Introduction.
Today, project managers play a key role in launching new products and managing for success. As leaders in the industry, project managers create projects & orchestrate carefully designed action plans to complete projects successfully, often incorporating complex, dynamic & changing requirements. Definition of Project Management According to "A Guide to the Project Management Body of knowledge, PMI, Third edition, Project Management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to a broad range of activities in order to meet the requirements of a particular project". Project management is the discipline of planning, organizing, and managing resources to deliver all the work required to complete a project within defined scope, time and cost constraints. Project Management is a continuing set of process improvement initiatives. We have gained much in a short space of time. From the industrial revolution & improvements in delivering goods and services to the early days of the 1950's, when project management software ran on mainframes, to the sophisticated software of today that can show managers instantly where they are in a project. Although the tools and the methods may have changed and continue to evolve, the key components of project management remains constant. Although the diagram depicts project management phases as separate entities, in reality most projects will traverse back and forth between phases several times throughout the course of the project. As shown on the diagram, projects frequently revisit the planning phase as they execute and control the project. Each project phase is defined as follows 1. Project inititation.Project initiation activities occur before the project actually begins and answers the questions why, what and how. Why the project needs to occur, what the project will produce and how the desired product will be developed. At this point in the project life cycle, the product and the project work to produce the product are typically still very high level concepts or Strategies. The details of the work to be performed are still to be defined. 2. Project planning. Project planning activities translate the high level concepts defined during project initiation in to product requirements that in turn establish the scope of the project. Once the scope is defined, project planners develop the project schedule and estimate project cost. Project planning also involves defining the project organization and communication structures and developing the management processes that will be used throughout the project. 3. Project Execution. Project Execution involves coordinating and authorizing people or other resources to carry out the plan. 4. Project Monitoring & control . Project monitoring and control involves ensuring the project objectives are met by the monitoring and measuring progress against the plan and taking corrective action when needed. The sooner problems or variances from the plan are detected the easier it is to take corrective action. Therefore it is better to provide early warning of potential problems than to wait until the problems have grown to the point that corrective action is difficult or even impossible. Open, honest and early communications between project team members, project manager and the stake holders are the key ingredient of all successful projects.
