2-3 IP Classification Codes
A simple explanation of the IP rating system is written below. Please refer to more specialized information
material if you wish to know more.
International Standard IEC 60529 outlines an international classification system that describes the sealing
characteristics of electrical equipment. The classification system defines the level of protection provided by
enclosures to prevent the ingress of foreign objects and moisture into the electrical equipment.
The classification system uses the IP code, or Ingress Protection code, to define the level of seal.
An IP number contains two numbers (i.e. IP67) in most instances which relate to the level of protection
provided by an enclosure or housing. Either number may be shown as X (i.e. IPX6 / IP7X) to indicate the
X part is not tested.

, the
IC-F5061/F5063 series provides 6.25kHz digital narrow mode communication, and increases
efficiency of channel allocation and use of spectrum.
The IC-F5061/F5063 series provides 2 optional slots: one optional slot for the UT-126H digital unit
and one for another option board.
*This option may not be available in some countries. Please ask your dealer for details.
Other methods were also considered, including ACSB
and the proposed APCO Project 25 Phase II CQPSK.
However, both required a more expensive linear
amplifier in the transmitter and neither is compatible
with existing analog FM hardware.
Instead, 4LFSK modulation was selected using FDMA
for transmission. This method has a number of
advantages:
better communication range
simpler design
easy to maintain and service
lower cost for business and industry customers
compatible with existing FM radio hardware
Background Background Background Background
As existing spectrum becomes increasingly scarce, the
demand for more options grows. The FCC essentially
created additional spectrum by adding hundreds of new
licenses with 6.25 kHz bandwidth. To take advantage of
this opportunity, Icom and Kenwood entered into a joint
agreement to develop 6.25 kHz technology. This
technology is a new digital communications protocol that
provides quality voice and data, and is designed as a
non-proprietary protocol. It accomplishes this by using
4LFSK (4-Level Frequency Shift Keying) and FDMA
(Frequency Division Multiple Access).
History History History History
This technology was developed in response to an FCC
9
Icoms first radio with this technology is the
F3061/F4061. To enable backwards compatibility, the
radio is both analog and digital and also works in 25 kHz
and 12.5 kHz channel bandwidths (conventional and
LTR trunked operation in analog mode).
This new digital protocol, NXDN (Next Generation
Digital Narrowband) has been registered as a trademark
by Icom Inc. and Kenwood Corporation. The IDAS (Icom
Digital Advanced System) is the system based on this
NXDN technology.
The product range is steadily expanding , from Handheld
Transceivers to Mobile Transceivers to Repeaters. All
products are/will be available for VHF and UHF bands.
This technology was developed in response to an FCC
revision of the rules concerning transmitters in the
150MHz to 174MHz and 421MHz to 512MHz range. To
receive FCC certification after January 1
st
2005,
transmitters must have proved compliant as a multi-
mode device. This requirement could be achieved by
using 6.25 kHz channel bandwidth. In addition to the
FCC requirement, Europe and Japan are also moving
toward 6.25 kHz technologies. Because some in the
industry believed that this requirement could not be met
by 2005, the FCC suspended this requirement. (A new
deadline of January 1
st
2011 has been set.)
Icom, however, went ahead to meet this requirement. It
was impossible to do using analog technology, so it
became necessary to develop a new digital protocol.
6.25 kHz FDMA Technology
Icoms has implemented this technology in the
F5061/F5063 series. Backwards compatibility to
analog only radios enables a planned migration path to
digital with existing radios operating analog only and
new radios operating analog and digital.

they will have to migrate to 12.5 kHz bandwidth by

because of any incentive to do so.

Modulation with 4LFSK uses a symbol mapping scheme.
When the radio receives a binary number, that number
is mapped to a symbol, which is interpreted as a
1050Hz frequency deviation.
The deviation is detected, filtered and unmapped as a
binary signal for transmission.
Range Range Range Range
Audio quality over distance is also greatly improved with
Icoms 6.25 kHz technology. Instead of the early
degradation of audio that you see in an analog signal,
the 6.25 kHz digital audio quality remains higher over a
comparable distance.
A channel is defined by the deviation either side of the
center line frequency. Migrating from a 25 kHz channel
to a 12.5 kHz channel on the same centerline frequency
is a 1-for-1 move. There is no increase in the capacity to
load radio users.
There are 500 new 6.25 kHz frequencies (VHF and UHF)
available now. Most are unused because no 6.25 kHz
radios were available. With Icoms FDMA technology,
frequency coordinators have total flexibility to either
assign a 6.25 kHz channel within an existing 25 kHz or
12.5 kHz channel or as a stand-alone frequency some
where else on the band. Frequency coordinator will
coordinate channels for minimum adjacent channel
interference.

