What would you say if I told you that nobody is luckier than
anybody else?

Or if I said that all self-made millionaires were bankrupt or
almost bankrupt at least once during their careers?

Or that you have COMPLETE control over what happens to
you?

Or that, in order to be successful, all you need to do is change
your thoughts?

Well, you would probably tell me that I am talking rubbish.

On the other hand, though, I am living proof that, by applying
certain principles and focusing on my goals, I am well on the way
to the life I desire. It doesnt have to be all about money. Even my
wife likes me now!

I have read hundreds of self-help books, and nothing seemed to
work. One or two books stuck in my mind, and helped in little ways,
but improvement seemed a long way off.

I have spent the last two years surfing the internet looking for
answers. I started to read message boards, articles, and download
e-books onto my PC. Over a period of time everything became
clearer.

A PATTERN BEGAN TO EMERGE.

The Science of Success
Gary Vurnum 2002, All Rights Reserved

A central theme that was so basic, so simple, and so obvious, that
I was amazed that nobody had thought of it before.

Well, they had thought of it before. As I delved deeper into the
Web, I realised that, even as early as 1904, books were being
written about this key to success.

This e-book has been written with the modern man (and woman) in
mind. It is by no means comprehensive, but gives an
understanding of what YOU can achieve if you really want to.

If you apply only half of these principles, the quality of your
life will improve dramatically.

If you have any comments on this book (good or bad!), I would
love to hear from you at gary@scienceofsuccess.com.

Only by working together can we become a success
together

Good luckto OUR SUCCESS!

The property of a more than adequate quantity or supply

Everywhere around you is
abundance. All you have to do to
see it, is to appreciate how lucky
you are.

Living in the western world, you have access to
fresh water, food and shelter. Money is also
available to most people, they just have to know
where to find it. Do you buy a newspaper every
day? Do you play the lottery every week? Do
you pay for satellite TV every month? Are you
paying too much for your mortgage? There are
many ways to find money - you just have to
look.

The act of accomplishing something

Celebrate your achievements at the
start of the race, not at the end. By
the end of the race, you will have
already started on the next one and
won't have time.

Think about one thing that you achieved when
you were younger. How did you feel? How did
you celebrate? Think like a grown-up, but
celebrate your achievements as a child would.

Even when a car has stopped the
engine still ticks over. Make sure
that you are always ready to move

Always be alert for any opportunity, any

thought you had on the train the other morning
will either be forgotten, or will be under
investigation. If you want to be successful,
make sure that it is the latter.

There is an inevitability about where
we are going. We just need to be

The only thing that is certain in life is that we

decide that you are going to be a success, or
you can be certain. Only by acting consistently
with this certainty in you mind, will your
outcome match your desires.

An event that occurs when something passes from one

Everyone has to change to become
successful. How could you get to
where you want to go without
changing what you do now?

In business, change is usually treated with
derision or contempt. In our personal lives, if we
don't change and evolve, we stand still. By
standing still, we are, in effect, falling behind
our peers. Look upon change as an opportunity
and embrace it.

time worth. Divide your annual salary by 1820.

Complete attention; intense mental effort

The reason why it is hard to
concentrate is because of the
balance of effort vs. reward. The
more effort you have to put into
something, the more reward you
will get out of it.

Ignore people who say that they can
concentrate whilst the TV is on, or whilst a CD is
playing. The brain will automatically be drawn to
that which is the most interesting, and in most
cases, it won't be the task you have to do. If you
cannot work in silence, then have some
instrumental music on quietly in the
background. Studies have found that baroque
music (such as music by Vivaldi), may even
help you to concentrate.

A learning process in which an organism's behavior
becomes dependent on the occurrence of a stimulus in its
environment

We have been conditioned all of our
lives by outside influences -
television, friends, relatives -
whether they have meant to or not.
Once you realise that all of this can
be reversed, you will know that
there are no limits to what you can
achieve.

Everything we experience is filtered by our
conditioning. As such conditioning influences
are different for everyone, you can never know
how someone will react to a situation. The only
way you can reverse any belief of your own is to
recognize why you hold such a view in the first
place, and work on changing it.

Motivation deriving logically from ethical or moral
principles that govern a person's thoughts and actions

If you can succeed with a clear
conscience, then at least you can
say that people have benefited from
your success.

Your conscience exists to provide you with a
barometer of where you should draw the line
when interacting with other people. If you live
your life at the expense of others, then
ultimately, your conscience will hold you back,
and will stop you from reaching the summit of
your dreams.

make the other person change their view. They
have arrived at their opinion based on their
experiences and are therefore entitled to it.

