (12/7) = 5 Therefore, Friday Note:800, 1200,1600 contain 0 odd days # Jan 5, 1991 was Saturday. What day of the week was on March 3, 1992. 1991 is an ordinary year thus there will be 1 odd day jan = 31-5 = 26 feb= leap = 29 march = 3 total = 58 R(58/7) = 2 odd days = Tuesday # today is 24th August. The day of the week is Monday and it is a leap year. What will be the day of the week on this day after 3 years. 1st year = 1 odd day 2nd year = 1 odd day

3rd year = 1 odd day total = 3 odd days therefore, Thursday. # it was Thursday on 2nd jan, 1993. what day of the week will be 15th March, 1993 Jan= 31-2 = 29 Feb = 28 March = 15 Total = 72 R(72/7) = 2 odd days Thus, Saturday #The 1st republic day of India was celebrated on 26th Jan, 1950. What is the day of the week on that day. 1600= 0 odd days 300 = 1 odd day 49 = 12 leap years + 37 ordinary year = 12*2 +37 = 61 odd days = R(61/7)=5 26 days = R(26/7) = 5 thus, R[(1+5+5+)/7] = 4 odd days = Thursday # Monday Falls on 4th April, 1988. What was the day on 3rd November,1987. April = 4 March = 31 Feb = 29 Jan= 31 Dec= 31 Nov= 30-3=27 Total= 153 R(153/7) = 6 odd days 6 odd days is equivalent to Monday thus 1 odd day Tuesday NUMERICALS: # On Jan 12, 1980 it was Saturday. The day of the week on Jan, 12, 1979. [sat, sun, thurs, fri] # On July, 1985 it was a Wednesday. The day of the week on July 2, 1984 ? [wed, tues, mon, sat] # Mahatama Gandhi was born on 2nd October, 1869. The day of the week was[ Fri, thurs, sat, mon] # the year next to 1990 having the same calendar as that of 1990 is [1998, 2001, 2002, 2003] # India got independence on 15th August, 1947.
