Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder, balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1) Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A) Procedure: To determined the amount of aluminum atoms present in one teaspoon of Aluminum powder we had to perform some calculations and some procedures. The first thing we did was mass the teaspoon. After we massed the teaspoon we added the aluminum powder and re-massed it. Lastly we subtracted the Aluminum powder with the teaspoon mass from the teaspoon's mass and found our Aluminum mass. Calculations: Once we had our Aluminum mass/ 1teaspoon ratio we used that along with the molar mass of Aluminum and Avogadro's number to find the amount of Aluminum atoms present in 1 teaspoon of Aluminum powder. B) Data Gathered Mass of Teaspoon Mass of teaspoon and Mass of Aluminum powder Qualitative Observations Aluminum powder 2.10 grams 5.47 grams 5.47g-2.10g=3.37g Aluminum powder is sooty grey, and is a solid.

C) Concluding Statement: In one teaspoon of Aluminum powder there is 7.52*10^22 atoms. __________________________________________________________

1) Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A) Procedure: To determine the about teaspoons needed to fill one 1.00 mole of Iron powder we had to perform several calculations and some procedures. The first thing we did was mass the teaspoon. After, we added the Iron powder and re-massed. Lastly we subtracted the Iron powder mass with the teaspoon from the teaspoon's mass to find the mass of the Iron powder. Calculations: Once we had our Iron powder teaspoon ratio we used that along with Iron's molar mass to find the Iron mole teaspoon ration. Next we divided one mole, by the amount of moles per to get the amount of teaspoons needed which is 9.00 teaspoons. Lastly we checked multiplied 1 teaspoon by 9.00, and 0.111 moles Iron by 9 to make sure that our answer was correct. B) Data Gathered Mass of the teaspoon 2.100 grams

Mass of the Iron powder with the teaspoon 8.324 grams

Mass of the Iron powder 8.324g-2.100g=6.224g

Qualitative Observations The Iron powder is grayish black, and harder than the aluminum.

C)

Concluding Statement:___9 level teaspoons are needed to fill one mole of Iron powder. _____________________________________________________________ 2) Determine how many atoms of Zinc are present in 2.00cm^2 piece of zinc metal. A) Procedure: To determined the amount of Zinc atoms present in 2.00cm^2 piece of Zinc metal we had to perform some calculations and some procedures. The first thing we did mass the zinc. Next we measured the piece of zinc. Calculations: We used ours zinc's mass for a 3 by 3 piece of zinc metal and the it's molar mass along with Avogadro's number and the 2.00cm piece of zinc metal to find the amount of atoms present in 2.00^2 piece if zinc metal. B) Data Gathered Mass of the Zinc 1.023 grams

Measurement of the Zinc 3.12 by 3.12

Qualitative Observations The Zinc is silver colored shiny and malleable.

C)

Concluding Statement:__There are 2.10*10^20 atoms of zinc. Per 2.00cm^2cm Zinc. ____________________________________________________________ 3) Assuming that baby oil is C23H48, Determine the volume of baby oil that would provide 6.02 x 1023 molecules of oil A. Procedure: To determined the amount of aluminum atoms present in one teaspoon of Aluminum powder we had to perform some calculations and some procedures. First we grabbed a graduated cylinder and massed it. Then we added about 1.00 ml of baby oil and re- massed. Lastly we subtracted the graduated cylinder with the baby oil mass from the graduated cylinder's mass to find the 1.00ml of baby oil mass, which was 1.63 grams. Calculations: We used the baby's oil molar mass, the mass of the 1 ml of baby oil, along with Avogadro's number to find the volume of baby oil that would provide 6.00 *10^23. B) Data Gathered Mass of the Graduated Cylinder 53.91 grams C. Mass of the Graduated cylinder and mass 55.54grams Mass of the 1ml of Baby Oil Qualitative Obervations 55.54g-53.91g=1.63g The oil is clear, slick and really oily.

Concluding Statement:__The volume of Baby Oil needed to provide 6.02 *10^23__is 199ml. ____________________________________________________________ 4) Determine what length of copper wire needed to provide 2.00 mol of copper.

A) Procedure: To determine the length of copper need to provide 2.00 mole of copper we had to perform some calculations and some procedures. The first thing we did was mass the copper wire. Next we measured the length of the copper wire. Calculations: We used Copper's molar mass along with Avogadro's number and 2.00 mole of copper to find the length of copper wire need to provide 2.00mole of copper. B) Data Gathered Mass of the Copper 2.496

Length of Copper 13cm

Qualitative Observations The Copper wire is malleable, brown, and hard.

C)

Concluding Statement:__The length of the copper wire needed to provide 2 mole of copper _______is 662 cm. _______________________________________________________
