Thomson Chemistry Period 5 17 October 2013 High School Energy Forum Script: Recommendations The governmental organization, the senate, has expressed the concern that there should be more regulations. Moreover, what they really want is the data/records of fracking to be public, such as all the chemicals used etc. We at Chevron believe that this concern is already taken care of because we have been taking action towards this concern. Chevron has put effort to improve peoples access to this information. For those who didnt know 99% of the material that is used for hydraulic fracturing is water and sand. Only 1% are chemicals, which isnt much compared to the other 99%. That 1% makes fracking efficient and productive. Plus, there is no need to be alarmed because most of these chemicals can be found in your food and beverages, this reduces the chance of you being in danger or have fracking be a hazard to you. In addition, all the chemicals are published in fracfocus.org, where you can find all of the information about chemicals used in hydraulic fracking and more. Moreover, as quoted on our website Public confidence in our operations is essential to our success. We want you to confide in us because as Chevron our main concern is the community and we are here to help you. The environmental organization EPA (U.S Environmental Protection Agency) has expressed the concern that hydraulic fracking will hurt the environment, people, and the water. However, we at Chevron believe that the people and the EPA shouldnt concern themselves so much on this topic. Our main priorities are keeping people safe, protecting the environment and the water, those are our core values. We manage all fracking fluids, wastewater, and produced

Gonzalez 2 water efficiently, safely and responsibly. All of this water that is let out into the atmosphere after the process which is stored temporarily in lined pits or steel tanks. This water is later either reused in future fracking jobs or injected in disposal wells. These disposal wells are permitted and regulated for this specific purpose. We are trying to reuse 100% of the wastewater which helps reduce the amount of fresh water we use leaving the water for other purposes. Plus, it reduces our need for trucks to drop of water and dispose of it, helping the environment. Chevron says, We maintain at least a 100-foot buffer zone between our wells and fresh water rivers, streams or wetlands. In order to protect our environment when hydraulic fracking is taking place we use wells that have a tol of 8 layers of steel casing and cement. The possibilities of having gas leaks are extremely low because this process is conducted thousands of feet below the ground. Moreover, a test proved that the fracturing occurs more than a mile away of rock to the groundwater. We are prepared for any unexpected incident or emergency, we are here to protect you and the environment. At Chevron if we cant do it right then we wont do it at all. Angie (Chevron employee) According to hydraulic fracturing, including the study conducted by Chevron, says that with the gas that the process of hydraulic fracturing to be complete is two years but the gas that is provided from that well is for 50 years. We recommend that we dont regulate fracking too much. If fracking gets regulated too much we wont be able to improve and produce as much gas for our environment. We dont have to rely on other countries to get our gas when we can do it ourselves. This can provide a lot of energy for our country. With regulations that go too far hydraulic fracturing wont be able to advance. You might say that we need regulations to keep everyone safe but with or without regulations thats our main goal to keep people and the environment safe. According on studies on hydraulic fracturing my sources tell me that Chevron

Gonzalez 3 has spent millions of dollars on research of hydraulic fracturing , we only want to improve it and make it better so it might not hurt the environment. Water reuse has reduced our fresh water consumption. Today, approximately 60 percent of the water we use to fracture wells is fresh water. We are researching ways to further reduce fresh water, such as the possibility of using water that is non-potable, or unsafe for drinking. We recommend that only companies that help improve fracking should be able to use the process of hydraulic fracturing themselves.
