Germantown board keeps rifle ban for deer hunting

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Germantown Village Board approved a motion Oct. 21 to keep the ban of rifles for deer hunting in place. While the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had banned the use of rifles for deer hunting, the agency lifted that restriction for this year. Local communities can still vote to keep the ban in place. The Germantown General Government and Finance Committee previously recommended keeping the ban in place. At the start of discussion, Trustee Al Vanderheiden said the DNR did extensive research into the matter before lifting the ban. He also said hunters are required to take safety training courses. I would consider staying with the DNR regulations, Vanderheiden said. Resident Thomas Roskopf said the Conservation Congress supported lifting the ban on rifles for deer hunting in the southern part of the state. Its a proven fact that rifles are actually safer than shotguns, Roskopf said, stating the a shotgun slug can ricochet off a hard surface where a rifle slug will disintegrate. He added that majority of hunters are shooting from tree stands and are shooting into the ground as a result. Roskopf said the use of rifles has been allowed in the southwest portion of the state and there have been no reported incidents. Roskopf added that rifle use is still allowed for hunting coyotes and other animals. In response, Police Chief Peter Hoell said he is an avid hunter and has used rifles, shotguns and pistols. School district, 6 retired teachers at odds over long term care

Lawsuit filed in July, judge reviewing motions
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Six retired teachers from the Germantown School District are squaring off against their former employers in Washington County Circuit Court over the decision by the district to drop the long term care coverage offered through Wisconsin Education Association (WEA) Trust. The lawsuit was filed in Washington County Circuit Court July 16 by attorneys Randall R. Garczynski and Stephen Pieroni. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit are Roger Choinsky, Gary Finn, William Gay, David Kliss, Carol Rudebeck and Janice Weinhold. According to the lawsuit, the defendants participated in a group long term care (LTC) coverage that was offered through the WEA Trust. The LTC group policy with the WEA Trust had unique benefits unavailable from other LTC insurance programs in the general market place, the lawsuit stated. According to the lawsuit, the policy provided coverage for a district employee and spouse for one premium, did not require any underwriting by the employee and had a paid in full component, after which making payments for 360 months the policy was paid in full and did not require any more premium payments. The paid in full element made the group LTC policy uniquely affordable to plaintiffs as the policy would be paid for later in their lives when traditional non-group LTC policy premiums would rise to the level of being unaffordable for most individuals, the lawsuit states. On March 30, 2012, the School Board dropped LTC coverage for district teaching and professional staff. The lawsuit alleges that the district and School Board should have known that by discontinuing coverage in the group LTC for the active employees that it violated the underwriting agreement with the WEA Trust such that plaintiffs and the members of the class would lose group LTC coverage, the lawsuit states. Under the WEA Trust policy, after it was terminated individuals could have bought out the remainder of the group policy for certain amounts or convert to an individual policy. The lawsuit states that premiums under individual policies were higher than the group policy and further states that three of the plaintiffs were not able to mitigate damages with the buy out option or afford the increased premiums for higher policies. The lawsuit alleges the district committed a breach of contract by dropping the WEA Trust LTC provision. The districts insurance carrier, Wausau Insurance filed a motion requesting a ruling that the company has no obligation to defend the district because the companys policy with the district excludes contractual liability and breach of contract. In its response, attorneys for Germantown sought to have the lawsuit dismissed and have said that the WEA Trust should be a party to the lawsuit. Here, WEA Trusts role is so intertwined with the claims and defenses provided by the parties that this case cannot logically move forward without the WEA Trust, attorney Sarrie L. Devore said in a response. WEA Trust was the only party who affirmatively acted in eliminating the group insurance to which retirees of the district could elect to be subject after retirement. This decision was not made by the defendants (Germantown School District). Devores response states that the policy gave WEA Trust the option not the requirement to eliminate the group plan for all group members under certain circumstances and that the School Board chose to eliminate long term coverage only for active employees. Last week the district issued the following statement from School Board President Robert Soderberg: The case between several retired teachers from the Germantown School District and the District is still in the initial stage. In response to the complaint filed by the retired teachers, the District filed a Motion to Dismiss. Both parties submitted written briefs on the Districts Motion to Dismiss and Judge (James) Pouros is currently reviewing the motion. It is anticipated that Judge Pouros will make his determination on the Districts motion on the written submissions alone and a hearing will not be held. Judge Pouros has not provided the parties with a timeline for his decision.

