Have your say on the future of public transport
in the ACT
The ACT Government is developing the Sustainable Transport Action Plan 2010-2016 to help
us meet our sustainable transport targets.
A key part of this Action Plan will be the ACT Public Transport Strategy. The Government has
released a discussion paper, ACT Strategic Public Transport Network Plan, which proposes what
public transport in the ACT could look like in 2031.
We need your input into how we can improve public transport to create a more sustainable
and integrated transport system for all Canberrans. Your comments will feed into the
Government’s final Public Transport Strategy.

Stromlo Forest Park draft Master Plan
The Project Team has prepared a draft Master Plan as the context for the future development of
Stromlo Forest Park. The draft Master Plan was developed with input from community members
and interested user groups during the first round of consultation.
Interested persons are invited to view the draft Master Plan at a drop-in session to be held on
Saturday 8 August from 9.30am to 3.30pm at the Event Pavilion, Stromlo Forest Park, Uriarra
Road, Stromlo. Members of the Project Team will be available to explain the plans and answer
any questions.
The draft plans are on display and feedback forms are available online at

Epic Community Advisory Committee
Expressions of interest are sought from people wishing to provide input into the future
development of Exhibition Park In Canberra (EPIC).
Members of the Community Advisory Committee will contribute information and advice to the
Exhibition Park Corporation for consideration.
It is envisaged that the Committee will have a maximum of ten members and will meet three
to four times a year to consider issues it deems relevant to the future of EPIC.
Potential applicants should be aware that no remuneration will be provided to members of the
Committee for their services.

Events
450 volunteers needed for World Mountain
Bike Championships
Would you like to help stage one of the biggest events ever held in Canberra? If so,
why not register as a volunteer at the World Mountain Bike Championships to be held
in Stromlo Forest Park from 1 to 6 September 2009.
The event is expected to attract in excess of 40,000 people, several hundred journalists from
across the world, and an estimated TV and online audience of 30 to 35 million people. 
Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles. These include working in the media centre,
information booths, merchandise areas and VIP marquee services, or working out on one of
the courses doing course marshalling. No previous experience is required as full training will
be provided.
As well as a sense of fulfilment, volunteers will receive an event t-shirt and goodie kit, as

H1N1 Influenza 2009
We are now in the PROTECT phase of the response to H1N1 influenza ’09 pandemic. During this
phase, laboratory testing of most people with respiratory symptoms is not needed to either
begin isolation of patients or for appropriate use of anti-viral medications.
Testing will only be performed in limited circumstances where it might assist
clinical management.
Anti-viral medication (Tamiflu™) from the ACT Medical Stockpile is being prioritised for those
who meet specific criteria. This includes symptomatic people who: have moderate to severe
illness; or have been identified as being vulnerable to severe infection with H1N1 Influenza
’09 such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, pregnant women, and people who
are obese, have chronic respiratory conditions, or with other chronic conditions that may
predispose them to severe infection.
Your GP may make a clinical decision to provide you with a private prescription for Tamiflu™
if you do not meet the above criteria. In this case you will be required to purchase the antiviral
at your own expense. Please note, Tamiflu™ is not recommended during the PROTECT phase
for contacts of confirmed cases.
Anyone concerned about influenza should contact healthdirect Australia on
1800 022 222, their GP or the Australian Government Influenza Hotline on 180 2007.
Record demand for public hospital services
The ACT’s public hospitals are currently facing record demands for their services.
The Government is putting in place strategies to deal with this increased demand. We are
working with the ACT’s private hospitals to buy more beds; we are expanding the Hospital in
the Home services; some patients booked into Canberra Hospital for elective surgery will have
their surgery reallocated to Calvary Hospital; and we may have to consider extended periods
of reduced elective surgery, especially at Canberra Hospital. This will keep more operating
theatres available for more urgent work and reduce pressure on the Intensive Care Unit.
This situation may last for up to three months.
We will continue to offer public hospital care but it may be provided in one of four hospitals,
Canberra Hospital, Calvary Public Hospital, Calvary John James or National Capital Hospital.
People will have to wait longer for less urgent conditions, particularly in our Emergency
Departments and for elective surgery.

Please don’t go to our Emergency Departments for minor conditions. You can contact
