No Yard Signs
But Ive got buttons, if you want one!

The rst U.S. presidential election of 1788-1789 was pretty much a foregone conclusion in favor of George Washington, who apparently didnt really want the job, but was persuaded that it was in the best interest of the country. The federal archives for the U.S. Electoral College says, For all intents and purposes, Washington was unopposed for election as President. I guess Washington didnt have a real big campaign. The rst truly contested presidential campaign was 1800. That didnt take long, did it? According to John Ferling in his book Adams vs. Jefferson, it was a real nasty one, too. Campaigning is part of our political system, though I wish it would stick to facts instead of turning into a mudslinging contest. Built into our Constitution by those founding mudslingers is a crucial element of our society: freedom of expression. Freedom of speech, especially political speech, has been tested time and time again by our Supreme Court and has consistently been upheld and even enhanced. This article is a good example of that freedom. There is no incumbent for the seat Im running for. The incumbent always has the advantage of name and face recognition, having been present in all sorts of public functions and getting grip-and-grin pictures in celebrations of this public gure or that one. The incumbent usually advertises, too, but thats a two-edged sword. Sometimes touting accomplishments makes visible not only what theyve done, but what they havent done, or did that constituents didnt want done. If everyone agreed on all aspects of government, we wouldnt need elections. Since thats never going to happen, the way we change things is by getting our elected ofcials to legislate according to our interests. Failing that, we try to elect new people to represent us. A nonincumbent candidate doesnt have the name and face recognition, so the only way to let voters know what the candidate stands for and wants to accomplish is through political advertising. Yard signs are ne, but I didnt get any. Ive got some posters displayed in businesses around town so that people can associate my name with my face. A lot of people see me supporting community events and trying to get the word out about Our Little Town and the good people we have here. I said last week that as a citizen of and business owner in Warrenton, I want to see the whole community involved in returning the town to an active, busy, fun place to live and work. Ive talked to a lot of people since announcing my candidacy, and I know that we share common concerns about the community, and I also know that we can all work together to solve those problems. I moved to Warrenton with some preconceived notions about the town. Almost ten years ago, I brought with me an outsider's objective view, but, as with some books, you have to read them a couple of times to really understand them. My notions later proved to be not quite aligned with reality, mostly related to tolerance for your neighbor at a variety of levels. Sometimes that outsiders view can be a valuable tool. We need to renew interest in Warrenton by engaging everyone in the community to the benet of the community. We also have to listen to all of our community, young and old, hear what they want, and move the council to make it happen in the best way possible for all concerned. Of course there are budget constraints, but we must always insure that the available funds are used fairly and equitably. I hope to enable and make public data analysis techniques to help put resources where they're best justied. To that end, I also hope for your favorable opinion at the polls! With respect, Michael