Richfield administrator selected for county post

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Village of Richfield Administrator Joshua Schoemann was selected as the new Washington County manager by the County Board Oct. 22. Schoemann will replace Doug Johnson, who currently holds the title of county coordinator. Schoemann will begin his duties Jan.1. The County Board approved the appointment 23-0, with Supervisor Michael Bassill abstaining. Prior to the vote, Bassill indicated he preferred a county executive form of government, in which the executive leader of the county is elected by all residents. Schoemann has been village of Richfield administrator since April 2010. He previously served as city administrator for Princeton, Wis., and assistant to the public works director in Elgin, Ill. He received his undergraduate degree from UW-Whitewater and his Masters Degree in public administration from Northern Illinois University. He served in the National Guard from 2000-08. First of all, let me take the opportunity to thank God for the ability and the talent that he has given me to serve in Washington County, Schoemann said right after he was appointed to the position. He also thanked his wife for her support, the Executive Committee for their confidence in selecting him for the post and the County Board for the nomination. He also thanked the Richfield Village Board and the management team that has been created there. Ive said from the very beginning of this process that the Lord is going to put me wherever Im supposed to be, and I strongly believe that. Im pleased that this is the spot, and I look forward to the chance to prove that all to you, Schoemann said. He said the selection is the start and that it will take time to establish credibility to move forward. Respect isnt something you just get by virtue of a title, its something that you earn. I look forward to the coming months and years where I have the opportunity to do that, Schoemann said. After the selection, Schoemann that many of the issues and ideals within Washington County government are similar to those of Richfield. It was an easy transition that way, and the opportunity to not move and serve a larger constituency of the county was certainly appealing, Schoemann said. Prior to the board vote on the matter, County Board Chairman Herb Tennies said he tried to keep the selection of final candidates under hat because Schoemann had to notify Richfield officials of his decision to take the county position. Tennies explained that the process of selecting a new administrator began in July when the Executive Committee established the process. Applications from 22 individuals were received by Sept. 13. On Sept. 29, Tennies, Supervisor Dan Stoffel and County Clerk Brenda Jaszewski reviewed the applications and rated them. On Oct. 1, the Executive Committee chose the top four candidates for interviews, which were conducted by the committee on Oct. 15. Tennies said one candidate withdrew from consideration before the interviews. Tennies said Schoemann was unanimously recommended for the position by the Executive Committee. Supervisor Rick Gundrum, a member of the committee, said he was impressed with Schoemann and noted he is invested in the county since he resides in it. He has keen awareness of what our needs are moving forward, Gundrum said. Gundrum noted Schoemanns management strategies included collaborating with other communities and counties and keeping supervisors informed of ongoing matters. Gundrum added that Schoemann is strong in public relations and technology. The thing that really sold me the most about and impressed me the most were Joshs core principles and beliefs on how to run county government effectively and efficiently. Stoffel added the Schoemanns skill set is complete and that he shows enthusiasm for the job. Supervisor Donald Kriefall, whose district covers the village of Richfield, said Schoemann is an outstanding candidate for the position. To see him leaving Richfield is not the best for us, but it will be best for the county. Josh is outstanding, he works well with everyone, under normal circumstances and under extreme circumstances, Kriefall said.

