Interview guideline- Ministry of Tourism, Mr. Lotok, planning department This interview is being conducted in the course of my diploma thesis with the title Mass tourism versus Community Based Tourism in Indonesia. The aim of the research is to find out whether Community Based Tourism in Indonesia can be seen as a sustainable alternative to mass tourism. In this interview I would like to focus on the role of the Ministry of Tourism in the process of sustainable development of tourism in Indonesia. 1.) Can you please explain shortly what your role in the Ministry of Tourism is and how long youve been working here. Destinations & planning 2.) What are the strengths or potentials that Indonesia has as a tourist destination? What are the weaknesses? 3.) What is the general strategy of the national tourism planning? 4.) How are plans (e.g. the Strategic Plan) implemented and assessed? 5.) What role does domestic and international tourism play for the country? 6.) Bali is important for international tourism. Out of all the islands in Indonesia why is it Bali and why not other islands as well? 7.) What are the biggest negative impacts of tourism in Bali? 8.) How can those problems be solved? 9.) What are positive impacts of tourism in Bali? 10.) Are there plans to make other destinations also more attractive for international tourists? 11.) What role does tourism play in terms of poverty alleviation in the country? 12.) Would you say that tourism is a good tool for helping to develop the country? Why? Why not? 13.) Are there any areas in Indonesia where tourism would be a threat to the community? (e.g. native tribes) Sustainable tourism 14.) How would you define sustainable tourism? 15.) What are challenges that Indonesia faces in terms of the implementation of sustainable tourism? 16.) What are examples of forms of tourism where the local community has been included in the decision making process? 17.) Can sustainable tourism projects also be implemented in a mass tourism destination like Bali? 18.) What strategies are there to raise awareness for sustainable tourism among all stakeholders? 19.) According to the SWOT Analysis for Sustainable Tourism in Indonesia in the Strategic Plan, leakage is named as one of the main weaknesses. a. Would you say that this is still true?