Because the emission mask is tight, 6.25 kHz channels can be used next to each other without causing
interference. The bandwidth measurements below show the 6.25kHz FDMA signal meets the FCC designated
emission mask requirements.
The figure on the left is the emission mask for a 6.25 kHz channel. The Icom 6.25kHz FDMA signal clearly
operates within the mask. Accordingly, the FCC certified the F3061/4061 as the first ever 6.25 kHz radio.
The figure on the right is the emission mask for a 12.5 kHz channel. With a 12.5 kHz channel, you can create
two offset 6.25 kHz channels.

6.25 kHz FDMA makes twice the number of channels available within the same spectrum as shown below. This
is a real solution to meet expanding demand for spectrum every year.

Both 2-for-1 and 4-for-1 efficiencies may be realized by
splitting existing channels. Using 6.25 kHz channels
offset from the center of a 25 kHz channel, it is possible
to fit four 6.25 kHz channels into the 25 kHz bandwidth.
To do this, a waiver from the FCC is required*. Using this
scheme, the four frequencies are now offset 3.125 kHz
from the original 25 kHz channel center frequency.

If you start at the center frequency, you can license 5
each 6.25 kHz frequencies underlying a 25 kHz channel.
The 2 outer frequencies are out of the 25 kHz channel
width. This provides license holders with a hedge
against losing that spectrum in 2013 when they will be
forced to 12.5 kHz.

Future Applications for 6.25kHz Technology Future Applications for 6.25kHz Technology Future Applications for 6.25kHz Technology Future Applications for 6.25kHz Technology
This new digital land mobile technology can be a
platform for future integration of IT/IP/VOIP
technologies. To this end, there are some initiatives
between a number of manufacturers to promote
6.25kHz technology more widely. An example is the
formation of the dPMR MoU in Europe, and the FCC in
the U.S.A. has recently proposed that system owners
consider switching to 6.25kHz technology where
possible. Japan and China are also considering
6.25kHz for future digital radio standards.

VHF Considerations* VHF Considerations* VHF Considerations* VHF Considerations*
VHF offers even more opportunities due to its original
30 kHz channel width plan. When the FCC moved to 25
kHz and then 12.5 kHz an overlap was created requiring
geographical separation between two contiguous
channels. For example, 3 contiguous could not be used
at the same location.
13
In this example, a gateway to the internet is attached
to each repeater. This enables networks to be built
using the internet as part of the infrastructure.

at the same location.
The VHF narrowband plan is 7.5 kHz channels, which
has eliminated the geographical separation
requirement. Tests have proven the Icom 6.25 kHz
signal can be used within a 7.5 kHz channel with no
interference to the adjacent channel.
Split a 25 kHz or 12.5 kHz Channel Split a 25 kHz or 12.5 kHz Channel Split a 25 kHz or 12.5 kHz Channel Split a 25 kHz or 12.5 kHz Channel
This is similar to the UHF application. With a 12.5 or 25
kHz channel, you can create two or four offset 6.25 kHz
channels. This may require a waiver from the FCC.
One 25 kHz Channel to Three 6.25 kHz Channels One 25 kHz Channel to Three 6.25 kHz Channels One 25 kHz Channel to Three 6.25 kHz Channels One 25 kHz Channel to Three 6.25 kHz Channels
A single 25 kHz channel can be converted to three 6.25
kHz channels, each operating within a 7.5 kHz channel.

3-4 Mobile Radio Installation
POSITION POSITION POSITION POSITION
Checklist of points to decide before starting:
1) Is there a suitable position to mount the radio?
2) Will you use a fist mic or a hands-free
installation?
3) Can you route all cables so that they will not
interfere with any controls of the vehicle? Fist mic
cables are especially important here.
4) Make sure that it is possible to securely mount the
radio.
5) Will the position of the radio be quite safe for you
and your passengers?
ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA ANTENNA
Many types and sizes of antennas are available,
whatever you choose you need to consider some basic
points :