hunter and that the recommendation to keep the rifle ban in place was a difficult decision. Hoell cited a Pennsylvania study which indicated that under certain circumstances a rifle slug can be more dangerous than a shotgun slug in part because a rifle slug can travel longer distances. Im looking at more of a common sense approach to this thing, Hoell said. Hoell said that in the northern part of the village where hunting is allowed, the land is flat. If I lived on the north end of Freistadt Road, I would be uncomfortable with people I dont know shooting rifles, Hoell said. If Im going to err, Im going to err on the side of caution. Hoell later said the issue has divided hunters and sportsmens organizations, as youre rolling the dice with safety. Hoell added that the city of Mequon only allows deer hunting with pistols while the village of Menomonee Falls Police Department was recommending keeping the rifle ban in place (The Menomonee Falls Village Board approved the ban earlier that evening). There is a lot of debate out there and it isnt an easy recommendation, he said. Trustee Terri Kaminski noted she resides in the northern portion of the village and has reported gunfire after sunset during hunting season. I think shotgun-only has been working for

us and it has given us some degree of safety. I would like to see us continue that, Kaminski said. Trustee Art Zabel said he preferred staying status quo with the current rifle ban for deer hunting until he received more information. Trustee Jeff Werderman noted there are restrictions on hunting in certain parts of the village already in place and said he supported Hoells request to keep the rifle ban in place.

Wiper blades: Your first defense

By Sam Erickson There are a lot of moving parts in a car, and some are more important than others. Some, however, are actually more important than people generally think they are. Almost all driving decisions are based on a clear view out of the windshield, so wiper blades play a critical role in the safety and security of everyone on the road. How do you know if your blades are in good shape? To check your blades, dump water on the windshield or use your windshield wipers with fluid to see how well they disperse the water. A visual inspection can also show you how pitted and cracked they have become. There are several things that can go wrong with blades and prevent them from working effectively. Cold weather is particularly hard on the rubber components. Consistent freezing and thawing can lead to wear on the blades, and the weather can leave them brittle and more apt to break. Blades can develop a curvature over time that prevents them from making clean contact with the windshield. The springs can get clogged with ice, which will prevent them from pushing the blades cleanly up against the windshield. When you do have ice and snow build up on the windshield, scrape it thoroughly before setting the wipers to working. The tendency is to want the wipers to do the clearing because you are in a hurry to get somewhere or don't want to be out in the cold for as long as it takes to do a good job. The problem with allowing the wipers to do the job is that they will be rub-

Prevent tire decay

By Ralph Lee Rotating your car's tires is like going to the dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's something that should be done. Depending on where and when it happens, getting a flat tire is similar to teeth issues. If a tire goes flat in your driveway, it's like a small cavity that has to be filled. It's annoying but not that big a deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traffic, you're talking full-blown root canal, and who wants that? Here are some tips to prevent tire decay. Most newer model cars are front-wheel drive, and tire rotation becomes important because the front tires wear faster than the rear. The reason for this is simple: When you make any kind of full turn in traffic or follow the curve of the road, more of the vehicle's weight is placed on the edges of the tires. This especially affects the front tires because these are ones that are actually turning while the rear tires stay in a straight line. This turning causes the edges of the tires to wear over time. If your tires wear unevenly, you're suspectible to spotty braking and poor handling-real toothaches, er, headaches. Another important aspect to tire rotation is the eventual replacement of your tires. If you don't rotate your tires, you'll replace them two at a time, and that means always having uneven wear on your wheels. If you replace your tires four at a time-and keep them rotated regularly-you'll have even wear on all four. How often should you rotate your tires? Well, that obviously varies based on the amount of miles you drive each day. Unfortunately, for some drivers, you may need to rotate your tires more often than you visit the dentist for a checkup. A rotation is often recommended at about 7,500 miles. That's often the time for an oil change, so do some multitasking and get both jobs done at once. Check your owner's manual to see when it recommends tire rotations for your particular model. How to have your tires rotated has been subject to debate similar to the discourse over the merits of fluoride. Again, check your owner's manual to see if there's a specific method recommended for your model of vehicle. If there isn't, there are two basic ways for front-wheel drive tire rotation, and both are as simple as flossing. One method is to move the front driver's side tire to the back driver's side and the back driver's side to the front passenger's side. The front passenger's side then moves to the back passenger's side and the back passenger's side to the front driver's side. Another method is to swap the front driver's side and the rear passenger's side tires with each other, and then swap the front passenger's side tire with the rear driver's side. Either method seems to help the tires achieve more even tread wear, and that's what you're after. Keeping your tires rotated on a regular basis can prevent an ill-timed flat tire and that can prevent grinding and gnashing your teethwhich is a whole different dental problem.

