Accessing your www folder:


Open the Windows Start button Select My Computer and then select Computer. Under Computer you will see your (H:) Drive listed as: username (\\myhome.itap.purdue.edu\myhome)- where username is your career account login.

Select your (H:) Drive folder and scroll until you find the www folder this folder was established for all Purdue students, faculty and staff when the account was created.

Steps to establish and link a Wordpress site to your Home Drive (H:):
Now that you are in the www folder, we need to Create a New Folder o For easier access name the folder wordpress or wp. o It is easier to maintain the same letter case so that you may access the documents on the web easier and to avoid any conflict when locating the file. Computer> username (\\myhome.itap.purdue.edu\myhome (H:) > www> wordpress

Visit www.wordpress.org

Download WordPress 3.7 Select Download WordPress 3.7 (the zipped file) again. o Your download should now begin o Select Save file Browse for www folder then save to wordpress folder (created in previous steps).

*Note: if you download the file and seem to have misplaced it, go to Downloads and scroll to find Wordpress 3.7 zipped files. From here you need to:

Select the wordpress 3.7 file & make sure it is highlighted as such:

The menu bar will then show Compressed Folder Tools tab at the top Select Extract all at the top menu bar, you will then be prompted to select the location in which you would like the files to extract to Select Browse Scroll to find the www folder Select a Destination (the wordpress or wp folder created previously) and Select OK

Now that we have created a wordpress folder under our www folder (located on our Home Directory or (H:) Drive) and moved the wordpress files to that folder, we need to setup MySQL Database. MySQL allows you to store information documents and files and access them anywhere, anytime. It gives students the ability to organize, and utilize web tools within 50MB of data.

To setup a new MySQL database for first-time users visit:


https://www.purdue.edu/apps/ics/a/MySQLAccount The account will be created on mydb.ics.purdue.edu To create a new MySQL: use your Career Account Login username, and create a new password

*Note: For security purposes it is imperative to create a password that is different from your Career Account login.

For returning users: there is two ways to access your MySQL database
1. Open web browser and type expert.ics.purdue.edu o When prompted type: mysql -h mydb.ics.purdue.edu p o Enter your newly created MySQL password 2. Or, you may login here : http://web.ics.purdue.edu/software/phpMyAdmin/ The prompt will look like this:

After logging in you will land on your MySQL homepage:

*Note: Most ITaP computer labs already have a Secure File Transfer Protocol (FTP) installed, however, if you seem to run into errors visit: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/security/download *Note: you may also download these softwares to your personal computer- they will be needed to map your network drive if you choose to access your Home Directory (H:) on your personal computer.

For a Windows/PC ITaP Computer:


Download the SecureFx: http://www.purdue.edu/securePurdue/download/ Open SecureFx

*Note: If SecureFx is already installed you may find it by opening Windows and typing SecureFx in the search menu.

Open a new session:

When prompted select SFTP from the menu and click Next For the Hostname: ftp.ics.purdue.edu Use for Career Account username for the login username. Select Finish and Connect

For a Mac ITaP Computer:


Download Fetch here: http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/free Open Fetch

Once Open- go to Downloads- Select WordPress 3.7- Copy and move files and drop them into Fetch

*Note: Fetch should already be installed; you may check by opening the search icon at the top right window of the home screen- type Fetch and Open the software.

Accessing MySQL Database:


Now that we have established a secure and accessible link, you should be able to visit your newly created MySQL database by visiting your established web address: web.ics.purdue.edu/~username/wordpress/

*Note: Username is your career account username, and wordpress is the folder you moved the downloaded zip files to after creating a New Folder in your www account. Often times students may run into a permissions error that could be a 404 Not Found error.

To check your permissions settings on a Mac Computer:


Use the search menu and type SecureCRT Open the software and Click the Quick Connect icon

For the Protocol select SSH2 if not already selected Hostname:web.ics.purdue.eduVerify that the port is 22 and that None is selected for the Firewall. For authentication: make sure each is selected and checked- Select Save Session and Connect

At the Secure Shell Password prompt enter your Career Account Login information - and Select Save. Once you have secured and finalized a successful link to your personal www webpage you need to visit your MySQL homepage here: http://web.ics.purdue.edu/software/phpMyAdmin/ Select Import Choose Folder- Click Ok or Import

Congratulations!

I know it took a few tedious steps, but you now have successfully established your own personal Purdue webpage with access to all the free downloadable features of the WordPress host. To see what additional features you are able to access, including advanced plug-ins and themes login to: web.ics.purdue.edu/~username/wordpress/ At the bottom right corner select the Log In link and type your created username and MySQL password.

From here you can enjoy all of the features WordPress offers- post updates, create new pages, create and define menu lists and personalize widgets
