Visual Mechanics CD-ROM.

Project Consultants Gil Emmert - University of Wisconsin - Madison Joe Guarino - Boise State University Welcome to the Visual Mechanics CD-ROM. This CD-ROM contains over 60 simulations taken from Dynamics and a copy of the Working Model 2D Textbook Edition 5.0 sof tware. The version of the Working Model 2D Textbook Edition 5.0 software includ ed on this CD-ROM only runs under Windows 9X, Windows 2000, and Windows NT 4.0. WM 2D Textbook requires that the CD-ROM be in your CD-ROM drive to use the soft ware. - Recommended screen resolution of 800 x 600 or better; - Recommended color palette setting of 65536 colors or more; - The save, print, and export functions are disabled; all other Working Model f unctions are available. System Requirements: Windows: Pentium-compatible processor PC Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 24 MB of RAM 10 MB of disk space CD-ROM drive To install the Working Model 2D Textbook Edition 5.0 software: --Insert the VISUAL_MECH CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. --Open the Install Folder. --Double click on the "Setup.exe" file in the Install Folder. --Follow the on screen instructions for installation. Once the software has been installed: --Click on the Start button in the Taskbar, then select Programs. --Select the Visual mechanics folder and select the "vismech.exe" file. NOTE: TO RUN THE VISMECH.EXE PROGRAM, THE VISUAL_MECH CD-ROM MUST BE IN THE CDROM DRIVE. ***IMPORTANT NOTE:*** THE FIRST TIME YOU USE THE CONTENT OF THIS CD, YOU MUST FIRST LAUNCH WORKING MOD EL 2D STUDENT EDITION FROM THE START MENU AND THEN ACCESS THE SIMULATIONS THROUG H THE VISMECH DYNAMICS PROGRAM IN YOUR START MENU. THEREAFTER, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCH THE SIMULTATIONS DIRECTLY FROM THE VISMECH DYNAMICS PROGR AM IN YOUR START MENU WITHOUT FIRST LAUNCHING WORKING MODEL 2D STUDENT EDITION. ********************* Running the simulations: Once you have selected an exercise, the Working Model program will be launched w hich will allow you to run the simulations. The example that appears is pre-set to reflect the conditions stated in the book. Press RUN on the toolbar to see t he simulation work. Press STOP to halt the simulation. Please note, in some ca ses,the simulation will run until STOP is pushed. You can reset the simulation by pressing RESET. To return to the Vismech interface, close the exercise and minimize the Working Model program. What is Visual Mechanics: We all know that students like to use the computer. While most professors beca me interested in engineering because of experiences they had tinkering with lawn

-mowers or radios, many students today became interested in engineering because they like to use computers. In fact, a lot of introductory engineering students feel much more comfortable with a keyboard in their hands, than they do with a pair of pliers. Visual Mechanics helps bridge this gap. Visual Mechanics is a software program that helps students understand how things physically work in the real world. No t just a collection of one -dimensional animations, Visual Mechanics simulates t ext examples using the most recent version of Knowledge Revolution's Working Mod el software and the actual art from the textbook. Students who use Visual Mecha nics will see the examples in their textbook jump off the page and on to their c omputer, and be able to fully interact with each example. By tinkering with the simulation, students not only gain a deeper understanding of the principles of Mechanics, they start to think more like engineers who modify, improve, create, and tinker everyday. Changing the Simulations: Before you perform any change, hit the RESET button on the toolbar. All simulations come with a set of sliders that let you change certain variable s in the example. You change the variable by either moving the slider, or typin g a new, numerical value in the box below it. By entering Edit mode, you can change the properties of any object or constrain t in the simulation. For example, double clicking on the collar in Example 13-4 lets you change the collar's weight, what type of material it's made of, and ot her choices. In addition, other than SAVE, PRINT and EXPORT, you have access to all the func tions of Working Model. To explore these further, use the help menu provided in Working Model 2D. Answering Questions: Questions are designed to be answered with only the use of the pre-set simulation, and by making changes with the sliders. Students can get the answe rs to the questions by simply clicking the button labeled "Show Answers." To analyze the simulation at specific points in time, run the simulation and ob serve the tape control with the frame count box at the bottom of the screen. When you stop the simulation, simply drag the frame count box backwards, or use the controls (similar to those on an audio CD player) near this box to move it to any specific point in the simulation.