Tips for interior detailing

By Sam Erickson In the fall, people begin to think about the harsh roads of winter that lie ahead. That means checking the tires, the oil and other mechanical systems. If you've taken good care of your car during the year, then you might not have much to do. In fact, you might want to give yourself a treat and detail the interior of your car. Here are some tips. Basically, cars have two types of surfaces: hard and soft. Vacuuming is really your first step, and you'll want to make sure you have enough power in your vacuum to do the job. Often, plugin vacuums just don't have the power, so haul your household vacuum or your shop vac out to

All tuned up
By Tresa Erickson Most of us know that regular maintenance is key to a well-running vehicle. That's why we get our oil changed, have our tires rotated and so forth. Another important part of the regular maintenance schedule is the tune-up. Because the internal workings of vehicles have changed so much over the years, the definition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replacement of spark plugs to the complete overhaul of several areas within the vehicle. Most experts agree that the best tuneups involve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not every shop defines a tune-up in this way, however. Generally, the more involved the tune-up, the more it costs. When scheduling a tune-up, it is important that you find out what it will entail and how much it will cost. Be wary of really low estimates; chances are the shop is pushing for your business and the final bill for the tune-up will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not all drivers know what a tune-up is and request one on the assumption that it will fix whatever is wrong with their vehicle. They will ask why you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go from there. You may discover that what you really need are new battery cables rather than new spark plugs. Once you have several estimates, sit down and compare them. Select the shop whose estimate includes a fairly thorough inspection at a fair price. You want to make sure that when you drive away from the shop your vehicle is running smoothly and efficiently. The term "tune-up" means different things to different people. Keep that in mind as you shop around for estimates. Know what you are getting before you take your vehicle in, and if you are getting a tune-up for any reason other than maintenance issues, relay that information to the shop. If you don't, you could end up paying for a tune-up plus a repair.

GET READY FOR WINTER

...Detailing the interior

From page 19
the driveway. Be careful not to scratch any hard surfaces. Most vacuums come with a brush attachment that you can use to clean the hard surfaces without scratching them. Take the floor mats out and wash them with a hose, detergent and scrubber. These are usually the dirtiest areas of the car, and taking them out will allow you to really put some elbow grease into cleaning them. Vinyl hard surfaces are the easiest to clean. Any surface cleaning agent will do, although you will want to make sure you read the label to check for any warnings. Saturate a towel with solution, swab the area and then use a microfiber towel to wipe off any excess. Stubborn stains might take a couple of washings. If you want to do a really thorough job, take the seats out. This will give you access to the entire seat as well as the surrounding area. Next, you'll want to turn your attention to the soft surfaces. Are they leather or cloth? Often, the only real leather in a leather interior is on the seating surfaces and the rest of the surfaces are vinyl. Know the specs on your car to ensure you use the right products. Leather cleaners require special cleaning materials, so contact a local expert to see what they recommend. The best option for cloth seats is a good foam carpet cleaner, but that will require a wet/dry vacuum to clean. With any product, try cleaning a small, hidden area first to ensure you won't be removing the color or causing any other harm to the interior. Detailing the interior is a job you can do on your own, although you may have to buy a few products. Keeping the interior in excellent shape will provide you with a better feel in the car and will add to the resale value. You can put as much or as little time into this interior remodel as you like, but the more energy you put in, the higher your return will be.

bing and scraping up against ice, which can have a very jagged surface. This can put pits and chunks into the wiper blades, reducing their effectiveness in the long haul. Wiper blades are fairly easy to replace on most vehicles; they are designed to be changed by the owner. If you've ever been down the wiper blade aisle at your local market, you know they come in all sizes and shapes. You can usually buy just the blades or the whole blade assembly. Luckily, most places will have a useful guide that will tell you which size to buy according to the make and model of your car. If you aren't sure about replacement or what version to buy, check with your owner's manual or consult a dealer or a reputable source online. Windshield wiper blades seem like a very simple system-until they don't respond when you need them. Because of their composition, they are subject to several different kinds of potential problems. They are essential in the safe operation of your car, so keep them in good working order.