Reliability or uniformity of successive results or events

Consistency has got you to where
you are today, and it can get you to
where you want to go if you can
develop a little every day.

Once you start to analyze why you are where
you are now, you will realise that it is because
of consistent actions. If you consistently buy
things and feel guilty, pay for the movie channel
even if you hardly watch it, then you know what
you are going to need to consistently change if
you want success.

A courteous or respectful or considerate act

Show someone a little courtesy, and
they will certainly remember you.

Showing someone courtesy is something that
seems to have stopped over the last generation
or so. Small acts of kindness such as opening
doors, or giving up your seat for someone can
make someone's day. Why waste an opportunity
for helping someone at so little cost to you? As
your act will be an exception to the norm, the
person on the receiving end will undoubtedly be
grateful for it. Put a smile on somebody's face. It
doesn't cost anything.

The ability to create

Everyone is creative in some way.
You might be able to paint, or draw,
or you might be able to creatively
solve problems at work. Once you
know where you are creative, make
sure that you make use of it.

If you want to be a success, you have to make
use of your talent. The most successful people
make money doing what they love. The majority
of people know what they would really love to
do, but never think hard enough to find a way to
make a success of it. If you have a dream, but
not the finances, or the situation, to spend a lot
of time on developing it, at least make a little
headway on a regular basis.

One trait of successful people is curiosity. They

destination. If someone else can do it, they

The state of affairs that a plan is intended to achieve and

If footballers didn't have something
to shoot at, they wouldn't have a
goal to aim for.

Write down your ultimate goal. Write down a
time frame for it. Break it down so that you can
measure it yearly, monthly, weekly, and ideally,
daily. Picture your goal in your mind in as much
detail as possible, and focus on it every day
without fail.

A feeling of thankfulness and appreciation

Show gratitude before you receive
something, and not after.

Some people never even bother with gratitude,
they are too busy thinking about themselves. All
successful people show gratitude, some more
effectively than others. One of the hardest
things to do is to show gratitude BEFORE you
get what you want. By doing so, you hand over
your goal to your subconscious to work on, and
you now have both your conscious and sub-
conscious aligned towards your task.

A progression from simpler to more complex forms

Reading newspapers doesn't help
you grow. Read a book and learn
something positive.

Be selective in what you watch on TV, or who
you associate with. You can only grow towards
your goal by interacting with things or people
that can help show you the way. You may watch
the news on TV for thirty minutes every day.
You may now know what went on in the world,
but it doesn't help you achieve anything. Bad
news sells more newspapers than good news.
Don't get caught up with everybody else. Very
few successful people have the time or
inclination to watch the news, so use your time
more effectively.

A pattern of behaviour acquired through frequent repetition

If you have any bad habits you can
change them in a month. But only if
you really want to.

Habits are addictions that go unnoticed by most
people. Habits can be changed, but because
they are so ingrained over a long period of time,
people think it is impossible to change them.
The pain associated with changing a habit, more
often than not, outweigh the benefits of the
change in Mr. Average's eyes. You have to
REALLY want to change a habit more than you
want to keep it.

The quickness of action or occurrence

Act now. Tomorrow you will have
other opportunities to consider.
Once you miss the moment, it will
be gone forever.

Successful people are always labelled as being
in the 'right place at the right time' in our
society. The reason they are is because they
always act on an opportunity the moment it
presents itself. It is only when this action is
viewed retrospectively that it appears they were
fortunate to have had the opportunity.

A change for the better; progress in development

Improve the lives of those closest to
you without any expectation, and
your life will improve even more
than theirs.

Taking those closest to you for granted is an
easy thing to do. The hard thing to do is to help
them, even occasionally. It may be cooking
once a week, or phoning your parents, but little
regular things can improve your relationships
dramatically. If your domestic environment is
stable and happy, you have more opportunity to
become successful.

Innovation is usually associated

An idea comes into your head about how you

The clear understanding of a complex situation

Getting to the essential element of
any task is one of the most valuable
skills you can develop. Insight is

Everybody who works will know someone who
has the ability to get to the root of an idea or
problem very quickly. In most cases, these
people become respected managers. The key to
developing insight is to find out the most
important element of an idea or a problem, and
go with your gut feeling. This takes confidence,
but unless you take a chance, you will never
find out if you were right. Your insight may not
always be right, but over time, you will have

Nobody can define instinct. Just

Instinct is another ability that is generally
ignored in today's materialistic world. The lure
of money quite often compromises your
instinct. Even though, deep down, you know
that something feels wrong, the lure of short-
term gain proves too much. You must rely on
your instinct, no matter how hard it can
sometimes be, as otherwise, success will be

Instinctive knowing (without the use of rational processes)

Intuition is sometimes called the
sixth sense. If this is the case, why
is it ignored?

