Shining Light Homes

"Sanctuary for the miracle of birth" Shining Light Homes provides supervised Christian transitional housing in the Hampton Roads area for single mothers and their children under age 4, for up to two years. The goal of Shining Light Homes is to help these young mothers to become self-sufficient and productive citizens in their community moving them from homelessness to a home. Shining Light Homes provides education, counseling, goal setting, spiritual support and connections to local resources while making important decisions for their future and the future of their babies. Shining Light Homes is supported by community groups, local churches and concerned individuals. Shining Light Homes is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia and is currently awaiting approval of our application for 501(c)(3) non-profit organization designation from the IRS.

While volunteering at the Crisis Pregnancy Centers, she has met single mothers who struggle. Some are having a hard time making ends meet or just finding a place to live; some have no transportation; some have little to no help from their family. Now that Patti is nearing retirement, she has a deep desire is to give back to the community to help mothers overcome these struggles. Her desires and dream have come alive in Shining Light Homes.

Pastor Patti Johnson Founder/President

Patti Hall Johnson, a resident of Virginia for approximately 45 years, currently works for the corporate office of the New York Times in the World Trade Center. She has been in Information Technology for over 35 years. She started her career at the Virginian Pilot and Ledger Star in 1976. She volunteers at the Portsmouth Keim Center where she teaches parenting, nutrition, pre-natal and postnatal classes to single mothers. At the age of 16, Pattis life was interrupted with an unplanned pregnancy which caused her to leave high school and begin a new life as a mother. Through the struggles and grace of God she overcame the odds of raising her daughter with no support from the daughters father and minimal support from her parents. Her daughter went on to college and became a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and is currently a stayat-home mother raising her 3 children. She is a childrens church teacher, a volunteer at several schools, and very involved within her community. After having what Patti considered her first real job at the Virginian Pilot with health, life and dental insurance, she started donating money to the United Way selecting Other Homes for Single Mothers as its destination and usage.

Shining Light Homes, a non-profit corporation, will provide supervised Christian transitional housing for single mothers and their children under age 4, for up to two years. The vision of Shining Light Homes is to help single mothers become self-sufficient, successful, productive citizens. In assisting them, their children, grandchildren and their communities will flourish exponentially. Our mission is to help these single mothers take care of themselves and their children, while they work at improving their financial situation through spiritual support, education, training, counseling, goal setting, and connections to local resources and assistance, thus moving them into their own home, with a job, child care and transportation. We are in the beginning stages of launching this ministry and are in great need of various forms of support. We need office space, equipment, supplies, fundraising and grant writing expertise and most importantly, financial support. This will allow us to purchase our first home. Our future vision for this ministry is to have homes in all fifty states; therefore, forming partnerships with various organizations that share or can benefit from our mission which is very important to us. Shining Light Homes is a much needed ministry in the Hampton Roads area and we are working very hard to ensure that this ministry is successful. Therefore, your prayers and any other forms of support are greatly appreciated.