Taking care of your automobile

By Ralph Lee You may not know what end of a wrench to hold, but anybody can get a grip on these helpful car care tips. Get the soap Perhaps the simplest thing to do to take care of your car is to wash it on a regular basis. Washing your car once a week can help keep at bay the bugs, tar and other debris that can build up over time. Given a foothold, these things can become nearly impossible to clean off. If you can't manage a once-a-week wash, try for once a month. If you can't manage once a month and you have kids, hire 'em out. Check the oil. Stat! Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to be checked regularly. Check your owner's manual for the type of oil your car uses and where the oil dipstick under the hood is located. At least once a month, check your oil level. Top it off if necessary. All you need is the oil, a funnel and some paper towels to clean up any mess. And while you're checking the oil... Your car has other fluids that need to be checked every so often as well. These include automatic transmission fluid, coolant (antifreeze), brake fluid, differential oil and power steering fluid. Consult your owner's manual for the location of these fluid reservoirs. Check their levels periodically, top them off when necessary and have them changed when your manual indicates. Hold the grease You're keeping the outside of your car looking sharp with regular washings, but how about under the hood? Head to your local auto parts store and check out the variety of degreasers available. Follow the directions and watch your engine sparkle. An added benefit to having a clean engine is it makes it easier to locate any trouble spots (e.g., leaks). Windshield woes Between washings your windshield may get dirty from rain or snowstorms or our finefeathered friends. A clean windshield is crucial to safe driving. Virtually any kind of glass cleaner and lint-free towel will have your windshield sparkling in no time. Don't forget the inside of the windshield as well. Also check and clean your windows as necessary. Out, out, damned spot It's no fun noticing a spot or two on your windshield that you want to clean off and finding out you're out of washer fluid or, worse yet, your wipers are worn out. Wiper blades should be changed about once a year. Check your washer fluid level when you check the oil. Lots of lights There's nothing worse than looking in your rearview mirror and seeing the flashing lights of a police car behind you. Sometimes the reason for a traffic stop is as simple as a missing headlight or taillight. Avoid this problem by doing a periodic walkaround of your car to make sure all lighting systems are functioning. Don't forget the light illuminating your license plate. Inside the vehicle, make sure all your interior lights are working properly. Inflation situation Under- or over-inflated tires can be a dangerous-and sometimes deadly-situation. Tires improperly inflated wear out faster and can rob you of the gas mileage you deserve. Check your owner's manual for the proper amount of pressure your tires need. Get in the habit of checking each tire's pressure at regular intervals. You could be saving your life and you will save money.