Whatever intuition can be defined as, we do not
use it often enough. Women (especially
mothers) tend to use their intuition over
anything else where children's safety is
concerned. This sixth sense is used without
thinking about whether it is 'right' or not. By not
listening to your instinct, you are ignoring a
very valuable resource, if only because you
cannot base it in reality.

The psychological result of perception and learning and

Knowledge is gained from learning from others

Changing a person's beliefs by argument or reasoning or
entreaty

Never confuse persuasion with
coercion. If it's not right for
someone, why are you trying to
force it upon them?

How do you feel when somebody tries to force
you into their way of thinking, or uses emotional
blackmail to get you to do something?
Remember that persuasion should be a gentle
nudge backed up with facts, and nothing else.

An act of formulating a program for a definite course of

If you devoted one hour a day to

the first week, you will end up with
an additional hour at the end of
each day.

All buildings are planned meticulously even
before the first brick is laid. If they didn't know
what the final building was going to look like,
they wouldn't know what materials to use, or
how long it will take to build. If you plan the path
to your success with meticulous precision, and
with constant re-evaluation, then you will
achieve your targets in the time frame you
require.

Capability of existing or happening or being true

Always remember that if someone
has done something before, then
you can do it too. You just have to
find out how they did it, which is
harder than actually doing it.

If someone has proved that something is
possible by achieving it, then it can be possible
for you to do it. The only problem is that you
cannot easily model their state of mind. What
you can do is analyse their motivation and try to
mimic them.

The inherent capacity for coming into being

You have the potential to be
whoever you want to be, but you
have to really want to try.

You will never hear a successful person say the
word impossible. Successful people know that,
even if something seems impossible at the
moment, it may be possible in the right
circumstances in the future. Remove the word
impossible from your life. If you tell someone
that you want to be a millionaire in a year's time,
and they tell you that it is impossible, tell them
that it isn't. Someone, somewhere, has become
a millionaire in less than a year, so why can't
you?

Possession of controlling influence

You don't need to have power over
anybody to be successful. You only
have to have the power to control
your own thoughts.

Power is often overused in our current lifestyle.
There are many cases where power 'goes to
somebody's head' which tends to result in the
'Don't you know who I am?' attitude. People
respond to others who make THEM feel
important, and not those who revel in their own
importance. Limit your urge for power to that of
the power of your own destiny and you will
become successful.

All of your experiences that determine how things appear
to you

Reality is where you are now - not
where you can be in the future.

Mr. Average is restricted by a reality which is
defined by where he is now, and how he got
there. Mr. Successful's only restriction is the
number of hours in the day he has to make his
own reality. Remain focused on your future, and
not on your past and present.

for a reason. You may not like it, but
you can always learn from it.

Every success, and every setback, happens for
a reason. In the game of life, the only way to win
is by making your own rules based upon what
has happened to you. The problem is that Mr.
Averages focus is on what he hasn't got, rather
than the reasons why he hasn't got them in the
first place. Gain something from every
experience you have. They happen for a reason.

The act of repeating

Little things repeated every day will
eventually become big things. So
do you want to continually repeat
the negative things in your life or
the positive ones?

If you constantly repeat your mistakes, then you
will either remain where you are, or you will go
backwards. If you regularly spend an hour
reading a newspaper at the expense of playing
with your children, then your children will
repeatedly lose out. The cost of buying a coffee
on the way to work every day, could result in
you losing out on an opportunity of a long
weekend away every year. Focus on repeating
the good things at the expense of the not-so-
good things.

It is really a small sacrifice to
devote time to helping others, but it
has a massive effect on your self

If you don't give anything, you can't expect
anything in return. Sacrificing an hour a week to
tidying up, or playing with your children, is only
1/168th of your week. One hour of the day on

The quality of being simple or uncompounded

Life is simple. It's the baggage that
we carry around in our head that
makes it difficult.

Intentionally or not, Mr. Average complicates his
own life. He has five credit cards, a garden that
he hasn't got the time to maintain, or a second
car that sits at the train station all day. He has
these things because everyone else does. Do
you want to be like everyone else, or like no-one
else? Simplify your life, and give yourself more
room to think.
