This information applies to the FTB-400 Universal Test System and all FTB-400 module user guides. Modification of Slot Identification System
For ToolBox 6 versions 6.7 and higher, the slot identification system for your seven-slot backplane was modified. Now, instead of letters A through G, the slots are identified by the numbers 0 through 6. Hence, you might notice this modificaction in various locations, namely the title bar and Integrated Applications function tab. The diagram below illustrates your seven-slot backplane, comparing the old identification system with the new.

Introducing ToolBox 6
The new ToolBox 6 uses the Windows 2000 operating system to provide you with a graphic, user-friendly interface for your testing applications.
The interface features were designed to be efficient and easy to access, whether you are using the touchscreen or a conventional mouse and keyboard.
Multitasking Possibilities
ToolBox 6 brings new possibilities to field testing: multitasking. It is now possible to perform different tests and work on tests results all at the same time, switching between applications simply by touching a button (see Hardware Buttons on page 4 for more details). Multitasking will undoubtedly save you time, as you do not have to wait for one application to be done before starting or using another.
11
Multiple-Module Applications
ToolBox 6 allows you to run applications requiring the combination of several modules. Simply set the combination of modules to use, and launch the application.
Expandable Memory
The FTB-400 Universal Test System is equipped with a fast processor, and plenty of RAM allowing you to use the many features of ToolBox 6. However, as your testing needs grow and technology evolves, you might need more than that. That is why we have already looked into the future, and made it possible to expand the memory in your unit. Contact EXFO if you need to expand your memory needs.

a cold shutdown, which will allow the FTB-400 to perform a complete
restart routine the next time is it used. This shutdown cuts power completely to the test modules and platform. To perform a warm shutdown when the FTB-400 is turned on, hold down the On/Off button for two seconds. Release the button immediately after the beep. The FTB-400 shuts down. A warm shutdown ensures that all currently running applications will close and that the next time you turn the FTB-400 on, it will start more rapidly. To perform a cold shutdown when the FTB-400 is turned on, hold down the On/Off button for five seconds. The FTB-400 shuts down. This cuts the power from the FTB-400 and its modules. After a cold shutdown, it will take approximately two minutes longer than after a warm shutdown to turn on the FTB-400.

Cleaning Fixed Connectors
IMPORTANT
Alcohol may leave traces if used abundantly. Avoid contact between the tip of the bottle and the wiping cloth, and do not use bottles that distribute too much alcohol at a time. 3. Gently wipe the connector threads three times with the folded and moistened section of the wiping cloth.
IMPORTANT
Isopropyl alcohol takes approximately ten seconds to evaporate. Since isopropyl alcohol is not absolutely pure, evaporation will leave microscopic residue. Make sure you dry the surfaces before evaporation occurs. 4. With a dry lint-free wiping cloth, gently wipe the same surfaces three times with a rotating movement. 5. Throw out the wiping cloths after one use. 6. Moisten a cleaning tip (2.5 mm tip) provided by EXFO with only one drop of isopropyl alcohol.

Maintenance
Replacing the Batteries
The FTB-400 comes with two nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries in the two-slot configuration or four NiMH batteries in the seven-slot configuration. Having extra batteries on hand allows you to extend the operating time of the FTB-400 when the primary batteries runs low. You can switch from battery power to the AC/DC adapter/charger or vice versa without turning off the FTB-400 or losing data. When the FTB-400 is plugged in a power outlet but turned off, all the incoming power goes to recharging the batteries as fast as possible. When the FTB-400 is turned on, the test modules power requirements come first. Therefore, battery charging time is directly dependant upon the use you make of your FTB-400. The FTB-400 can charge one battery at a time when equipped with a two-slot receptacle and two batteries at a time (one in the mainframe and one in the receptacle) when equipped with a seven-slot receptacle.