sion. Look for cracking, fraying or missing pieces, all of which warrant a replacement. To get an accurate reading of a belt's tension, you need a belt tension gauge. If you don't have one of these, you can check the tension by depressing the belt along its longest straight section. If it deflects one-half to one inch, the tension is good. There are various types of belts. Here is a brief description of some of them, along with some maintenance tips: The drive belt or fan belt powers the power steering pump, air injection pump, air conditioning compressor and mechanical cooling fan. There are two types: the V-belt and the serpentine belt. The belts should be checked when the oil is changed. Look for signs of cracking (random cracks on the ribs of a serpentine belt are normal and don't require an immediate replacement), missing pieces, splitting or separating layers. The timing belt keeps the crankshaft and camshaft synchronized, which, in turn, keeps the valve operation matched to the position of the pistons. There are some engines in which the belt operates other parts, such as the water and oil pump and balance shafts. For this, manufacturers usually have a recommended mileage for replacement. Failure to follow this recommendation could result in major engine damage. Because it is easier to access the water pump, tensioning pulleys and timing belt sprockets when the timing belt is removed, you may want to consider replacing these parts as well. After checking the belts, you may check the hoses-the radiator hoses (upper and lower), heater hose and bypass hose. Look for small leaks, and if you find some, use duct tape as a temporary patch. If you notice the upper radiator hose has collapsed, you have a defective radiator pressure cap that will need to be replaced. Test the heater and radiator hoses by firmly squeezing them. If they are hard, make a crunching sound, are extremely soft or sticky, or are covered with oil, they need to be replaced. You should check the coolant hoses twice a year, in the spring and fall. You also need to check the hose connections, but only when the engine is warm. Drive the vehicle around for a while and then pop the hood. If you see swollen spots in the coolant hoses, this indicates areas of weakness and the hoses need to be replaced. You should also check for cold leaks. These generally seal themselves when the hoses get warm and expand, so wait until the engine has cooled and look for dry coolant cracks or small damp spots down the radiator, thermostat housing, hose ends or firewall. Belts and hoses are not difficult to maintain or overly expensive to replace. If you choose to ignore a defective belt or hose, however, it could lead to more expensive problems. It's a good idea to practice preventive maintenance, and if you aren't comfortable doing that yourself, to turn your vehicle over to a reliable mechanic.

Playoffs: Local teams in action

Falls loses to Marquette in regular season finale; Hamilton, Germantown dominate
Three local teams prepared last week for one more Friday night lights this season. Hamilton, Menomonee Falls and Germantown all qualified for the playoffs, with all first round games beginning at 7 p.m. Oct. 25. In Division 2, Hamilton will host Brookfield Central, which will be a rematch of an Oct. 12 game in which the Chargers beat the Lancers. In Division 1, Menomonee Falls was scheduled to host Fond du Lac while Germantown was scheduled to host Milwaukee Morse. In the final game of the season Oct. 18 Hamilton scored 21 points in the first and second quarters on the way to a 49-13 win over Wauwatosa East. Drew Patterson ran for 182 yards while scoring four touchdowns on 19 carries. Also, Isaiah Webb ran for 85 yards and two touchdowns on five carries. Hamilton's other touchdown came on a 10yard run by Travis Janus. We started off quick, and thats what we wanted to do tonight, Hamilton Coach John Damato said. Hamilton qualified for the playoffs the week before and Damato said his team wanted to end the regular season on a positive note to get momentum going to the playoffs. Milwaukee Marquette 35, Menomonee Falls 7: A 1-yard run by Christian Almonte of Menomonee Falls evened the score at 7-7 at the 3:14 mark of the first quarter. The Hilltoppers then scored the next 28 points to win the Greater Metro Conference title. For Marquette, Charlie Greif completed 19 of 30 passes for 343 yards and two touchdowns while running 15 times for 86 yards and three touchdowns. For Menomonee Falls, Almonte ran 17 times for 79 yards. Germantown 42, Port Washington 16: A fumble return by Steve Doran at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter was the first of five touchdowns for Germantown in the quarter. Girls volleyball: Falls second in Greater Metro tourney

