Prayer for Ash Wednesday

By: Education for Justice Jesus invites us to walk with him during Lent, meeting and being present with the humble and poor. Let us walk his way with joy. Jesus beckons us to a way of risk, letting go of our security.

Let us walk his way with joy. Jesus challenges us to listen to the voices of those who have nothing to lose. Let us walk his way with joy. Jesus points us to a way of self-giving, where power and status are overturned. Let us walk his way with joy. Jesus calls us to follow the way of the cross, where despair is transformed by the promise of new life. Let us walk his way with joy. (EFJ, 2013, p.1)

Prayer/Reflection/Action:

Blessing and Giving of Ashes We pray that our Holy God will bless these ashes + Which will be used to remind us to open our hearts to the Spirit of Jesus. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water. Ministers come forward to receive their ashes as Presider says to each: Turn your heart to God. All come forward to receive their ashes (Liturgy Ritual Prayer, 2013, p.2).

Dismissal:

Joel 2:12-14 (Beliefnet, n.d.) Yet even now, says the Lord, Return to me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; Rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain-offering and a drink-offering for the Lord, your God? Mark 1:12-15 (Beliefnet, n.d.) And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the Good News."
