For those who prefer a stay closer to the wines, the “Vineyard Suite”
is a spacious studio/one bedroom suite located directly above the
Berardo Winery and Tasting Room. There is a granite kitchenette and
private patio with barbecue. Also, “The Cottage” is a large one
bedroom, one bath home that has a full kitchen and offers a private
patio with barbecue.
Both the Cottage and Vineyard Suite offer sweeping vineyard views
for an authentic wine country experience. And for less than $200 per
night, they truly are a great value for your wine country getaway.
What’s next for the couple now that the B&B is complete?
As for history, the “Ranch House” is an 1880s ranch house origi-
nally built by the Mennonite settlers who once lived on the property.
Now that the Berardos have moved into the Villa, the ranch house is
under renovation as a 2 bedroom – 2 bath home that will also be avail-
able as a vacation rental.
“Well, we’ve got the pool and Jacuzzi there overlooking the vine-
yards, and we’re going to add a fireplace, Santa Maria style barbecue
and a brick oven for making pizzas,” said John as he looked out over
the property. “Four years ago we planted an olive grove, with Tuscan
Blend olives so in two years, we’ll be making our own estate olive oils
along with our Italian varietal wines. Also, I will be planting a couple
more Italian varietals to add to the existing Italian ones, but I don’t
want to make more than 2,000 cases. I want to be able to keep it
personal – a small, family-run estate winery like you would find in the
Italian countryside.”
For more information about Berardo Vineyards and Winery,
Villa San Giovanni, the Cottage and the Vineyard Suite, visit the
website, www.BerardoVineyardsandWinery.com or call (805) 239-

weekends and holidays at 3280 Township Road in Paso Robles.

PREFERRED RESTAURANTS
M A M A’S M E AT BA L L
One pretty reliable way to find out
just how good the food at a local
restaurant is, is to ask somebody in
the restaurant business. Ask a
bartender, a waiter, anyone in fact,
what they think of Mama’s meatballs
in San Luis Obispo and their lips
begin to quiver, their eyes roll towards
the heavens, they sigh; that is how
good Mama’s Meatball is.
Set in a small courtyard off of one of the town’s main streets, in a
place called the Old Creamery, Mama’s Meatball is actually divided in
two. On the right is the take-out where people line up to get their
orders of meatballs and more. To the left, fronted by a huge-trunked
tree and a water fountain, is the intimate restaurant with it’s mural of
the Mediterranean across the back.
Meatballs aside, the restaurant, under owner and chef Nicola Alle-
gretta, offers a wide range of authentic Italian dishes, many of them
now available in smaller sizes as well, a bow to the economy and his
customer’s wishes. Among them are half a dozen soups, a long list of salads (including grilled salmon
and a refreshing pear and gorgonzola), some wonderful antipasto choices, both hot and cold paninis
(including, of course, one made with meatballs), more pasta dishes than there is space here to share
(though the Ravioli di Pollo all Vodka – homemade ravioli filled with chicken and served in a vodka
sauce – cannot go unmentioned).
There is also a heady selection of meat and fish dishes as well as any number of traditional and
specialty pizzas (now available in two sizes) and some far too-tempting desserts.
Mama’s Meatball is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day
except Sunday. They are located in the Old Creamery plaza at 570