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR After rallying to defeat Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) in its home tournament earlier this season, Menomonee Falls second attempt at a comeback was quashed by the Dashers in the Greater Metro Conference file Oct. 19. The teams split the first four games to send the match into a tie-breaker set. Menomonee Falls was trailing 8-10 when the Dashers reeled off four straight points and was within one point of wining the title. Menomonee Falls scored the next three points before the Dashers closed out the match to win 24-26, 25-17, 2624, 21-25, 15-11. Afterward, Menomonee Falls Coach J.C. Bruns said his team got in one of its bad rotations that it has gotten into in the past but not this year. They (DSHA) just took advantage of it. They were much better offensively than we were today, consistency-wise, and we werent, Bruns said. Youve got to take your hats off them, they played well and definitely deserved the win today. The match pitted two of the top three ranked teams in the Division I coaches poll, with Falls ranked first and DSHA third. We had plenty of different times when we could have turned tail and decided not to keep fighting, but we came back in multiple situations and won games when we were down, which is good to see because were going to get into those situations when we get in the playoffs and if we get there to state, Bruns said. I was happy to see that. Youre going to have to beat teams like that to keep advancing. It was good to get that kind of a game in before the regular season ended. Menomonee Falls started the day with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-15 win over Brookfield Central in the semifinal. Menomonee Falls has a first round bye in the playoffs which begin Oct. 24. The Indians will begin play Oct. 26 by hosting the winner of the Waukesha South/Homestead match. Bruns said the preparation for the regional weekend would be similar as in past years. Hamilton - which lost to DSHA in the quarterfinal opener Oct. 17 - split its two games Oct. 19. The Chargers defeated Wauwatosa East 20-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 and then lost to West Allis Hale 17-25m 12-25, 13-25. Germantown second in North Shore tournament Germantown placed second at the North Shore Conference meet Oct. 19, falling to host Nicolet in the final, 22-25, 23-25. Germantown opened the day with a 25-19, 25-10 win over Grafton and followed that with wins over Milwaukee Lutheran (25-13, 25-19) and Homestead (25-19, 21-25, 15-12). Germantown opened the postseason with a 25-1, 25-3, 25-6 win over Milwaukee Madison Oct. 24. Germantown will face Arrowhead Oct. 26. Arrowhead beat Hamilton in the sectional semifinal Oct. 24, 25-14, 25-23, 25-17.

Soccer: Germantown tops Sheboygan North

The Germantown boys soccer team defeated Sheboygan North 2-1 in a sectional semifinal at North Oct. 24. With the win, Germantown advanced to the sectional final against Arrowhead at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at Germantown. Arrowhead advanced to the sectional final with a 2-1 win over Menomonee Falls Oct. 24. Boys volleyball: The Germantown boys volleyball team is seeded second in its bracket. The brackets were released last week. Germantown will open postseason play Nov. 5 against the winner of the Nov. 1Nicolet/Homestead match.

AT EQUIPMENT RENTALS
We Can Help You . . .

Options for insulation

By Sam Erickson With colder temperatures coming, you might be thinking about making some additions that will help your home and your pocketbook get through the winter unscathed. Many people automatically think of drafty places in the home like doorsills or older windows. It's a great idea to pay attention to these, but insulation actually has a much greater effect. Rather than a quick draft, poor insulation is like a slow sieve, leaking energy at every surface of your home. Fall is the perfect time to install more insulation in your home. The first step is to find out how much insulation you actually have. Crawl up in to your attic and look at the depth of the insulation there. That can offer you a clue about the quality of the rest of the insulation in your home. There are also numerous organizations that will come out and do a home energy audit for you. Having an energy audit is a good idea for a number of reasons, including the fact that it will reveal the quality of insulation in hard-to-check places like inside your walls. These days, you've got several options for home insulation. Most people think of giant rolls of pink, and these rolls or batts are still readily available. Made of fiberglass or rock wool, they are easy to install and relatively cheap. They are also cut to standard widths to fit between wall studs or floor joists in the ceiling. You might also look into professional installation of loose-fill, rigid foam or foam-in-place insulation. Loose-fill insulation can be blown into place, making it useful for oddshaped places like roofs or ducting where it can be difficult to install other kinds of insulation. Rigid foam can be applied to exterior walls and has a higher R-rating based on thickness. Each type of insulation is given an R-rating, essentially a measure of how much resistance to heat flow the product has. As you do your research, you'll quickly learn the R-values of different types of insulation. Remember that these are based on depth as well, and the resistance to heat will change based on how much material you put into your house. Each region of the country has different recommendations for the amount of insulation you should have, so check with your contractor before proceeding to maximize your investment. Insulation is one of the most effective ways you can reduce your energy expenditures, offering a much faster return on your investment than other options. In addition to keeping your home warm in the winter, insulation can keep the heat out in the summer, doubling your investment. Once you've completed your renovation, you can cozy up for the winter under the new blanket for your house.
