CORRELATION TECHNOLOGY

APPLICATION CONFIGURATION ESTIMATOR WORKSHEET

Instructions: This form will allow you to enter information about your proposed Correlation Technology based application so that an optimal hardware configuration for your software can be determined. Specifically, you will enter information about the set of documents that will form the corpus for your application. If your application handles more than one corpus, you will need to enter information about all the corpora, including a description of the average corpus. You will also need to enter information about the data volatility of your corpus (or average corpus). Data volatility means how much the corpus changes over a fixed time interval. If your application will use more than one corpus, then you will need to also describe the arrival rate of the corpora. You will need to enter data concerning the level of service that your application must support. This means you will need to consider how many concurrent users at peak demand times your application must support, how many concurrent correlations must be supported for each user, and how long in seconds will be the maximum response time allowed for Correlation results to be returned to the user. Finally, security and business requirement questions will complete the necessary information.

SECTION A
1. Does your application handle more than one corpus? Yes [ ] No [ ] If Yes, please answer the following questions about the average corpus, then please answer the questions in SECTION B. How many documents are in your corpus? What is the average number of words in each document of your corpus? ___________________ ___________________

2. 3.

Example chart to capture the number of words in each document of your application Corpus. Use the table on the next page to enter your actual data. Example: Assume MIN WORDS = 1,000; MAX WORDS = 10,000; MEDIAN WORDS = 6500; 20% of documents have MIN WORDS; 20% of documents have MAX WORDS; Remaining documents word counts cluster around MEDIAN WORDS. Note: If the distribution of word counts is not known, calculate rough word count by estimating number of text bytes in each document and by dividing that amount by five (5). An average Wikipedia article without graphic illustrations may have 2500 bytes, or about 500 words. word counts

Chart the data volatility of documents in your application Corpus (or average corpus). Note: Data Volatility means how frequently the contents of a document are changed, and also, how frequently documents are added or deleted. For example, a closed corpus of American Civil War correspondence will have X across all ten columns in the Never Changes row, because the Civil War correspondence items will not ever be updated.

6. Indicate how soon after your corpus is first loaded into your Correlation Technology-based application must the corpus first be ready to begin Correlations: In Hours HOURS (Min = 1, Max = 24. Indicates system answers must reflect new corpus within specified number of hours.) Place X in bracket. (Indicates system answers must reflect new corpus by start of next business day.) DAYS (Min = 1, Max = 7. Indicates system answers must reflect new corpus within specified number of business days.)

13. Describe any security requirements for your Correlation Technology based application that may impact the hardware implementation or application performance characteristics. In particular, please indicate if documents in your corpus (or average corpus) must remain behind a customer firewall. Also, indicate if the Infobase of Knowledge Fragments extracted from the documents in your corpus must remain behind a customer firewall. Finally, indicate if the answers from Correlation functions (these are the successful correlations which are analyzed by your application) must remain behind a customer firewall.

NOTE: SECTION B starts on next page. If you answered Yes to Question 1, then please proceed to SECTION B.

APPLICATION CONFIGURATION ESTIMATOR WORKSHEET SECTION B

Instructions: Section B of this form should only be filled out if you answered Yes to Question 1 on Page 1 of this form. A Yes answer to Question 1 means that more than one corpus is used or handled by your Correlation Technology based application. You will need to chart the sizes of the corpora, the minimum and maximum number of active corpora, and the arrival rate of the corpora.

14. Chart the number of documents of your application corpora (see instructions for completing this type of chart on Page 1). For example, if the minimum corpus size is 10,000 documents, enter 10,000 as MIN. If the maximum corpus size is 1,000,000 enter 1,000,000 as MAX. Indicate a MEDIAN CORPUS SIZE as MED.
