Jorge Rodriquez, 38, is running as a write-in candidate for the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Board of Education. Rodriquez, 2014 president of the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball Association (SSLYBA), knows his write-in candidacy for a full four-year term on the board of education is a long shot at best. Rodriquez is well-aware that write-in candidates rarely are elected. But hes running as a write-in candidate anyway if only to establish his desire to do whatever he can to help his school district as much as the SSLYBA, with which hes been involved for years as a parent, coach and board member. He served as vice president in 2012. I was so busy with baseball last spring that I missed the deadline to file petitions to run for school board, Rodriquez said. I didnt really expect to win as a firsttime candidate anyway, so I decided to go ahead and run as a write-in just to get my name out there for the next election in two more years. Rodriquez is challenging current BOE President Sheila Lopez and longtime BOE member and current Vice President Gloria Behrendt for the two four-year seats on the ballot this year. The newest BOE member, Amy DeLuca (who was appointed to serve the remaining two years of August Scarpelli who was elected in 2011 and resigned last spring), is running unopposed for the remainder of that unexpired term. Rodriquez and his wife, Christa, have three children.
