Continuous improvement
Monash is committed to Excellence in education and strives for the highest possible quality in teaching and learning. To monitor how successful we are in providing quality teaching and learning Monash regularly seeks feedback from students, employers and staff. One of the key formal ways students have to provide feedback is through Unit Evaluation Surveys. It is Monash policy for every unit offered to be evaluated each year. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the surveys as they are an important avenue for students to have their say. The feedback is anonymous and provides the Faculty with evidence of aspects that students are satisfied and areas for improvement. Faculties have the option of administering the Unit Evaluation survey online through the my.monash portal or in class. Lecturers will inform students of the method being used for this unit towards the end of the semester. Previous Student Evaluations of this unit If you wish to view how previous students rated this unit, please go to http://www.monash.edu.au/unit-evaluation-reports/ Over the past few years the Faculty of Engineering has made a number of improvements to its units as a result of unit evaluation feedback. Some of these benefits include tutor/demonstrator training, improved objectives and better feedback mechanisms. Immediate feedback for us According to past evaluations of this unit, we have set an improvement priority for this semester. It is to make the learning outcomes clearer; to make the unit more stimulating; to improve resources and to improve the level of tutoring and feedback. Feedback is welcome at any time throughout the semester. Please use email to send it to the unit co-ordinator, or in person.

You may wish to use the open ended questions in the unit evaluation to provide written feedback on your experience of this and whether it has been helpful to you during this semester.

Teaching and Learning Method

The unit consists of lectures and practice classes with tutorials, and a design assignment. Learning in the unit is mainly done through attendance, participation in the lectures and tutorials as well as completion of the assignments prescribed. The venues for the lectures are: Monday 10am-11am CL_25/S9, Thursday 10am-11am CL_60/E6, and Friday 10am-11am CL_60/E6. Tutorials will be held at CL_37/152 on Wednesday 10am-12pm beginning from week 3. A class test will be held in week 5 on Thursday 10am-11am at CL_60/E6. Completion of this test is compulsory. Students will be required to participate in a design exercise in which they must build a model illustrating the difference between a monocoque and semi-monocoque construction of an aircraft fuselage. The evaluation will be conducted in week 7 on Wednesday 9am-12pm at CL_37/152. A second class test will be held in week 10 on Thursday 10am-11am at CL_60/E6. Completion of this test is compulsory.

Tutorial allocation (optional)

Tutorials will cover all lecture material and conducted in weeks 2-12. Students are expected to attend the tutorials. They are scheduled on Wednesday 10am-12pm at CL_37/152. Tutorial groupings will be announced when lessons commence.

Communication, participation and feedback

Monash aims to provide a learning environment in which students receive a range of ongoing feedback throughout their studies. In this unit it will take the form of group feedback via practice classes, individual feedback, peer feedback, self-comparison, verbal and written feedback, discussions in class, as well as more formal feedback related to assignment marks and grades. Students/You are encouraged to draw on a variety of feedback to enhance their/your learning.

The unit coordinator reserves the right to moderate the assessments given by the individual tutors. This process will occur at the end of the semester. To achieve a pass in the unit students must achieve an overall mark of 50% (or 45 if eligible for a Near Pass grade) with a minimum mark of 50% for the project and 40% on the examination. (Note: These two minimum marks together will not achieve a clear pass. A mark below the project and/or examination minimum will result in the lower fail percentage being returned)

Assessment details and criteria

Assessment Task 1: Practice classes

MAE3407 Aircraft Structures II Unit Guide

Details of task: Students will be presented with a set of practice questions at each tutorial session. These questions are to be completed with the help of tutors in the session and submitted before the end of the session. The assessment will be marked and returned to the student at the next tutorial session. Criteria for Assessment task: This practice questions evaluate the progress of students in keeping up with lecture materials and will be graded according to correctness of the answers given. Requirements Grades will only be given to answers handed in during tutorials (which is compulsory). Students who are unable to attend the tutorial for a valid reason must hand in the answers before the end of the week (Friday) together with a letter explaining absence to the mailbox of the lecturer in order to have them graded. Due Date: During each tutorial or on the Friday of each week (only for absence with a valid reason). Assessment Task 2: Class Test Details of task: Class test of lecture material covered until week 5. Criteria for Assessment task: This test will evaluate the progress of students in keeping up with lecture materials. The test will be a multiple-choice type. The purpose is to ensure that key concepts are well understood. Requirement The test will be conducted during a lecture. No lecture material will be permitted. Students will be expected to bring calculators for the test. Test Date: Thursday, week 5. Assessment Task 3: Design assignment Details of task: Students in a group with no more than 2 members will be presented with a structural design problem in which they have to physically construct two structures resembling the fuselage of an aircraft with the following conditions: 1) One structure should indicate a monocoque while the other a semi-monocoque construction. Both are to be made using paper. 2) The diameter and length of each structure must both be 200mm. 3) It must be demonstrated that one structure is clearly stronger than the other. 4) Each group will be required to provide a one page report prior to testing with the following included: a) names of members, b) picture of final designs, c) short description of the designed structures. Criteria for Assessment task: Marks will be given for successful completion of exercise (70%) and the report (30%). Requirement Students will be expected to design and construct the model without help. Test Date: Wednesday week 7. Assessment Task 4: Class Test Details of task: Class test of lecture material covered until week 10.
