Tribes of North America

You have one week and one weekend to complete each project. We will have 30 minutes of class time each day; each week, you must use it wisely in order to get everything done. If you have to take it home, wait until the weekend, that way you dont forget it at home, and have nothing to work on that day in class. This is not a PARENT project, it is your responsibility to do the research and put the project together IN CLASS, last minute weekend work is okay, but I expect the work to be done in class.

Create 2 projects. One for each Northwest Coastal and Southwestern tribes. No project for Great Plains, just a map with their region highlighted neatly. Write One paper, for the Eastern Woodland Tribes Create a double bubble map that shows how the Southwest Tribal Region compares with the Northwest Coast Tribal Region. Pay close attention to the Food, Water, Shelter and Transportation, as well as the Social, Economic and Political set up for each region. Create a triple bubble map that shows how the Eastern Woodland Tribe compares with the Southwest Tribal Region AND the Northwest Coast Tribal Region. Pay close attention to the Food, Water, Shelter and Transportation, as well as the Social, Economic and Political set up for each region.

Make a Pop Up Scene or Shoebox diorama Create the pop up by using the large sheet of heavy paper. Fold it in half and make two cuts, each inch from the center, only cut into the paper about 2 inches. See Sample in class. Open the folded paper and push the cut strip in toward the center, creasing it to form an L shape. On the back of the topside of your box or pop-up, paste your cut out of North America. Color the area on the North America Map where these tribes lived. Label the names of all the tribes from this region. Label the names of the oceans that surround North America. Cut the person from the template and decorate that person as a Native American from the selected region. Keeping in mind the materials they would have had available in their region, the climate in their region, and their customs. Decorate the top inside to look like the landscape of their region. You must include all of the geographic features of their region, their main source of water, their climate, the topography and the types of animals and food available in that region. Include in your landscape an accurate picture of the type of shelters ad modes of transportation that these tribes would have used. Understand how the availability of water and food sources affects how these tribes survive. Understand how the climate affects how they live, how they get what they need to survive. Understand how the location of their region affects how they live, how they dress, what they eat, the type of house they live in. Understand what parts of their ancient culture we still use as part of our culture now. Understand and be able to discuss the Social, Political, Economic customs of their tribes. Social: What do they do for entertainment, how do they communicate in their tribe and with others outside the tribe, what responsibilities do each member of the tribe hold, who is in charge of the families? Economic: How do the tribes get what they need to live? Do they buy, sell, steal, trade? How do they make a living; farm, hunt, make and sell? What impact does their climate/location/environment have on their ability to meet their basic needs and get what they want? Political: Who was in charge of the tribe? Who makes the laws? Who decides what happens when things are not done by the law? How is the tribe organized; president, chief, council, king? Do they have any policies that have impacted how our government is set up today?

Make a Mobile-See the samples in class Create the mobile by cutting out the large triangleish shape with the rectangle box on the front. Label the box with the tribal region you are researching. Decorate the back side of the large triangle with the North America Map. Color the area on the North America Map where these tribes lived. Label the names of all the tribes from this region. Label the names of the oceans that surround North America. Research the landscape of their region. You must include all of the geographic features of their region, their main source of water, their climate, the topography and the types of animals and food available in that region. What types of food do they eat? How do they get their food? Where does their food come from? What does their location/climate/environment have to do with the types of food they eat? How does the water quality and source impact their lives, growing seasons, movement, success? Research the clothing. What impact does their climate/location/environment have on their clothing style? What impact did their beliefs/customs have on their clothing? What about their clothing has had a lasting impact on our lives today? Research the Shelters they build to live in. What impact does their environment have on their style of house? How do their customs/beliefs impact their style of house? What about their homes has impacted how people live today? How is the tribe organized; president,

chief, council, king? Do they have any policies that have impacted how our government is set up today?

Put the mobile together. Label the geometric shapes: Social, Political, Economic, Food/Water, Shelter, Clothing. Put facts about each heading on the small rectangles. You can put more than one fact on each. You can put facts on the back, as well. Hang the rectangles on string and attach them to the geometric shapes under the headings where they belong. Hang each geometric shape on the hanger. You can draw or paste pictures on each geometric shape if you have time AFTER the mobile is put together.

Make a Fold-able Brochure-See the sample in class. Create the brochure by folding the large paper in thirds, you will make 2 folds. Cut the right hand fold into 4 sections, you will make 3 cuts about 3 apart. Decorate the inside of the first flap of the brochure with the North America Map. Color the area on the North America Map where these tribes lived. Label the names of all the tribes from this region. Label the names of the oceans that surround North America. Label each section of the right hand flap that you cut: Social/Economic/Political, Clothing, Food/Water, Shelter. You can leave room on each one for a picture if you like. Research the landscape of their region. On the back you must include a picture or paragraphs describing the geographic features of their region, their main source of water, their climate, the topography and the types of animals and food available in that region.

Decorate the front of the brochure. Label it with the region of the tribe and color it to represent the tribes and their customs.