6) Will the position of the radio obstruct any safety
device of the vehicle?
7) Dont forget that transceivers can become quite hot
in transmit mode, the ventilation should not be
obstructed.
8) Dont mount the transceiver, antenna or
accessories where they can obstruct the drivers
view.
VEHICLE VEHICLE VEHICLE VEHICLE
Some vehicles require special attention.
These notes are written for petrol/diesel engined cars,
vans etc. with 12 volt battery supplies.
Other types of vehicles may be subject to special
regulations.
If in doubt, please contact either the vehicle or radio
distributor for further information.
Be sure that the installation can be made safely, such as
no petrol leaks etc.
Modern vehicles are using more and more non-metallic
materials in their construction. Some panels (interior
and exterior) may be made from plastic or reinforced
resin etc. Such panels do not have the same shielding
properties as metal and this may cause unexpected
effects with RF such as high VSWR, RF immunity. A
qualified radio installation engineer should be able to
give you advice on suitable products that can be used to
screen such non-metallic panels if required
mounted to the vehicle and should be a sensible size.
If you choose a magnetic mount type, be sure that it is
rated for the antenna type.
CABLING CABLING CABLING CABLING
Mobile transceivers generally need a direct connection
to the vehicle battery.
You need to check where you can route the DC supply
cable and RF coaxial cables.
If there are no specific instructions for your vehicle
and/or radio then the following points should be
adhered to :
1) Keep the radio cables away from fuel or gas pipes.
2) Keep the radio cables away from any part that will
become hot.
3) Keep the radio cables clear of moving parts
(steering, suspension, throttle control, etc.)
4) Route the cables where they can be securely held in
position.
5) Check if you need to drill some holes for passing
radio cables.
6) Only attach cables to non-moving parts of the
vehicle.
Mobile Radio Installation
INSTALLATION INSTALLATION INSTALLATION INSTALLATION
Start the installation with any mechanical work that is
required for fitting the radio mount, cables, etc.
Before drilling any hole in a vehicle check exactly what is
behind the panel that you are drilling. When drilling a
hole always use a drill with a stop so that it is
impossible for the drill to go too far. Take extra care to
avoid petrol tanks and pipes, brake lines, other wiring,
etc. If you have to drill any hole to pass a cable then the
hole must be sealed with a rubber grommet and when
the cable has been passed through you should re-seal
the cable and grommet with a suitable sealant.
If you drill holes for mounting screws, be sure to check
that the screw is a suitable type and length.
Locking type screws, nuts or washers are preferred.
Pay attention to cables inside the passenger
compartment. They should be secured or routed under
carpets etc. There should be no possibility that they
could move and interfere with any control or pedal.
BATTERY CONNECTION BATTERY CONNECTION BATTERY CONNECTION BATTERY CONNECTION
Mobile transceivers are usually intended for direct
connection to the battery. Before disconnecting the
battery you need to be aware of some possible
Switch on ignition (but not engine) and check that all
instruments, warning lights etc are displaying normal
reading. Now transmit and verify that nothing changes
and that no instrument is disturbed. If the transceiver is
multi-mode, then repeat the test with all modes. If the
transceiver is multi-band, then repeat the test in all
operating bands. In each case use the maximum RF
power. If there is ANY disturbance of the vehicle
instrumentation then stop and identify the source of the
problem before continuing.
If the above tests have been completed without any
problems, you can proceed to the STATIC operational
checks.
STATIC OPERATIONALCHECKS STATIC OPERATIONALCHECKS STATIC OPERATIONALCHECKS STATIC OPERATIONALCHECKS
Start the engine of the vehicle and repeat ALL the tests
described in TESTING. Check that there is no
disturbance of the engine control or engine speed.

unintended flashing or indication occurs.
Stop the engine. If the above checks have been
completed without any problems you can proceed to the

battery you need to be aware of some possible
problems:
1) Is the vehicle fitted with an alarm that may not
operate after re-connection?
2) Is the vehicle fitted with any electronic circuit that
may malfunction after re-connection? (engine
management, traction control, braking control, etc.)
3) If in doubt do not disconnect the battery. Take the
vehicle to an authorized service agent and ask them
to connect the transceiver power cables for you.
If the DC cables are not long enough they should only be
extended using an equivalent size and type of cable and
any join must be capable of handling the specified
current and be well insulated. Always try and route
cables so that the total length is as short as possible.
Connections should be made to the battery terminal
connectors and nowhere else in the vehicle wiring room.
If the vehicle uses a different battery voltage (24 volts,
etc.) then a DC-DC convertor must be used. Never try
and connect to an intermediate point on the battery,
etc., that appears to measure 12 volts.
TESTING TESTING TESTING TESTING
Switch on transceiver and check that it functions OK.
Check the antenna matching with a VSWR meter, if
possible, adjust the antenna for a minimum value.

4-3 2-Tone (LMR) Signalling
What is 2 What is 2 What is 2 What is 2- -- -Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling?
1. Originally called Quick Call, this signalling protocol
was developed by Motorola in the 1950s.
2. 2-Tone (Quick Call) was designed to add Squelch
specificity especially for emergency service radios.
3. LMR consists of two distinct signals sent over the air
to a radio or a group.
4. Each tone can be configured within a 250 Hz and
3300 Hz tone frequency.
in the proximity of the radio. This is also very useful
in emergency cases where the user may not be able
to trigger the microphone.
5. Stun/Kill This function allows the dispatch
console to disable, temporarily or permanently, a unit
using the 2-Tone capabilities. When Stun is used,
the unit may regain its functionality by entering a
password. When Kill is used, the radio only regains
functionality by reprogramming the unit using the
cloning software.

5. Normally, the duration of the tones varies from one
(1) to three (3) seconds in length no space between
the tones. Tone lengths of up to 10 seconds are
commonly seen in existing applications.
6. ICOM radios allow variable tone periods and spaces
(no tone) between the tones.
2 22 2- -- -Tone Features Tone Features Tone Features Tone Features
1. Selective Calling allows the dispatch console to
page an individual unit. Early models only allowed 1
(one) encoding tone set per channel or up to 3
(three) receive tones in the radio. Newer ICOM radios
allows the programming of up to 10 (ten) tones that
can be used all in one channel if necessary.
2. Group Calling - allows the dispatch console to page
a group.
3. Answer Back Call Also known as Radio Check
allows the dispatch console or another portable, to
send a tone to a particular radio and when the target
radio receives the tone it answers back with another
tone. This function serves as a tool to verify if a unit
is ON and within range.
4. Auto Transmit Also known as Radio Spy allows
the dispatcher to send a 2-Tone signal to the radio
causing it to open its transmitter microphone audio
(Hot Mic) in order to listen to whatever is happening
6. Scan Start/Cancel Using 2-Tone a dispatcher can
send a signal to a radio or a group to commence the
Scan function of the radio. If used with a group of
users, this feature allows the dispatcher to regroup
everyone in a different, but common channel. This
feature is also known as Radio Regroup.

Alpha Numeric text tag to each tone for
identification at decode and encode if the unit has a
display.
2. Variable Signals This allows the user/programmer
to set the Beep and Bell to different formats for
easier identification when a signal is received.
3. Tones Assignable on a Channel by Channel Basis
The newer Icom radios allow the programmer to
enter in ten (10) tone sets, which can be used for
both encode AND decode if necessary. Each channel
has the capability to use all tones for both encode
and decode, if programmed correctly.
4. Multiple Tone Sets per Channel This also allows
the programmer to set all ten (10) tones on a single
channel if it was deemed necessary. Each channel
allows a programmer to use a combination of tones
per channel as needed.
4-4 5-Tone (PMR) Signalling
What is 5 What is 5 What is 5 What is 5- -- -Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling? Tone Signalling?
1. The 5-Tone signalling protocol consists of a fast data
burst of one (1) to seven (7) frequency tones that
can selectively signal a radio.
2. Originally a European signalling protocol, 5-Tone has
numerous formats such as:

Why chose 5 Why chose 5 Why chose 5 Why chose 5- -- -Tone? Tone? Tone? Tone?
1. 5-Tone is a non-proprietary signalling protocol that
allows the Icom radio to inter-operate with other
brands using the 5-Tone signalling.
2. This protocol also allows a mixed fleet operation.
3. It is faster than 2-Tone by employing a quick data
burst.
4. Customers are familiar with the protocol since it is an
Industry Standard in USA, Europe, and Asia.
5. Many manufacturers built dispatch consoles with this

8. As with 2-Tone, PMR also provides audible alerts,
emergency signalling and Dispatch functionality
making it a workable upgrade to an existing fleet.
9. The PMR model and radio functionality provides the
programmer with RX Text identifiers. When a
particular 5-Tone sequence is received, a radio with
display will show the alias attributed to that tone
sequence.
10.When transmitting a 5-Tone sequence, the radio can
select from a programmed list with aliases in order to
identify the code desired for TX.
11.PMR radios allow for TX code editing and the
creation of a custom User Code that will allow the
programmer to create a unique code for a customer.
12.The system also allows for a user to select the TX
codes by assigning a button on the radio.
